I'm a newb with forerunner names, so I had to improvise. Forgive me.

Location: unknown
April 22, 2662
Secondary Location: Darkness

John opened his eyes, a green light flashed continuously. Alarms blared the sound was getting annoying. He slowly stood up waiting for his vision to return. Time was acting against his eyes. The motion was slow until suddenly it came to equilibrium with him.

The leading figure in a gold cloak turned to find a Guardian staring at him.

"We welcome you John, the battle remains a stalemate. The flood continued their bombardment. Our shields are depleting themselves. Time is not on our side, please we need your help. Save us Guardian, bring peace and order to this Time. We have seen your capabilities; you have saved us three thousand years ago. You must do it again; your journey is a great one. The stake is not only of our Empire but of Earth."

"Wait! How do you know my name? Who are you? What is going on?" spoke the Spartan, the green light making him a silhouette in the darkness between the flashes. The gold visor made him a god.

"I am Alexis, it is not my true name. However you do not posses the skill to call me by my true name. Alexis shall serve the purpose. The questions you ask, will be answered on the trade of your service. Do you agree or disagree?"

John raised his hands and found that his battle Rifle was with him, he was dumbfounded temporarily. Within a split-second he put aside his thoughts and thumbed the safety of his weapon off.

"No! You tell me first what i want to know, and then we will see how much you need my help. My crosshairs are on your head, move an inch and I'll send your brains across the room. Now tell me."

"Very well, I or in such a case we are the forerunners, the creators. The Milky Way Galaxy is an artificial galaxy it was a grand experiment. Which in the end succeeded at a high cost. The flood were the first to seed this galaxy, within them harbors the DNA of every living being that exists within this galaxy.

John lowered his battle rifle slightly, until a forerunner to the right of the commander moved and drew a beam weapon. He moved his crosshairs onto the forerunner's head and pulled the trigger twice. The muzzle flashed yellow as six bullets exited the barrel. Six casings ejected and clinked onto the floor. The first three bullets impacted the forerunner between the eyes. The rounds bounced of a shield; the force knocked the weapon out the being's hand. The second trio of bullets impacted on the shield once again. It flared a nightmarish green, and it spread across the forerunner's body. The final impact knocked the forerunner of its feet.

Within the moment of that event, all the other surrounding forerunners drew their beam weapons and pointed them at John.

"Drop your weapon!" said a forerunner in a silver cloak.

"Hold your fire now! My talk with John has not completed, anyone who fires will be sent to the brig."

"But sir..."

"James you will cease fire!"

The surrounding forerunners lowered their weapons and eased themselves. James also lowered his weapon slowly and grudgingly. He'll be the end of us. He moved back towards the weapons display. Another forerunner sitting in the front spoke.

"Sir the flood ships are a few hundred kilometers of to port, waiting to fire."

Alexis waiting patiently for a few seconds before he spoke to John and James. His voice was tense, sweat dripped down his brow. Out in the distance bloated dead green ships floated on their way to the forerunner fleet.

"Fire."

The hull reverberated as on screen three torpedoes raced away from the ship John was on. In return, the flood fired as well. Seven torpedoes raced away from their ships, upon impact of the flood weaponry the shields pulsated bright silver before fading to a dull blue. Another volley impacted upon the shields same process repeated itself. The forerunner now known by Mark yelled across the noise.

"Shields at seventy-three percent and dropping, the flood have managed to fire the torpedoes faster than we can. We won't be able to hold out much longer under this much stress."

The ship shook tremendously; console's exploded sparks showered the bridge crew and the Spartan. John's shields flared as metal fragments impacted on it.

"Where the hell are our torpedoes?" screamed Alexis, his voice rasp. Blood trickled from his mouth.

John watched quietly as the battle unfolded before him, Forerunner and Flood ships exchanged fire. Reactors detonated and ships burned, melted and useless floating dead in space. Beam batteries fired repeatedly, hundreds streaks of blue and yellow blazed across infected ships. Cutting into the flesh of the flood, melting through the death reaching for the core. A single shot would do the rest, but getting to reactor was a problem. More torpedoes arced away from the ship, some impacting dead ships others impacting active ones. Golden light bathed the bridge as the shields finally failed left the ship vulnerable to flood infestations. He quickly reloaded his battle-rifle, sensing trouble. He took two steps back and mere meters from him a teleportation grid activated.

Two carrier forms, three combat forms and a group of infection forms appeared. James seeing this pulled out his beam weapon and opened fire on them, the infection forms popped as raw energy destroyed their molecular structure. The combat forms however were more resilient to beam weapons than the infection forms. They rushed two of the bridge crew and brought them down within seconds. John switched of his scope on his rifle and aimed at the chest of the combat form. He pulled the trigger, bullets blazed the air and three rounds punctured and killed the first combat form. He then jumped forward and brought down the butt of his rifle on a combat form. His strength and force knocked it backwards. With little time to spare he kicked the combat form in the chest, his titanium boots crushed its chest and the life faded from his threat.

