Starling looked at the elite. The creature was now focusing on its trapped claw. It began taking the armor off the area then started chewing its own claw off. "HEY! What the hell are you doing?" yelled Starling. "STOP!"
The elite new this creatures purpose to well. "It wants me to stay here until back up arrives so they can torture me. I will not allow it!" it began chewing its arm again. Starling saw it was no use arguing so he took out his pistol and shot dangerously close to its head. "I said STOP!" Starling knew that one shot could kill him because his shield would have prevented him from chewing his arm.
"Hold on a minute." Said starling. "I'll get you out." He lightly ran to the back of the ship were the engine, though horribly damaged, may be working. He took out his knife and started randomly cutting hard ware or whatever might send power to the ship.
Keeping his eye on the door on the elites hand he kept cutting until it looked like the door lost tension. He went back to the front of the ship and, although keeping his distance from the elite, pulled up the door.
Even in the tired state of the elite he suddenly became alive and jumped up and onto starling. But starling was too fast for him. By the time it was on him he had his pistol out and had the barrel pressing hard on the neck of the creature pointed up, towards its head.
Starling flipped the elite off him and jumped back, gun still fixed on its head. "I free you and this is how you repay me?" though speaking another language the elite could tell by the tone of starling voice what he said.
"He must be MOCKING me! He thinks he is so tuff he can challenge me, but when I fight he draws a weapon! That cowardice fool!" thought the by now, rather pissed off elite. "Arg. This is going to be a lot harder than I thought." Starling said to himself.
Starling walked back to the crash site. As he did he kept his pistol out and kept a sharp eye out for the elite who was watching him intently.
" What is the enemy doing? Why has he freed me and then left! These things never show mercy says the prophets. What is this things purpose," Thought the elite. " I must watch it. Maybe the enemy is more than what the prophets say."
As starling watched the elite darted away behind a large hill. " Oh great. Maybe it wasn't such a good idea. Now I have to worry about an elite killing me in my sleep." Starling sat down. Mockingbird had crashed in a crevice that originally may have been a very big river.
Soon he began to feel sleepy and went into a Very light, tense sleep, gun in hand. He had dreams of the crash over and over. Then his dream began to change. He was in the middle of a huge ocean with no land in sight. As he was floating in the water he saw a huge fin rise and start circling him. It started to swim directly towards him and it became a huge covenant ship, and the water became space and were he was before was earth. He was floating in space, helpless as the ship began to charge its weapons.
Suddenly he woke out of a freezing sweat. It looked to be early morning and the sun was still down. He got up. The fire had died down to some embers. The ship had been mostly burned up. He made his way to the stream, keeping his eye out for the elite. As he approached it, he noticed the elite taking a drink as soon as the elite saw him he crept back behind a hill. Starling took his canteen, filled it, took a drink and washed his face. As he rose he noticed some fish in the water. That reminded him of how hungry he actually was. Nutrient supplements can keep you alive physically, but not eating real food for long periods of time can make you emotionally unstable. Besides, stupid pills never hit the spot anyway. He looked to the nearest tree and broke off a long, thin branch. Using his knife he neatly sliced off all of the leaves. He then made the tip into a sharp spear. He went back to the stream and started spearing the fish. His first three shots were quite off course but once he became used to the primitive tool he caught six small fish in an hour. He used some still hot metal to cook the fish on.
As he carefully ate the fish, avoiding the bones, he saw the elite half behind a tree staring at the water. He began to crouch and he tried to catch the fish using his claws. But To know avail however for his bulky claws was much to slow to catch the fish. He then gave up and slumped against the tree, wallowing in his own failure.
Starling watched this and decided that he could spare a fish or two. He got up and carried two cooked fish to the stream and threw them to the other side. "Hear," said starling "I'm not hungry, you can have these" even though he was actually still starving he hoped this might be considered a treaty to the alien.
Uzintar watched as the "heumin", which they appear to call themselves throw the fish onto the side of the bank that he was on. As it walked away uzintar began to devour the fishes, ignoring the bones. "I could use this to my advantage" thought uzintar, "I will make "friends" with this "heumin" until I'm rescued and he will provide me with food until then.
Starling noticed the elite staring at him. He tried to shove it off but his stare kept bringing him back. When the elite finished he walked over to starling, staying the withed of the river from him. He sat, facing him as if in a sign of peace. Starling sat up and thought about what to do.
Starling built up courage and said, "Robert, my name is Robert Starling" while pointing to himself. The elite looked at him and said "rawbort". "That's right," said starling. "Robert" I'm Robert, and your?" he pointed to the elite. The elite responded by saying "uzintar zantinor". "Uzeentaar? That's your name?" said starling. The next few days were quite awkward for both "Uzi" which starling nicknamed the elite and "bor" which the elite named starling who was ancient warrior of the elites. Starling began teaching Uzi how to speak English. He learned to understand the sound of a question and learned were, how, why, what, and when.
