FORTRESS OTTAWA

Prologue

The Delta Hotel In Ottawa, Ontario

******************

Lieutenant John C. Wallace stood on the balcony of his first floor hotel room staring at the sunrise. He then turned to his well made bed and the two pictures with frames that he took everywhere with him. One was of his wife, and the other of his troop. The 36th Mafia Men was their adopted name for he and 10 others of the 100 were actual military troops, the rest were just trainees or militia who had signed on, he was especially worried about the lack of snipers. He picked up the picture of his wife who was probably in the local hospital readying for the predicted Covenant assault. She was beautiful, a petite woman with blond hair but she had been involved in sports so therefore was nearly as fit as he was, well that depends on how you look at it. He put down the picture of his wife and picked up the picture of his group. The Canadians were not known as a military power and because of submittance of land to the UNSC and the split of Quebec from Canada, the great nation was now a lot smaller. As he looked at the picture, he focused in on three men. One of them was Justin Carhein, aka "Chipmunk." "Chipmunk," was named so because no matter how little fat he had he still had puffy cheeks and buck teeth, and he was a bit short, with dark hair and a Scottish accent. "Chpmunk was always ready for a fight with his automatic shotgun. Hanz Gatsburg, a green recruit held his sniper rifle like he really knew how to use it, and he was almost a pro shot. Hanz had a German look about him but spoke perfect English, he had blond hair and blue eyes and knew how to use his head. His favoured weapon was the Beretta 9mm, when he wasn't using his sniper rifle that is. Rachid Kamnell held his old AK-47 knock off (the AK-60) with a fierce determination in his eyes, Rachid wanted to prove himself a loyal Canadian because he came from a Pakistani family and there was still some unrest about terrorist, though there had been no attacks anywhere in over 10 years. John began tho think about the nickname he had gotten over the years, he was only twenty-six, but in one battle with the covenant, he had killed a group of two Elites, five Jackals, and ten Grunts all alone, not counting other kills with backup, some called him MC (though he was no Spartan). John looked at the images of these three men, he wondered what they were doing at this moment.

Elsewhere in the Delta Hotel

Private Justin Carhein, aka "Chipmunk," hefted his automatic shotgun as he put down his newly acquired SMG. The SMG was a fine weapon created by the UNSC, but the shotgun was his weapon of choice, he had a heavily muscled frame because he was always trying to work off his puffy cheeks that gave him his nickname. It wasn't that he didn't like the name, it was just there was only one part of his body that was not hard muscle and that annoyed him. He looked over with slight annoyance at the blond haired, blue eyed Hanz, and chucked a shotgun shell at him.
"Hanz," Justin yelled in his acquired Scottish accent, "ya don't need to clean those blasted weapons anymore, there won't be any metal on 'em left to shoot with if ya don't stop."
"Eh?" said Hanz, "Chippy what do ya mean, I can clean 'em all I want I want my pistol and sniper rifle to be ready when we have to face that Cove' scum." Hanz went back to slowly reassembling the newly-cleaned barrels of his Berretta 9mm pistol and his SM2 sniper rifle. "Besides, your just militia, you can't boss me around," Hanz finished.
"I don't need to clean ol' Betsa tho," said Justin, "she's fine the way she is."
"Quiet, all of you!" Rachid yelled, "I want to get some sleep while I still can," Rachid had a chip off his shoulder when it came to people, the only people he trusted were his commanding officers, and event then he was often still uneasy. THUMP! The door slammed open and a CO yelled, "Covenant dropships coming in fast, get to your previously discussed rally points." All over the building the same thing was happening, snipers reassembling there gear, riflemen yelling "Lock and Load!" and some men just getting ready to wet themselves. As the 36th Mafia Men headed for their assigned defence coordinates, each had something on his mind, may it be brave or cowardly, each was ready to do his job to protect this little piece of Canada.
