Hypernova; Legend Of Spartans part 1
Date: 22 April 2006, 1:34 pm

20 years after the collapse of the Covenant, the Elites have taken over, declaring the humans as allies and ending the Human-Covenant war. Humanity had begun to rebuild, recovering 90 planets and reconstructing cities. The UNSC was also rebuilding its forces, rearming with new technology and recruiting more soldiers.

Drifting among a mass of about 400 completed and uncompleted UNSC warships over Reach II, more than there had ever been during the war, two stood out among all. The Hypernova and the Legend Of Spartans were the largest ships in the area.
The Hypernova was a super battleship, the first of its kind and easily as large as a Covenant Command and Control center. It was armed to the teeth and had 3 meters of Titanium-EX armour plate covering most parts. It carried a formidable arsenal. On its belly was a Super MAC-gun, on its nose were 6 Shiva rocket-tubes, and on the forward fuselage were 50 oversized Archer missile-pods and 20 Anaconda rocket launchers. The bridge was located towards the rear of the underside. Around it were Moray mine launchers, 6 batteries of 50mm auto cannons, and 3 pods of Argent VI missiles for bridge defense. 6 squadrons of Longsword interceptors and Dragonfly heavy ion-bombers were assigned to it. On the top of its forward fuselage, it carried a triple-shot MAC-gun. Such was the immense firepower of the Hypernova, not forgetting its twin Mark IX fusion reactors that kept everything running. The Hypernova had a crew of 900 Marines and 300 staff. It carried an entire battalion of ground vehicles as well.

The Legend Of Spartans was built in memory of the mighty Trafalgar and the official decommission of the SPARTAN-2s who were replaced by the SPARTAN-3s. It was the largest supercarrier in the fleet and carried 15 squadrons of UNSC warplanes. The Legend Of Spartans also carried 4 rotary auto cannon turrets, a new weapon to the UNSC. They were 6-barreled 100mm auto cannons that could pump over 10000 rounds of heavy uranium in 2 minutes.

On their first engagement, a fleet of 20 rebel Covenant ship attacked Sigma Octanus 7. The Hypernova's battlegroup was sent to repel the attackers. Upon arrival, the Covenant ships launched a barrage of plasma at the UNSC ships, melting through and obliterating the Pillar Of Winter, Battlefront and the Inexhaustible lead. As the Hypernova got a lock with its weapons, a signal was sent to the other 6 ships to engage the enemy at will.

The Hypernova opened fire and a Covenant destroyer was shattered into a million fragments. 2 bolts of plasma tried to negotiate the haze but were refracted a million ways instead. A triple-MAC shot gutted a Covenant Cruiser stern to stern, blowing right though her bridge and leaving her floating dead in space, plasma conduits flickering dimly. A split second later, the rest of the UNSC ships opened fire. Thousands of missiles clouded the space with a giant cloud of exhaust as tens of MAC shots raced through the void towards their targets. A carrier was hit by 6 MAC rounds and cracked into three parts, spewing atmosphere and dead Covenant bodies into space. Another trio of destroyers was engulfed by the wave of missiles. Their shields held 400 missiles before the remaining several hundred blew right through to their bridges. One was hit in its reactor and it exploded. The deadly fire washed over another cruiser, destroying them both. Several cruisers were hit by MAC rounds that downed their shields but were otherwise unharmed. The Legend Of Spartans sprayed the entire area with bullets and brought the enemy ships' shields down.
The remaining 2 carriers launched their single-ship fighters and bombers. The UNSC battlegroup retaliated with almost every ship launching all their fighters and interceptors.

Blue six's squadron of Dragonfly twin-fuselage fighters lanced towards the wave of Covenant aircraft. He sat in his flight-seat, watching as his twin engines connected by a streak of ion, nimbly maneuvered though the metal cloud left by the Covenant destroyer. His fighter closely resembled the podracers in the star wars film shown more than 50 years ago. Soon, the enemy was within effective range. His squadron opened up with intense laser fire and the longswords fired their missiles. The Seraphs fired their plasma cannons and the battle was joined.