In the afternoon of the third day Uzi saw a covenant ship in the distance and thought about what would happen next. Uzi had built a trust with starling and did not what him hurt. He knew that being allied with a human was unacceptable and he did not know what to do. His question was soon answered when he realized the ship was slightly tilted and was badly injured. It had deep wounds of human and covenant artillery.
It began to lose altitude and crashed about 50 meters from their crash site. The elite sprinted over while starling made best he could with his broken leg. Uzintar arrived to find the ship totaled. All crew died except for one grunt. Uzi knelt down to him. It appeared that many of his bones were broken and there was a big whole in the tube from his tank leading to his mouthpiece. The grunt looked up. He saw the elite, its massive body blocking the sun. Uzintar asked him what happened. The grunt began to whisper about an incredibly strong army and some kind of flood. Soon he had to stop for he was barely strong enough to either breath or talk. The grunt was breathing fast and irregular, and he constantly coughed. He knew he was going to die but he didn't want to. He slowly brought his hand to his pocket and pulled out a small gadget. He attempted to activate it but he was so weak that he could not. Uzintar, realizing what he was trying to do to took the round object and pushed its small button. Immediately it made a whining sound and a hologram appeared above it. It was of the grunt and his family, on his daughters 6 birthday. She opened her present and jumped for joy as she realized it was a set of hovering spheres that glowed and swirled. She took them and threw them across the room so that the objects would spill beautiful lines of colorful smoke that would refract and color light. Soon the short movie ended and the grunt seemed to be at peace.
As Uzintar watched, the grunt slowly began to fade. His rapid and irregular heart and breathing rate seemed to calm and slow, his eyes became gray and cloudy, his constant coughing subsided, and the boiling pain he felt as his body temperature rose steadily from the multiple breaches in his suit seemed to leave him.
The grunt looked up at the elite for the last time before it was too difficult to focus. He wanted to cry, to have someone from his family to hold him as he died, but there was no one. The elite was the only one present, a creature that looked down on his kind, an arrogant superior. But as he had looked at the elite, he saw pity, and sorrow in his eyes, as a general sees a good man slaughtered and thinks of all the things he could have been used for. This army was his family, and he felt comforted by this, because now, the grunt wouldn't die alone.
Uzi stood up and looked over at starling who knew it was best to keep his distance. The elite's look was of sorrow and starling assumed there were no survivors. He walked over to the wreckage next to Uzi. "Why?" said starling. The elite looked him and tried to find the words to say it. He picked up a stick and began drawing in the sand. First he drew the covenant symbol. "The covenant?" said starling. Then he drew the U.N.S.C. symbol. "U.N.S.C.?" thought starling. Then the elite drew Halo and a simple figure inside it and circled the drawing. "Halo...?" said starling. "There is something inside it? A creature?" Starling was confused. What could be in Halo? He thought for a while and came to the conclusion that "well whatever it is it is obviously very powerful and will be very dangerous to the U.N.S.C." "Come on," continued starling "lets see what we can salvage". Uzintar and starling began searching the ship. There were three jackals, two elites (none of which Uzi knew), and five more grunts. The elite saw that the dead elite's armor were mostly intact and traded his badly damaged armor for theirs. Then, he was very happy to find that the armors energy shield still worked. As he activated it sparked and slowly powered up. "Not nearly at full power but better than nothing". Thought the grateful elite.
Soon they were almost finished when Uzi noticed something strange in the ship. He motioned Starling over to the site. In the control room there was a hatch that could be opened to reveal certain hardware and engine parts. The hatch was covered in strange green mucous and it looked as though someone stuffed it with something so that the hatch would bulge. The room had a horrid stench and for some reason made Uzi, who was normally comfortable in a drop ship, very nervous. The room was just big enough to fit both starling and Uzi. The elite moved his claw over the button that opened the hatch. He took his other claw and started to count down with his fingers. Starling had his pistol ready as Uzintar counted down. Four...three...two...one and the hatched busted opened. Because of the pressure on the hatch, the door flew and hit starling in the head and chest, knocking him down.
Suddenly a creature the size of the elite fell out and hoped up. The creature suddenly flung its tentacle at Uzintar. The elite quickly jumped back and avoided most of the blow but was hit none-the-less and his shield dropped to almost nothing. As the thing came for another devastating blow it was barraged with 12.7mm semi-armor-piercing high explosive rounds. Starling shot it in the knee, making it keel slightly. He hit it in its ribs, thigh and arm finally knocking it down. Even after it fell it tried to get up again and starling finished his clip, nearly cutting the grotesque creature in half. As starling started to get up, three small round creatures jumped out. Two attacked Uzi who was saved by his shield and one attacked starling.
Starling saw the bulbous creature attach itself to his foot. His head was bleeding and felt woozy as he tried to get up. Suddenly he felt sharp pain begin to enter him and shoot up his leg to his spinal cord until he could simply not take anymore and fell into a dream-like stasis.
