0430 hours, September 15, 2552 (Military Calender)/
Aboard UNSC vessel Gettysburg,
In Slipspace en route to Sol system.

John had just awoken from a long deserved rest. Looking around, getting his bearings after the long period of sleep he reflected on the past two weeks, the fall of Reach, Halo, the Flood, the harrowing battle in Slipspace, the destruction of an entire Covenant armada. "Get enough rest?", asked Linda who was standing in the door way of his room. "Enough to make up for last two weeks," John replied. "Good, Cortana wants us on the bridge as soon as possible." Linda then turned and departed.
John got up and headed down the way that led to the bridge. As he entered the bridge he saw Sergeant Johnson, Fred, Linda, and Will, who all looked at him when he entered. "Good, you're here," said the crisp voice of Cortana. "We are getting close to reaching earth, ETA fifteen minutes." "Good," said John, who looked around at the war torn bridge. "I would like to a routine systems check before we exit Slipspace," Cortana, who's just image just appeared on the holo pad next to the captain's chair, said. "So, if you all would take a station please, well get started." They all took a station, Will at NAV, Linda at weapons 1, Fred at systems control, Sergeant Johnson at weapons 2, and John to over look every thing.

"Exiting Slipspace in ten seconds." Everyone's heads turned to the front view screen to see Earth smear on screen as though someone had just melted wax covering a picture. Earth. It was a rare site for military personnel serving in the field. It looked quite sullen, with most of the planet covered in cities with very little but the oceans to give it any color. John had only been here once, and that was for the revealing of the Spartans to humanity. Now that the first wave of awe had passed over, John finally took a closer look. They could see the African and European continents, of which it was day, and part of the Asian and the Australian continents, both of which where coming out of the darkness of night. Above those continents orbiting in the atmosphere, where defense stations that carried the powerful Super MAC cannons. John counted twelve. "Not enough to hold back the Covenant," John wispered silently to himself. "Now there's a sight I haven't seen since I joined the Corps.," Sergeant Johnson said in amazement.
Static sounded in the speakers until a clear voice came in. "This is orbital defense platform Cairo Admiral Hood speaking, identify yourselves," said Hood. "This is UNSC frigate Gettysburg, permission to board," Cortana said. "Impossible, the Gettysburg was said to have been destroyed during the battle of Reach," he said with puzzlement and confusion, "Who am I speaking to." "AI Cortana sir," Cortana said, annoyed that she had to state her own name. "Cortana?" said Admiral Hood, "Check the files on that AI," he said to someone they couldn't hear. After a moments pause, "It checks sir, but that AI was supposedly terminated at the battle of Reach also, sir," said another man. "Well I'll be damned," said Hood, "Who do you have on board?" "Four Spartans and Sergeant A. J. Johnson," Cortana replied curtly. "Spartans? Give there classification numbers," he said with a somewhat excited tone. " John SPARTAN-117, Fred SPARTAN-104, Linda SPARTAN-058, and Will SPARTAN-043,"Cortana said impatiently. After a moments pause the man said "Permission to board granted, anytime you're ready."
Instantly Cortana started to make way to the Cairo defense platform with a casualty and grace only an AI can accomplish. As they made their way to the station, John thought whatquestions would be asked when they reached the station. He thought about all the people that where lost during the battle of Reach, Halo, and what he thought of as the first strike against the Covenant. Captain Keyes, Foehammer, Warrant Officer Polaski, Corporal Locklear, Lieutenant Haverson, Admiral Whitcomb. How many more heros would this war take from the humans hands.
They neared the station and began to slow down, and that pit in Johns stomach began to sink lower as they 'descended' into the stations docks. As they finally entered the docks, John had a strange feeling that the sleep he got on the way here would be the longest he would get in a long time. John took one last look at Earth. This is what all those heros died for, he pondered to himself, to keep Earth safe, secure, and a secret.
He thought briefly that they had died in vain, that whatever they did didn't stop the Covenant from figuring out the location of Earth. But that was it, what ever they did couldn't stop the Covenant from finding Earth, nor could they have stopped them from coming here and completely obliterating the planet from existence. But what they did stoped the Covenant long enough to make it so that Earth had a chance, instead of none at all.
As the Gettysburg finally touched down and the dock recompressed, the Master Chief, with Cortana safely tucked away in his helmet, and the rest of his team made their way out of the ship and out into the welcome arms of the stations crew, he had one last thought. Everyone knew that the Covenant would get here eventually, but there where heros out there to delay them.