Blue five was hit by 4 Seraphs tailing him. He screamed over the squadron's come just before his fighter exploded into a cloud of ionized metal. A longsword tried to dodge a melted Seraph but was too late and collided with the dead ship, exploding in a shower of flame and metal. Blue six fired his lasers, blasting away at its armour right inside its shields. As lasers were concentrated light and light can pass through shields, lasers could simply melt a Seraph inside its protective bubble. The Seraph became a molten hulk in a few seconds and he switched targets to another fighter. The longsword's missile flew straight and true, impacting the Covenant bombers and blowing them to smithereens.

Captain Charles stood on the bridge of the Hypernova, watching as the orange fireballs of the longswords, blue strobes of the Seraphs and Green bolts of the Dragonflies flashed through the metal haze. Lieutenant Korabashi shouted "Sir! Super-MAC is ready to fire! Archer pods E9 thorough J5 targeted! Shiva 1 armed!" He was followed by Ensign Gates who shouted "Incoming transmission by dragonfly squadron 2!" The bridge speakers played the pilot's voice loud and clear, "Sir, we are ready to pull out for the Shiva! Enemy aircraft pulling back!" The holo-pedestal next to the tactical screen flickered and an AI appeared. Katana stood, her slender body flashing arithmetic beyond comprehension. "It appears the tables have turned, the humans are now superior in space to the Covenant. I have a firing solution for the Covenant flagship there. Permission to fire?" "Very well then," Captain Charles said, "Fire away."

The entire super battleship shook as all its heavy weapons fired at once. Multiple streaks of MAC-rounds streaked to its target and 200 Archer missiles raced to the Covenant flagship. The Super-MAC round tore through the shields ripped its nose into shreds and tore out its entire row of starboard plasma-turrets. The smaller MAC-rounds burst into its airbays and gutted it almost to the reactors. The Archer missiles ripped the remains of the flagship apart just as it fired 3 plasma torpedoes. The plasma raced towards the Hypernova and melted away a bit more than 2 meters of armour on its portside, the EX armour dispersing most of the energy.

As the UNSC single-ships retreated from the fight, only 45 planes had been lost. The Shiva detonated right in the middle of the Covenant fleet vaporizing all the unshielded ships and partly melting the last destroyer. The UNSC ships had won a battle with the odds of 3 to 10. It was an amazing breakthrough for the Navy and a huge morale boost to all humans alive to hear the news. The Covenant, too, congratulated the Humans for their job well done on eliminating the rebel fleet.

Across the galaxy, a forerunner battleship, Holy Guidance loomed over Omega Halo. Its supernova cannons pivoted slowly on their turrets and the legendary Hellfire Energon beam mounted on its nose glowed a hellish blue. Its forerunner crew long gone, a Brain form sat on the bridge instead. Flood combat, infection and Carrier forms shambled along the corridors. The Flood was going to use the all-powerful forerunner weapons technology to their advantage and conquer the galaxy. The Holy Guidance turned and entered slipstream with coordinates to the new Covenant home world of High Charity The Second.

The huge Holy Guidance accelerated towards the High Charity The Second. It was pinged thousands of times for a response but it did not respond. Every single drone and dropship opened fire on it and a wave of plasma rushed for the Forerunner vessel. However, instead of unyielding destruction that would destroy any ship, its shields had only depleted to a half. The mighty Forerunner battleship fired its supernova cannons.

4 super dense rounds rushed forward, at the same time collapsing on themselves. They became mini supernovas, exploding with tremendous force and literally erasing the drones and dropships that came too close from existence. The several thousand Covenant warships in the area immediately closed in on this new foe. When it was surrounded, all 500 Covenant ships closest to the Forerunner ship unleashed a broadside of Plasma. The tidal wave of boiling energy connected with the Holy Guidance but all it did was level its shields. The Holy Guidance fired its Hellfire Energon Beam.

The red-gold beam flashed forward, vaporizing any Covenant vessel in it's path. The beam hit a Covenant Command and Control station, punching through its tough shields and blasting a soccer-field sized hole out the other side. Ship master Esna Tatarmee was barking orders from his Capitol ship when a turbo laser bolt ripped through his bridge. The other gold Elites looked on in horror as his screen went blank.

