Sergeant Chris Johnson yawned widely as he sat in mess hall, finishing up what was supposed to be chili(to Sarge it just looked like a big pile of chunky, gray, wet clay). Suddenly Private Jack Mendoza rushed up to him. "Sir! Captain Keyes wants you on the bridge!" he shouted, being careful not to make direct eye contact with Sarge. "At ease, soldier!" he said trying to get Mendoza not to be so robot-like. Immediately his salute and his shoulders fell. "Thank you, sir!" he said, gratefully. "You're always so stiff; loosen up!" Sarge said, getting up and walking for the door. Always during mess call... he thought as he walked into the bridge. "Ah! you got my message!" Said Captain Keyes, smiling as Sarge walked in. "Listen, Sergeant, I need you to check on the SPARTANs in cryo." "Yes, sir!" Sarge replied, and he turned and headed toward the cryo-sleep chambers. Why make me do this? he thought as he passed the sign saying: CRYO 2. He could just tell the engineers to report status! Apparently the engineers thought the same thing as they had looks of mild suprise on thier faces when he walked in, asking them for the SPARTANs' status. "Well, they're all perfectly in cryo-sleep and, oh, there's the Chief sleeping curled up like that again, I mean, how does he do that?" asked Sam, one of the engineers, incredulously. " Well, I guess none of them died while sleeping, eh?" asked Sarge, yawning again. "Nah, all sleeping like babies." replied Tom, the other engineer. "Okay, then." said Sarge, turning again and heading for bridge again. He was midway through the first hallway when... PSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The impact of the explosion rocked the ship and sent Sarge slamming into the wall. WHAM! "WHAT THE F***?!?" Sarge swore loudly, getting up and gingerly rubbing a huge bump that had appeared on his left shoulder. "Sergeant! Get the Master Chief and the other SPARTANs up to the bridge immediately! Come back up here with them!" boomed Keyes' voice over the intercom. "Aye, aye, sir!" Sarge responded, and started sprinting toward Cryo 2. Due to his superior Marine training, he got there in about 30 seconds. "Keyes... wake... SPARTANs..." Sarge wheezed, out of breath from his sprint. The engineers managed to decipher what he was after, and awoke the SPARTANs. "Time alreeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaadyyyyyyyyyyyy?" the Master Chief said, trying to stifle a huge yawn. By this time Sarge had regained his voice. "Chief! Captain Keyes needs you on the bridge; the Covenant are attacking Reach!" he said, just in time for another large: PSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Chief's expression became a lot more serious. "Quick! SPARTANs! Follow me!" he shouted, his voice booming and echoing off the walls of Cryo 2. They sprinted all the way up to the bridge(except to get their weapons), so when they got there, Sarge had to lie down, gasping for breath. "Sir!" said the Chief, as they ran through the door(he and the other SPARTANs being cyborg super-soldiers, so they could run like that without breaking a sweat). "Chief! you need to activate the anti-orbital cannons in the main city of Reach in order to fight off the Covenant cruisers!" said Keyes, looking distressed and having just stopped talking to Cortana. Sarge knew what was troubling him. Reach was extremely close to Earth, and if the Covenant found Earth... Sarge did not allow himself to think about it. "After that, contact the other cities and tell them to do the same: activate the anti-orbital cannons and tell other cities to do the same. That should spread the defense quicker. Do you understand?" Keyes said, exasperated at having to talk that long without stopping. "I understand, sir!" the Chief said. " Good, move out!" Keyes said pointing toward the door. The Chief and the other SPARTANs left the bridge in a hurry. "Sergeant!" Keyes yelled, rounding on him. "You need to rally up all the UNSC forces and move them onto their ships. We need to scatter our troops to the colonized planets the Covenant have not discovered yet. There is nothing we can do for this colony..." Keyes said with a pained look on his face. "Why is there nothing to do for the colony, sir?" asked Sarge fighting back the tears. All those women and children.. it wasn't fair! "The colony ships are not equipped with ion cannons; they wouldn't make it out of the atmosphere..." said Keyes with another pained look on his face. " I... I understand, sir." said Sarge weakly. "Okay, move out!" said Keyes, apparently trying to get Sarge out before he burst out crying. Sarge started toward the exit, saying inwardly: Any scumbag who calls himself a Covie's gonna be eatin' 14.5mm rounds when I'm done with him...
