Chapter four: Final run.

"Airspace secure, no nearby ground troops spotted from up here." One of the Hornet pilots said over com.
"Whats the status on the tank squad?" Kazama asked, one Hornet turned around.
"Position three six eight?" There are five of them on a crossroad, no enemies spotted, they have the three sixty formation, all round protection, if thats your destination you had better hurry, they are more vulnerable than they might seem." The pilot said before the group of Hornets took of as they got another call for air support. A short 'good luck', than Axim and Kazama where on their on again with a few marines that again got scared of the thought of being alone again, the stamina boost of having two Spartans in their team had run out way back.

"Lets move it, they're close by and we can't make them wait much longer, every second counts." Axim said, beginning to walk to the road again that they needed to follow. Everyone followed and they made a slight haste to it. Not two minutes later the Scorpions came in sight in the far distance, they just sat there scanning the area, you could tell by their main guns moving all the times in a systematic back and forth while up and down, this Axim noticed trough the scope of his battle rifle. Than just as they where about to cross a crossroad of their own the first sign of Purple came into view from the left. A Wraith, Ghosts, a CovBus, at least four Brute Choppers and allot of ground troops.
"Hide." Kazama whispered just loud enough for the team to hear. It was to late though, a grunt walking nearly upfront spotted them going behind a building into a alley and alerted the rest. Two Ghosts engaged to check it out. As they hovered toward the alley they saw the group sprinting to get out of it on the other side and make it asif they weren't there. Plasma came raging into the alley and bricks of the buildings on both side where molten away like acid on its best. Allot of shots nearly made it to the group and some actually did so Kazama and Axim went last to take the plasma to their shield.
"Where to now?" A marine asked in panic. Axim wasted no time and lead the way while Kazama stayed with the end of the alley to hold of the ghosts just small enough to get trough the alley without bashing their small wing-shaped engines to the walls and making traffic jamming turns. Kazama grabbed his hammer and stood just next to the opening to the alley, waiting for the Ghosts engines to sound loud enough. As they did the stepped in and swung the hammer at them.

A wave of gravity provided the force he needed to slam the first Ghost back into the second one, the one at front slided over the second and pushed the grunt driving it with his head back against the seat, cracking his skull. Kazama put his hammer on his back and took out his battle rifle, he had a opening passed the first Ghost and fired on the second Ghost. The metal of the Ghost made a spark igniting the methane that had leaked from the devastated gas masker the Grunt had on his face. What started as a small inferno reached the methane tank on the Grunts back and turned into a explosion wiping all the ground troops that followed the Ghosts into the alley. The first ghost had outrun the explosion by getting out of it toward Kazama, trying to road kill him but Kazama jumped on it instead and bashed the Grunt of, sitting down and turning to the ally already filling with Grunts and Brutes and Jackals. Just as he wanted to open fire he got hit from his left, it was not plasma. He turned to look and saw two huge wheels charging at him, in between he saw a Brute sitting in the chopper the wheels belonged to. Guns on the front where taring down Kazama's shield and the wheels covered in spikes would run the Ghost with Kazama in it down and under. Jumping of the Ghost he evaded the explosion the it made as the Chopper ran it over. Kazama got up pulling out the Gravity hammer. The Brute Chopper had turned around and went right for him. More shots came from behind, the same kind the first chopper fired. Kazama squeezed the handle of the hammer real tight and as the chopper got close enough he gave it a golf uppercut swing against the right wheel of the chopper.

