WARNING: THIS STORY IS BEFORE HALO WHEN THE SPARTANS WERE STILL IN TRAINING. THIS IS A DRILL THAT IS A CAPTURE THE FLAG GAME THAT THEY HAD.

"Okay guys, where do we stand?" asked Spartan-117, John.
"The flag is surrounded by four watch towers and a couple of bunkers on each corner. There is a latrine on one side and showers on the other. There are ten people to a bunker but with some planning, none will know about this happening." reported Linda, who with her sniper rifle, was watching the base of Beta Squadron.
"It's to bad though." piped up Will "Gamma was getting so fun!"
"Yeah and they almost won last time too." retorted Kelly.
"Hey, a gun jams sometimes okay. Now give it a rest.
"Just make sure it doesn't happen again and I will!"
"Hey!" said John, "Let's keep our cool here! We're on one of Chief's missions here so let's keep our cool and think this through."
The other two nodded and kept silent even though they shot glaring looks at each other.
"Alright, so" resumed John "the base is here right?" he asked drawing in the dirt as he usually did. "The guard towers are on the four corners, here, here, here, and here. The flag is here, and the bunkers are here. The showers and the latrine is here and here. So what we need to do is to sneak up in the shadows and get the flag. Unfortunately there is nothing to block the sun between the nearest building and the flag so were gonna have to go at night. Kelly, since your our fastest person, your gonna get the flag ok?" She nodded "The rest of us are going to provide cover for her and take out anyone who threatens." He hefted his adapted pistol that takes tranq darts. He had Linda modify it for him so that the darts would go farther than the original twenty-yard effective range. It now had a hundred yard range with pretty good accuracy, he felt safe with it.
"I wonder how the dogs of Gamma are doing?" pondered Fahjad. "That was some nasty stuff that we gave 'em."
"Must of been disgusting what ever came out of it."
"Lets focus here people, Linda cover us when we give you the signal." said John. He then whistled the six-note melody of Oly, Oly, Oxen free that they had all learned from Deja. "Let's move out."
The four of the now teen-age Spartans moved out. Kelly taking point and Will with Fahjad bringing up the rear, all of them holding their modified MA5B AR's made to hold tranq darts instead of real bullets at the ready.

It was nearly midnight when they reached the base. John whistled the six-tone melody and received the reply from Linda.
"Oly, Oly, Oxen Free. All out in the free. We're all free."
"Let's move in." said John. "Will, take the left flank, Fahjad take the rear, and I'll take the right. Let's move."
Kelly went ahead of them, keeping with the shadows. The flag area was flooded with light from the light on top of the towers from the corners. "Linda, take out the guards."
"Roger." she said. John soon heard one thump as the nearest guard hit the ground. He then heard another as the second was tranqued, and then two more in rapid succession. "Targets clear." she said.
"Roger that, move in Kelly." She nodded and moved silently into the shadows. The rest of them followed silently. John moved forward while listening for any sound. He gave Kelly the go ahead signal. She darted out into the flood light, grabbed the flag, and with out missing a step, vanished into the shadows on the opposite side. Then all heck broke loose.
Linda's voice broke through the silence "Targets, lots of them, approaching from your six and three, be advised."
"Roger." replied John. The three Spartans whipped around and opened fire. The silent 'put put' of the modified MA5B's came out. John heard a couple of guards hit the ground. He saw some actually dodge the darts and take cover. "Let's move to some cover guys." They got behind the nearest bunker not a moment to soon. Right after John's foot disappeared behind the edge did he hear the thunder from the live fire MA5B's that Beta was carrying. He heard bullets fly by and saw some hit the ground next to him. "Kelly, get out of here. Get the flag to safety." He didn't see her but knew she was moving. "Let's bug out guys, before we get serious." He turned the corner then spun right back around as a bullet came whizzing by right where his head just was. John rolled his eyes and with out looking turned the barrel of his rifle around the corner and pulled the trigger. He heard a couple of bodies hit the ground and even more feet running towards them. He turned to Fahjad and Will. "Get to the other side, I'll keep 'em busy, go! Go! Go!" He turned the corner and noticed something very wrong. There was nothing there. No bodies, nothing. He heard foot steps behind him and saw Will and Fahjad running. He turned back around and raised his rifle and fired a few shots into the dark. Nothing. Very weird. Very weird indeed. He high tailed it back to where the other Spartans met. No one was there. He whistled the tune and heard rustling behind him. He spun around and brought up his rifle. Will emerged from his hiding spot and nodded. John nodded back.
      "Where's Kelly?" asked John.
Something hit his shoulder. He turned and saw Kelly there with the flag. she didn't have a good look on her face. This puzzled John.
"Look at the flag." she said and handed it to him.
Written all over the flag was "You messed up Spartans!", and "They don't train you to be smart, so they?" He turned it over and saw "faux flag" written all over it. "Ugh." was all that John said. He turned and looked back at the base. There were no lights on and no noise from patrols. They had been tricked.
"Well, since they tricked us, we trick them." said John with a wicked smile.

John looked over to Fahjad and gave him the thumbs up signal, all was going to plan. It was still night but it had to be for what they were going to do. John removed his shoes and eased the door to the bunker open. He took a peek inside and saw that all were in bed. Excellent. This was the last bunker that they had to search before day light and that was still a good two hours away. Either way, John shouldered his MA5B and crept inside, his footsteps muffled by his socks. In the full moon coming in through the window, nothing was dark. He silently crept up to the first bunk and put a dart into the neck of the man sleeping there. If he wasn't sleeping before, he would be now. He climbed up onto the bed and checked the top bunk. The man here either slept with his eyes open while smiling, or was awake and glad that he had just caught some prey. Before he could make a move though, John shot him in the leg. The mans eyes rolled into his head and he fell into unconsciousness. John heard similar 'puts' from Fahjad's, Will's, and Kelly's rifles noting that no alarm has yet been raised.
He heard foot steps out side the door, he hit the ground signaled the others and rolled under a bed. He looked out from under the bed and saw feet walking by. Rolled out from under the bed and put three darts into the mans back. The man hit the floor with a loud clang. Suddenly there was movement from all around. He ducked back under the bed just in time to beat the lights turning on. He saw numerous feet hit the floor and held still. There were numerous colorful remarks and most of the feet went out side. He saw knees hitting the floor then hands. He readied his rifle and fired a trio of rounds into the wrist. The man hit the floor and didn't move. Fahjad, Will and Kelly did the same. Soon nothing was moving inside while out side was a completely different story.
John signaled his team to move out and find the flag. They moved all the way to the other end of the bunker and with some searching found it under a mattress. He gave them the 'bug out' sign and ran. He stopped at the door to pick up his shoes. He shoved his feet in, still marveling about how he hasn't been seen yet. After he got them on he sprinted to the edge of the light and looked back. The camp was in chaos, and people were coming back towards the bunker. Kelly sped past him melding instantly into the shadows. Will and Fahjad followed. He left, melding into the shadows joining up with the rest of his team. When they were safe Kelly said that he came up with the most ingenious and most crazy plans of all. She just wondered how they pulled it off.
"Easy," he said "I always win."
