Spartan Assault Review
Cinema Blend reviewed Halo: Spartan Assault. In a marked departure from most of their Halo coverage, they actually liked this game. Go give it a read! (Louis Wu 19:10:10 UTC)

Reach Beta Impressions, from CinemaBlend
CinemaBlend has posted some Reach Beta Impressions - they're noteworthy simply because they're positive, from a site that rarely, if ever, has anything nice to say about the Halo franchise. (The article was written by a new games writer, so that might have something to do with it...) Give it a read! (Louis Wu 13:32:58 UTC)

AND DON'T USE EWOKS!
Cinema Blend's William Usher has had it out for the Halo franchise for years; check our news archive for examples of his Halo-bashing going back to early 2006. Nice to know that some things never change... his newest Halo-related article is called 'Top 5 Ways Halo: Reach Could Go Wrong', and it's a pretty funny read. "Bungie, don't do what you did before - but make sure that you DO do SOME of what you did before, only better!" Read it for a laugh. (Louis Wu 20:41:01 UTC)

Halo Wars WP
CinemaBlend got their hands on some new Halo Wars wallpaper - and then spend all their text space dissing the Halo games themselves. The desktops are great, though, so grab 'em and ignore the nastiness. (Louis Wu 12:47:49 UTC)

Revisiting Halo's Crimes
Last week, Cinema Blend put up an editorial discussing how Halo 3 was killing console multiplayer. There was some discussion on our forum, and a sizeable rebuttal from Narcogen, at Rampancy.net - but I managed to miss a counter-editorial at Cinema Blend itself. (After reading it, I'm not sure that was such a bad thing; the argument boils down to, basically, "multiplayer in most games sucks, and gamers are lazy" - neither of which are really decent arguments.) However, it's there, and I'm sorry I missed it. (Louis Wu 16:29:32 UTC)

Halo: 800 Pound Gorilla, or Misunderstood Giant?
Cinema Blend (a website that has not shown a lot of love for Halo in the past) has a new editorial up - this time, they're claiming that Halo 2 and Halo 3 multiplayer are stifling your online gaming options. The argument is that since everyone online is playing Halo 2 or Halo 3, there aren't any gamers providing pools of competitors for OTHER games. Does this seem like a reasonable argument to you? Or is it possible that folks are playing Halo online because they ENJOY it more than their other options? Feel free to discuss this in our forum, or leave a comment on the CB page. Apples and Bananas
Cinema Blend has a 'screenshot comparison' between Resistance 2 and Halo 3; I'm not sure how you can do this in a reasonable manner, but hey, they tried. (Louis Wu 20:51:36 UTC)

It's all about the hype.
Cinema Blend believes that GTA4 deserves the hype it received - while Halo 3 did not. Go read the rationale. (Louis Wu 14:48:45 UTC)

I Am Legendereh
Cinema Blend is giving away a copy of the Halo 3 Legendary Edition - swing by to read the rigorous rules! (Bottom line: if you live in the US, can read, and have an IQ above about 50, you've got a shot.) (Louis Wu 10:00:51 UTC)

Last news round-up of the day
From here on, I'm caught up - news will be posted as it comes! w00t!

  • Heh - the New Zealand Herald has a story about how dangerous videogames can be, and warns parents to keep an eye on their children in the wake of Halo 3's release.

  • Cinema Blend says Halo is the perfect dance of bullets and dead bodies, and gives it a 5/5 rating.

  • Whoa - these are really cute.

  • I know I said we were going to call the launch events 'covered' and move on - but the London Gala was pretty extravagant, and Feenix took some great pics and delivered some nice commentary.

  • Kotaku's pretty amazed that there's at least one store in Japan that has sold out of Halo 3 (thanks, Red_Breast), even though the advertising campaign there is... a little weak.

  • bs angel found this great song on YouTube - MollieJane misses her boyfriend.

CAUGHT UP! I'M CAUGHT UP! (For a minute or two, at least...) (Louis Wu 16:55:13 UTC)

It's just shooting and running and throwing grenades.
Cinema Blend has put up an article about how Halo 3 ain't all that... and it's our fault.

Gamers are overly excited about a game that doesn't give us anything new, so it won't get more exciting than it already is. This is gaming standing still, and we are happy with it.

It's an opinion, that's certainly true... (Louis Wu 13:03:39 UTC)

Bungie can't win.
A couple of weeks ago, a quote from the then-upcoming EGM article began circulating, and online co-op in Halo 3 was suddenly in doubt. (Before this article had come out, there had been zero information about the mode - and nobody had been talking about it.) The internet seemed to catch fire with the flames Bungie began receiving from all sides - people stated that they'd boycott the game if online co-op weren't present, journalists lambasted Bungie for laziness and lack of consideration for their fans. Bungie asked people to be patient; they didn't want to announce something they couldn't GUARANTEE would be in the final shipping product, so they were keeping their mouths shut. (Online co-op was cut very, very, VERY late in the development cycle of Halo 2, and many people were strongly disappointed.) Finally, this week, they announced that yes, online co-op would be in Halo 3 - and in fact it would be four-player co-op, not just the two-player that was in the original game. And how does the community respond? Well, Cinema Blend says it's a disappointment. It's a tack-on, they say, and there's not even a four-player offline mode. Um... what? (There IS an offline 4-player mode - System Link is supported, no internet needed.) I guess I should be satisfied that they're not complaining that you can't play as Cortana... Cinema Blend is unimpressed
There's a Halo 2 Vista preview at Cinema Blend (2.5/5, they didn't think there was enough there to warrant buying at full price). (Louis Wu 15:38:54 UTC)

Git 'er done.
Heh - there's an editorial at Cinema Blend today about how Halo (the movie) could make a billion dollars. Okay, that's probably a stretch. The gist, however, is solid - there are a LOT of gamers, they WANT to see a good movie, whoever nails it first is gonna make a mint. And Halo has everything going for it. Here's hoping the funding comes through! (Louis Wu 16:32:36 UTC)

Universal, Fox Pull out of Halo Movie Deal
Wow. Big news this morning involves the Halo movie - looks like Universal and Fox have both pulled out of the deal, citing fears of ballooning costs, and an unwillingness on Microsoft's part to budge on the existing deal. According to Variety, where I read this story (thanks, runnersdialzero), this doesn't spell the end of the project; work continues at Weta Digital while new distribution partners are courted. There are similar stories at Cinema Blend, CanMag, Joystiq, and Voodoo Extreme (thanks, Rampancy.net) with differing takes on the situation. The Halo Movie blog has put together a bunch of links including video footage of Jackson discussing this on NZ television, as well. As more details become public, we'll let you know! Live at the Hollywood Boll
I lied. There are some tasty morsels at Rampancy.net - you should read them before I'm through tonight. Uwe Boll (filmmaker extraordinaire, you betcha) has predicted that the Halo movie will be a failure (and you should read this, too, for a laugh)... and Narcogen has taken it upon himself to try and explain why Boll continues to make movies. (If you really want to be cynical, there's always Stuart Woods' theory...) What does all of this add up to? For me - it's that SOMEONE was smart enough to keep that man FAR away from the Halo script. UPDATE: Son Goharotto points out an article at 1UP where Boll calls it quits for videogame movies. (Louis Wu 05:27:11 UTC)
