23:41 Hours, November 9, 2549
Epsilon Reticuli System
Benjamin V Theater Of Operations

Corporal Parker hugged his assault rifle close to his chest and peeked over the rim of his fresh 'foxhole'. The charred remains at the bottom of it even smelled fresh. His com activated.

"They're lining up again. Ready for us. It's a shame we're out of grenades."

"I can't see them anyway." He muttered.

"No time to lose. We've got to move up. Get ready."

"Sarge, I'm losing sight of them. The smoke is shifting." The Sergeant's replay was swift.

"Fire your guns! Its time to run! Blow 'em away!"

I'll stay forever in this mess. None of us are leaving here alive. Parker thought as he charged from his foxhole.

"After these guys fall we'll take out the rest of them!" Sarge bellowed.

Show me the way. Parker thought. The marines charged across a debris littered courtyard and liberally sprayed death at the aliens. Parker saw Sarge take cover under a piece of concrete to reload his weapon. He did the same. For a second they locked eyes.

"Keep it up marines! Only the strongest will survive!"

Well then lead me to heaven when I die. Parker retorted inside his head.

"We are the shadows on the wall! We are gods! We will save this planet!"

He and Sarge both sprung from their pieces of cover and charged. But by some chance, some twist of fate, a bolt of plasma crossed the courtyard and connected with Sarge's face. Parker's eyes bulged and his face twisted. It took him two full seconds to get his bearings when his knees gave way and he toppled to the ground. He ran as fast as his legs would carry him away from the carnage. Pinpricks of heat dotted the back of his neck; a plasma grenade had gone off.

Several minutes later he found himself approaching a dark crevice of blown out rock a few blocks away. He crawled on his hands and knees inside and slammed his head into the short ceiling. The crevice was occupied.

"There's nothing left. No one else. So save your breath. We're gonna wait." The hidden marine told him. We're caught in a goddamn tidal wave and this jackass thinks he can swim. Parker settled down beside him and looked out the other side of the hiding spot. A patrol of grunts lumbered down a street. A few of the stocky aliens climbed all over a car, smashing windows and playing with the glove compartment. Parker's elbow hit a rock; it tumbled out into the street. His companion turned on him in horror. "Our cover's blown. We've got nowhere to go! You god damn idiot!"

      Loaded I will walk alone.

Parker's face contorted. Something inside him, deep down, ripped itself in half. He punched the marine right in the jaw. "Fire your gun! Its time to run!" He grabbed the marine's face. "Blow them away!"

      "No! I'm staying here!"

"After they fall we'll shake the rest of them." Parker screamed. To himself he added Show me the way. "Only the strongest will survive." Sarge, lead me to heaven when I die. "I am the shadow on the wall." God, save us all.

A plasma grenade attached itself to the marine's helmet. Parker tore it off the marine's helmet and rolled out into the street. "Wanting it back!?!" he shrieked. "Oh God! Don't let me die!" the marine behind him screamed. Parker hurled the grenade at the Covenant. More of the bastards poured out of a mausoleum across the street. Parker raised his rifle and screamed.

"Here I coooooome! AP rounds tore through half a dozen aliens and splattered the ones behind them with gore. Shell casings clattered to the pavement and Parker advanced on the demons with pure malice. More of them streamed out from the door and Parker emptied the last of his clip into them. He tossed his rifle aside and stepped over a wounded Grunt. "Little shit." He muttered. After placing his boot on its throat he drew his sidearm. "I want you to die!" he screamed. With a twitch of the finger he scattered bits of the alien's brains and skull over the pavement. Behind him something stirred. He turned to face with the pistol slacked to his side. A black form, almost eight feet tall, stood in the doorway. It stretched out its neck so its face was in the light and split open its grotesque mouth. Parker's teeth rattled from the war cry it let out. He brought the pistol to bear. It moved.

In an instant it was on him. With one hand it swatted away his weapon and with the other it tossed him away. Parker landed almost fifteen feet away from the beast. He raised his head. A pair of deep sapphire rods flared from the alien's hand. Parker didn't recognize the instrument, but he knew what it would do. He drew his own combat knife and thought of Sarge. Only the strongest will survive. I'll lead you to heaven when I die. I am the shadow on the wall. I'll be the one to save us all. The alien shifted its weight. Parker rolled to the left and felt his skin boil. The alien was right on top of him, energy blade sunk into the pavement on his left. Save us all. He thrust his knife up at the aliens neck. It snarled. He twisted. The beast's eyes rolled into its head and it slumped to the ground. The energy blade disappeared in a puff heat. Parker heaved the carcass over and closed his eyes. When his breathing grew steadier he rose to his feet. Something in the sky caught his eye. Save us all… He let his knife lay. Orbital bombardment.
