Insanity in the Ranks

Private First Class, Jake Hollery rushed through the grass, feeling the blades stroke his ankles. He thought he knew how he could end it all, be happy again. He held an M6D pistol tightly in his hand and a thick sweat dripped slowly through his fingers and over the gun's hilt. He sped towards his superior's tent, and feeling the insanity grope at his mind, he slipped through the loose doors and made his way to his officer's bed.

He stared at the Corporal, who lay fully clothed and on top of the covers of the bottom bunk, a good long while before straightening his arm so that the gun's nose pointed squarely at his foes chest. As he prepared to pull the trigger and free himself from the prison life he must have inhabited, he saw the eyes of his enemy open with a flicker and gaze back at him.

They moved down Hollery's arm and laid to rest on the gun. Confidently the officer unbuttoned his shirt and moved apart each side so that his aging but muscular chest glowered back at Hollery. "I bear you my chest, comrade, so that you may take me."

He doesn't think I'll do it!

Hollery moved the gun with a violent gesture, so that it pointed at his Corporal's head,

Now, he better think I'll do it.

As he moved the gun, he found himself gazing into the officer's eyes. Deep, like the pools of water he used to play in when he was a kid. He heard the rain outside,

No puddles today. No days were there any puddles. Just mud.

Still the eyes smiled back, beseeching,

What the hell am I doing? I can't.

He lowered the gun slightly,

What have I become?

He lowered the gun even more, fighting against the tendrils of lunacy,

Go away. Go away.

Has that maddening seed withered now? Finally? Am I happy?

He lowered the gun further still, and as it passed over his superior's stomach Hollery felt every part of his body ache. His muscles, his head. His heart.

DO IT! cried a voice in his mind. A different voice to the prior. One that was evil. Poison. A pestilence. He felt his grip tighten, the tears rolling icy cold down his face, then he heard his own terrified shriek and, to his horror, the familiar crack of a gun.

All braces of the madness gone, for now anyway, he could only look at the body of his respected officer stare back at him, eyes icy and glazed, and swallow against a burning vomit rising up from a pit in his stomach.

RUN! His legs turned, instinctively and he rushed from the tent. He dropped his gun. And stormed into the forest. Cold. Cold and alone. Alone and insane. Insane and dirty.

Corporal Sam Thawsir felt a crack echo through the air and stun his mind. The officer's tent! His constantly perked senses had been what had elevated him to the rank he sat in now, and instantly he knew where it had come from. He shot out of bed like a bullet from the gun that lay next to his bed. He grabbed it and awoke the other members in his tent. Together they rushed, guns in arms towards the tent. Twigs snapping underfoot, they entered it.

Thawsir stopped in the entrance and saw his dead father lying on the bed. He took two steps towards it. Towards him. Then two more. Then he knelt next to him and stroked the loving face. Who? The bullet wound bled little, surprisingly, but no matter how much it bled it couldn't fix the yawning wound in the Corporal's heart. A soldier put his hand onto the Thawsir's shoulder, but was brushed off as the Corporal stood suddenly. As the innocent sleep, they shall be avenged.

Thawsir turned and left the tent, and led his men into the forest. Anger rushed with his blood, mixing with adrenaline and escaping as tears, as he scanned the trees for any possible attackers.

What have I done! Get out! "GET OUT!" He shouted, despite his current situation. If they found him they would kill him and if they killed him, he would sleep.

But I don't want to die!

Yes! Yes you do!

Get out and leave me alone!

He tore at his hair and his face as if trying to tear the thoughts from his brain. He tripped several times as he sprinted over the logs and leaf litter and his hands were soon grimy with dirt. But they had felt grimy since the gun had fired and he could still feel the breath of the man fire up onto his own, as if his soul was escaping from its broken carcass.

Thawsir halted to his men to stop, a blur in front of him sped away through the bushes. He knelt down and raised his weapon.

They were behind him, he could hear them.

Thawsir gripped the BR55 Rifle tightly, and glared through the scope. He could feel his heart thumping, sweat flowing through his fingers and his head throbbing. His eyes sharpened and the blur was obviously the attacker. Thawsir was surprised to see the single chevron sewed onto the man's shoulder, and was hesitant. But only for a second... He pulled back the trigger.
Once...
Twice...
Thrice...

Hollery felt the bullets tear through his chest and abdomen, spaying his hands with blood. His organs were badly ruptured and he collapsed to the floor. He felt the warm, crimson fluid stream away from his body and let out a shout in an inhalation. The ground in front of him seemed tainted, like a red carpet lying before him, and he took longer than it might have usually, to realise that it was his own life, creating a red, soiled pool around him.

Then darkness closed around him, blurring the edges of his vision. His mind felt clearer now. Slacker. Freer. Then he smiled in the gloom that was all that he could see.

Now that I die. That voice is dead with me. Never will it haunt me, taunt me... Never again.

An Author's Note? I almost forgot!

Dedicated to:
Master Chief's Cousin: For showing me the light so long ago,
Master Grunt: For making me a haven in the form of his forum,
And especially, BlasTech: For pulling me out of writer's block rut and guiding me back on the road.

And thanks, of course to everyone at HBO FF. (Minus, with a few exceptions, anyone who joined after the 22nd of December. Because I have no idea who you are. Sorry.)

And one last shout of goodwill to The Arbitress. I don't know where you are or what's happening, but I hope you come back soon. Look after her Ark. (If anything is actually wrong. She might just be tired. Ark won't tell us :) )

Heh,I hope you all understood this story. If you didn't, just interpret it in your own why.

I have no idea about how this story is. I would describe it as "Meh." I'm working on something big. Real big. I hope. I'll probably end up calling it something like: "Anticlimax II- Son of Climax.

And if you don't like Author's notes (I know some of you don't,) then it's not my fault. I like to ramble after spending time writing this story and if you don't like the ramblings then you should have skipped it. :)

Godspeed.
