The Avatar of Scane

The assault was over. The death was over. And all that had consumed him was gone. For the first time in a long time, he rested. And rested. And rested. John knew that ahead lay a greater task than the one now over and gone. Earth would not be humanities last battle. Far from it.
----
The Word of Justice swept over the face of the planet like a great shark, a predator. Its purple exterior reflected light like a beacon, daring all to oppose it. Yet here on this plain, it was safer than any other place in the universe. This crew was on the most powerful planet ever inhabited. They were on High Sanctum.

As it neared the High Temple, the large phantom unleashed a massive volley of codes, all of which were responded to by a resounding klaxon. Massive doors inlaid with seething plasma veins and gold opened like doors to a castle, revealing wide, open bays inside. It swept into it like a nat into a doorway, minuscule compared to the structure now engulfing it. It then gently chose a dock and glided into it, as though its sole purpose had been to deliver this cargo.

As the energy ramp activated, hundreds of eyes were laid upon the ceremonious vehicle, unsure of what the ship brought to them on this day. Slowly a hundred figures floated down the portal like so many ants, so many flies. Yet at a closer glance, gold was seen on every figures body. Elite commanders. These were no ordinary elites, but the highest ranks of the covenant military. The same thought from a thousand minds located themselves on the single platform and crate at the middle of the procession, which steadily moved toward the inner sanctum, the room of the Chosen. What have they brought here?. Still no answer greeted them. But now it would have to deal with the Prophets, which none of them envied.

The small chamber stopped in the middle of the great room. The room glittered with gold and flowing plasma, like beauty unrestricted. Birds of all kinds flew around the expanse, free as they knew. Near the chamber was a great stair, upon each of its steps was a single High Elite, ready to guide any comers to the prophets. Now they stared as one at the single, ugly and square box, a box not worthy of the Prophets eyes. Four Sovereign Elites moved to the box and one began speaking to it. Suddenly mist enveloped from the box and each High Elite moved his eyes to the command elites far behind, suspicion arising. The box opened and a single figure emerged, proud, strong, courageous and...... beaten.

The room was all around him, beautiful and expansive. He saw his goal, his sentence and moved toward the stairs, ready and willing to climb all the way, no matter the length. Slowly he rose and climbed, rose and climbed till his former prison was a small speck. Then he came to the Prophets, assembled upon a plateau in a semicircle around him.

"Do you know why you have been brought here?"

"I am to you an enemy, a foe not worthy of your eyes."
"DO NOT SPEAK TO ME AS A FOOL. I AM NO IMBECILE!"
Moments passed until the figure replied...................
"You have brought me here because I.....I failed to bring the wrath of the Prophets upon the humans. I failed the Council."
"NO! You failed the Covenant! You disgraced our entire alliance. What have you done to our mission but allowed the largest fleet ever assembled to be destroyed by.....humans?"
Another Prophet rose and declared, "He is a traitor!, a liar among elites!"
Another rose to confirm, "He is no elite in my eyes. I say banish him and let the humans punish him as they would. Im sure they would have many unkind things for him, after he nearly destroyed their race."
A Prophet near the center of the circle rose and raised his hands, "Silence. We will have silence. Tell me heretic, what do you know of the Arbiter?"
"He is the will of the Prophets, the savior of the Covenant. He was sent last to assassinate the Great Human, but his mission did not end with success......"
"HE BETRAYED US!"
The head Prophet spoke again, "And what do you know of this "Great Human?".
Thoughts of hate and death flowed through his mind like a stream.
"He is called the 'Death' by the grunts and the 'Heretic Arbiter' by the Elites. He is no normal human. I have seen him destroy phantoms, wraiths, cruisers....and without help. He wears armor like that of the Forerunners, yet weapons of the humans. He takes on ten elites and wins,, hunters and tanks. He is no human. Perhaps he is a demon, or even a Forerunner.
"NO!. He is no Forerunner! How dare you speak of them allied with the humans!?"
"I say only what I must."
"Then tell me this. What do you know about the.....Avatar of Scane?"
"......Nothing, Great One."
"Neither do half of the Prophets in this room. That is because he has never been called before. And now he will be. To the Covenant, you are dead, another body among thousands still on Earth. Even your family and clan believes you are dead, yet I doubt they mourn you. You have seen battle. You have commanded men. And now, you have died. To us, you are...perfect."

He watched as a small triangular pod lowered itself beside him. As it opened light spilled out of it, gleaming upon his nearly naked figure. All four of his jaws opened as he saw the armor inside. He glanced over to see several engineers and the head Prophet beside him.
"You know what you must do. Take what you must. Kill the human.

Now he knew that his mantle was greater than the Arbiters. And his fate would be much greater