The Holy Guidance went on a killing spree through the mass of Covenant ships, crushing destroyers that stood in its way as well. Plasma torpedoes and projector beams impacted on its armour but did little damage to the forerunner metal. The Covenant hierarchy was evacuated from the area immediately as the several Covenant carriers unloaded all their dropships onto the Holy Guidance. The Covenant borders rushed into the Forerunner battleship and were met by the Flood. Combat forms jumped into the air and plasma flew about as both armies clashed at the airlocks.

Yaptap was knocked to the ground by an Elite. He turned around and saw the dead Elite's vacant eyes staring at him. Terrified, he scrambled for cover in a corner. There, he saw one of his comrades running past with several infection forms clinging to his back. Yaptap fired at them with his plasma pistol. They popped instantly. The two Grunts hurried down the hall, picking their way through the body-covered floor. Dead Jackals, Elites, Grunts and every sort of Flood form littered the floor. They ran past another skirmish down the hallway and almost bumped into a new wave of flood. The second Grunt was killed instantly by a human combat form while Yaptap ran away. He met a dead end and saw the flood rounding the corner. He raised the plasma pistol to his head and fired…

"Sir! Intercepting long-range Covenant transmission!" yelled an ensign on the bridge of the Hypernova. Captain Charles thought to himself, "Hope this isn't another one of those Covenant trouble-makers…" The ensign handed Charles the printout. It read, "Unidentified warship attacking us. Many ships lost with all claws. Send help immediately!—Covenant hierarchs". Charles was shocked. What single-vessel could destroy so many Covenant ships without being destroyed on its own? He sent the printout to the high-command on Reach II with a request to lead 48 UNSC ships to investigate.

Deep down under 20 kilometers of Reinforced titanium and concrete, composite plates, Granite and shock absorbers, the top brass sat around the table. General Schwarz hammered his fist into the table "THESE COVENANT ******** ALMOST KILL US ALL AND NOW THEY ASK FOR OUR HELP?" High Admiral Stanley replied calmly, "If not for them, would we have improved our technology of warships? We cannot just forget them while they are all slaughtered can we?" General Schwarz sat silently at his seat. "I asked you a direct question and you WILL answer me or I will have you demoted all the way to Private." "No, sir", General Schwarz replied. General Mohamed suggested, "I strongly approve of the Hypernova and the Legend Of Spartans leading a fleet of UNSC ships to investigate. First of all, we have to help eliminate the flood. Second, we can get a close-up look at Forerunner technology at its finest." The other brass started murmuring among themselves. Finally, High admiral Stanley stood up. "I agree. We shall give Captain Charles his request."

Captain Charles stood in the shuttle as he inspected the other UNSC ships assigned on his mission. Most were freshly built destroyers like the Devastator and the cruiser, Solarfire but the thing that caught his eye was the handful of old warships from the previous war. There was the Gettysburg, salvaged and repaired when it was returned by Spartan 117. It had been rearmed and refitted to be more powerful than before. "This is going to be one hell of a scout mission," thought Charles. The shuttle finished its course and turned back to the Hypernova.

"Katana, give me fifty percent power for the Primary reactors," Charles barked when he stepped onto the bridge. "Done. Reactor shakedown in ten seconds," Katana's body pulsed a cool pink. "Lieutenant Korabashi, give a weapons check." The lieutenant's fingers flew across the keyboard as he typed in code after code. "Archers missiles ready sir! Shivas online! MAC-guns charging twenty percent! Bridge defense systems on standby! All squadrons on full alert sir!" he shouted. "Very well. Katana, let's move this crate", Charles said. The massive ship rumbled to life and began accelerating.

Katana calculated the slipstream coordinates for High Charity The Second and sent the data to the other ships as well. The Legend Of Spartans recalled all its fighters and prepared to pass into slipspace. Charles looked at his tactical screen, unsure of how many ships would survive the new enemy after so many Covenant ships had been destroyed. All he could do was lead his men into battle and fight like a good soldier…