The choppers front went while capsizing and nearly passing Kazama by its tumble to the side in the capsize. Kazama still jumped aside as the flipped chopper still had great propulsion and the chopper from behind never saw it coming. The two choppers collided, the bottom of the first hitting the wheels of the second. As the first exploded it killed the Brute on the second, than the second exploded. Kazama was glad to have jumped to duck, else he would have been really blown over, the explosions had great force. As he got up he remembered why he had let his team run while he stayed behind, not only was the alley now overflowed with troops, the wraith and CovBus had went around the building. Kazama was in a death for sure situation as it was right now. Kazama Rolled over to dodge a rain of plasma fired at him. The seconds rounds he nearly dodged by another role but things looked grim. Than luck struck, Axim had come back for him, nading the building the Covenant vehicles had to go around from the inside trough broken windows, making it collapse along the direction the ground troops exitted the alley. The covBus got crushed and the other vehicles got cut of. Dust covered sight and the ground troops that where on the right side of the building to attack Kazama had no aim for several seconds, giving Kazama a chance to throw a nade on memory of his last sight, effectively killing a great deal of the troops they where trough the alley. Kazama turned away as sight bettered and started running for the next alley. Brutes where the fastest to follow, gaining up on him. As he entered the alley he turned around and started running back. The first brute that got in sight got three rounds of bullets all over including the face. The next got the same but fired back. Hitting Kazama on the shield with spikes, draining away from the bodyshield fast. As the Brute went down two more took its place but Kazama gained distance. As he saw the length of the alley he had seen as he ran forward - being nearly the length he looked back at - he knew he was almost on the other side. Another burst and he turned around.

He ran out of the alley and was back on the road they where suppose to take. Adrenaline rushed trough his vanes, near death experiences where nothing new, but this was as grim as a situation had ever been for him and he got out. Than he plummeted back to earth at the sound of rocks slamming, the walls of the house to his left collapsed and a few rocks made it to Axim's feet, though harmless in size he was glad none of them hit him. He looked at the gap now made in the building just as several Brutes flew over the pile of ruble and roughly landed all around Axim, their backpacks being drained from the lift boost they provided. Axim was in a tight spot yet again. He counted at least four brutes, all medium of rank but all deadly. He mostly saw Spikers but one Brute Shot caught Axim's glimpse. Axim checked his Battle rifle and saw his clip was half empty, his reserves where down to another clip missing a few bullets, it had apparently already seen some action. As the Brute stretched their legs after the landing they turned to Axim, they all had their weapons ready, not aiming them yet, so did Axim. After a short stand off one Brute with a Spiker on Axim's right aimed the weapon For Axim's head and pulled the trigger. Large long Spikes launched out of the barrel of the weapon, raging for Axim's helmet. Axim was able to role to his front, several other Spikes also missed Axim by inches split seconds later. Axim kneeled toward a Brute with a smoking barrel, not a moment was wasted as Axim aimed his Rifle for the Brutes face, opening fire. The bullets tared trough the Brutes head dress and after the first rain of blood the Brute's face was beyond identification. As the corpse dropped dead on the ground Axim knew the next round of spikes would make their way to him any of the next split seconds and he had to act fast. His rifle would be ready for another burst of bullets after a quick dodge, but after a few bursts he would have to put in his last clip, he had best toss it and find a replacement. He took his chances and rolled over the corpse, landing his hands on the smoking Spiker the corpse provided. Falling on his back he prayed that all weapons where fired before he came to a halt. He looked over the middle of the Spiker and in between the two tips large blades on the lower sides of the blade, opening fire he felt for the first time how great the back-blow was this weapon had. His blow to the shoulder was payed back with two large spikes penetrating the chest of one of the brutes aiming his weapon at Axim. Rolling to the left spikes penetrated the ground where Axim lay and the cracks the spikes made where filled up with blood of the first Brute he had killed. In his role Axim had got up but tumbled down over a large clumb of rock coming to his knees. Knowing he was still under fire he rolled further after hitting the wet cold dirt. By doing so his helmet got covered in mud. It was quickly vaporised by his body shield reacting to a signal on his visor.