One more and the two carriers, where is Cortana? His movements were systematic, but unpredictable. James fired his beam weapon once more, this time far more accurate then his first. The beam met its target straight and true, the flesh melted against the extreme heat. The infection form within the combat form melted and the final combat form fell. One of the carrier forms exploded sending infection forms all across the bridge. An explosion rocked the ship, the alarm colors changed from green to red. Another forerunner from a distant console spoke.

"Hull breach on decks seventeen through twenty-three. Bleeding oxygen at a rate of sixteen percent per minute. Sealing breached decks, primary shield generators have been hit. Secondary generators activated."

Once again a golden light bathed the bridge, the forerunner spoke again.

"Secondary level shields activated, holding at forty-three percent."

Just as he finished, the final carrier form detonated itself in a mass of flesh, green mucus and more infection forms. The shields of the nearest forerunner failed and the infection forms swarmed him. Red blood splattered against the consoles and seats. John was surprised to see red blood. All the surviving bridge crew drew their weapons and opened fire. The infected Forerunner was vaporized by the combined power of multiple beam weapons. The flood died with him too.

Another torpedo impacted the slowly recharging shields, and the percents dropped unbelievably to the eye. Forty-three percent continued to drop until it reached five percent. The shields held barely, another hit and they would be annihilated. Finally seeing all the carnage John made up his mind.

"I'll help you" he said in a firm calm voice.

Alexis looked up, his eyes filled with joy. A sense of hope washed over him maybe we do have a fighting chance in this war. But that soon was destroyed as Mark yelled once more from another console.

"Incoming torpedoes, class III. Shields cannot take that, waiting for instructions. Thirty seconds to impact. Twenty seconds to impact, sir?"

Alexis looked at the screen his mind filled with confusion. What did I do wrong?.

"Ten seconds to impact, Sir!" said Mark, a sense of grief in his voice.

However before the torpedoes could impact, a ship moved in front of them. Alexis recognized the configuration, No! The torpedoes impacted, the new ship's shields flared and flooded the bridge with white light. John's visor tinted to maximum output, yet the light was still too bright. He brought his hand to block the light, the shields gave under the energy released by the torpedoes. It continued onwards and buckled the hull. The ship broke apart on the immense stress. The reactor unable to take the pressure, overloaded. The light intensified then came the shockwave. John lost his balance and crashed into a chair, his battle rifle escaped his grip and flew across the room before making a dent in the alien hull. His shields flared and dropped by seventy-five percent. The ship trembled, like a child fearing the darkness. Secondary shields finally failed and hull buckled once more. Finally the light receded only glowing sections of a ship remained on the view screen.

Alexis fell to his knees, tears streaming down his bloody face. He spoke sobbingly, the silence was enough for the bridge crew to hear the grief and ordeal the commander now faced.

"No, not the Harmony of Light. Why did this have to happen, what did I do wrong. Tell me gods, where did I fail her. Tell Me!"

He muttered something, which John was unable to understand. The bridge crew bowed and honored their fallen. Seeing all of this occurring around him, John too bowed and swore he would avenge for the one who had fallen here today. The commander soon regained his composure and spoke.

"This battle is lost, but the war is not. Form up bring everything we have to bear in front of us. Hail the fleet to prepare to jump back to Celestia. We're going to plow a path for them and we are going to live through to see tomorrow. Activate the Quantum Gateway, lets leave this scene and live to fight another day."

The Bridge crew cheered as they slowly got up and began to move back to their consoles. The moral had returned, John moved to the wall and picked up his battle rifle. A small dent appeared in the butt of the rifle. Good and reliable to the end, glad to know that you survived old friend. He then moved to James who was on the floor slowly regaining his consciousness. John stuck out his hand to James and he in turn grabbed it. His eyed brought forth an apology, and John accepted it. He pulled James back up and handed him his weapon. He looked him directly in the eye momentarily, I sense a friendship to form.

Outside in space, the Guardian of Celestia plowed through the remainder of the infected/flood fleet. Beam batteries firing left and right, cutting through rotten matter. Torpedoes destroyed remainder of the smaller ships and cruisers. Behind the lead flagship, followed several remainder of forerunner ships. The flood fleet was in disarray, some firing on each other while the rest following in pursuit.

They forerunner fleet finally congregated at the Quantum Gateway jump coordinates. In one final salvo, the combined ships emptied their torpedo batteries into the pursuing infected/flood ships. Hundreds of powerful torpedoes raced towards the enemy at detonated with great prejudice. The Guardian of Celestia opened the gateway and hailed the fleet to proceed through. Finally as the last ship entered, the flagship made way towards the entrance of the gate. Too little to be noticed an infected corvette attached itself to the flagship's hull. An invasion spawning in their unified minds. The flagship finally entered the gateway and disappeared in a flash of nightmare green and blue.

In the Abyss of the Celestial temple, Cortana continued to make contact with John. Suddenly his sensors picked up something, unknown and powerful. For the first time ever known to her she spoke to John, fear in her voice.

"Where are you John? I'm afraid..."

A pain stabbed his mind as he heard something whisper in the back of his head.

"I'm afraid..."

He knew one and only one thing that would be able to do such a thing.

Cortana...