As sight got back he aimed his Spiker at another brute. Pulling the strong trigger the spikes raged toward the brute who failed a desperate attempt to dodge. The Brute fell on its back in a loud roar of pain, blood spilled out of his right shoulder on both the entrance and the exit wound and another spike had penetrated one of the Brute's longs. It was not quite dead but it was surely no more thread at the moment. Axim scrambled on his feet, ducking again to dodge the barrel of another Brute's spiker rifle. As the spikes missed Axim's head by inches he aimed his spiker to the brute and fired another round from down to up. The first spike nailed the Brute's left foot to the ground, another spike got him in the chest and the last struck him right in the throat. The Brute fell down but his foot was still forced to stand and the pain was all over, before drowning in his own blood filling his longs he reached out to Axim who was by far close enough to grab. The stretched arm fell on the ground as the last quirks passed. Suddenly a blast hit Axim's bodyshield and he was smacked into a wall behind him broken of to about one and a half meter high. The impact of Axim's heavy suit to the wall made it collapse further. Pain in the neck, back and left arm where overcome by the fear of another such blow to his chest, the Brute shot was a deadly weapon. He got up but tumbled to his left. He had pulled a part of the wall with him, it was attached to his left arm by a thick metal bar that penetrated his shield, armour arm bone. Suddenly the pain was near unbearable and he knew the penetration trough the should had drained it as the shield had tried to vaporize on impact, it happened in such a split second though that this shield and suit where defenseless. He aimed the heavy Spiker rifle toward the Brute with the brute shot only with the strength his right arm still had. All attempts to keep his arm steady failed, but than he saw the perfect timing to shoot, as his arm tried to get back on target and just before passing it again he fired the spikes at the brute. The glory in the success of a aimed shot where overcome by the near perfect dodge the Brute made, simply stepping to his right.

The Brute saw the immobilized Spartan laying on the pillow of bricks and took its own glory. It walked up to Axim without haste, knowing he was not going anywhere. Axim shot again but the haste to do something made him aim way off. The Brute did not even try to dodge and just kept walking. All hope seemed top fade as Axim's right arm gave in to the weight of the weapon and the dismotivation of knowing he would not even hit a Elephant right now. The Spiker rifle slipped out of his hands and fell on the ground. Axim tried to sit up but his left arm held him down.

"Demon, your time belongs to history, my future will be glorious." The Brute said before kneeling down at Axim's feet. Sparks began to appear at Axim's left arm, his bodyshield was regenerating only to attack the metal bar again. The brute held his weapon ready to swing the large blade on the barrel end at Axim's neck.
"You have some praying to do before your head becomes my trophy?" The Brute asked, taking his weapon to Axim's neck and back to ready position to see how the swing would go.
"Well, if you could give me a short minute..." Axim said, hoping for one of Kazama's many great typical last split-second saviours, the Brute however only waited about five seconds before interrupting him.
"Enough, I'll have your head."
With those words spoken a heavy weight lifted of Axim's shoulders, or more like his left shielder. His bodyshield had cut the metal bar in half and the bricks let lose. Suddenly a rush of hope passed trough Axim's body, before he had realized it the Brute shot's blade had hit the bricks Axim's head lay on just half a second ago. Axim had dodged the blade and suddenly realized he had the Spiker rifle in his hands again, its both blades in the chest of the Brute. The Brute fell on its back in a loud roar. Axim now stood at the feet of the Brute that nearly got the better of him.
"A demon can never die, faith is always on his side." Axim said before walking passed the dying Brute and again toward the objective, he had no idea where his team was but he hoped they made it to the Scorpion group. The walk was slow and painful, it seemed to go on and on, than about halfway there from where he had nearly died the sound of engines snuck up from behind him. It took a short while to get his attention but when he turned around he saw a Spectre coming at him. To his relief he saw Kazama and two other marines on it.
"Axim, get in you don't want to look behind you." Kazama said as he signaled him to get on board. Axim's bodyshield flickered as bullets of some kind impacted, doing little damage but enough to make him hurry up.
"Are you bleeding?" Kazama asked looking at Axim's left arm.
"I survived the greatest odds so far, I'll be fine." Axim replied with a weak voice, in against Kazama's fear about the weak voice it was just because he had been trough hell and back one time to many this day. Finally they made it to the safety of the Scorpion tanks and the Brute shoppers that where on their tail ceased to follow them into range of the tanks. To the teams relief the Scorpion tanks where in good shape and all accounted for. Talk about the mission slipped Axim's attention as a Medic treated his Left arm. It seemed a eternity before they began driving to the destination they where to take the tanks to, because the group had reached their objective with so many two Pelicans dropped of extra marines and two warthogs, the Pelicans where already deployed as the mission started, but where Axim and Kazama brought to the tanks like this they would have spared many lived and it would have even spared time, things where as they where and all they could do now is hope this part of their mission would go better.
