CHAPTER 1
1:52 pm, outer colony world
The trip wired flare burst into the inky night sky. And all hell broke loose. Marines leaped from their fox holes, panicking and trying to make sense of the situation. But even as they left their trenches and holes, they were mercilessly gunned down by the swarming horde of Covenant. Like an angry flood, they obliterated anything that got in their way.
Death was everywhere. Plasma grenades discharged, burning away the flesh of the human soldiers. Needler rounds pelted the marines, and peppered their armour and flesh alike with relative ease. The screams of dying marines droned out the sounds of gunfire. The wet, mossy floor of the forest was slick with human gore. Even as they attempted to call reinforcements, it was hopeless. By the time anyone responded, the radioman was probably being slaughtered like the rest of them.
In five minutes, over 70 marines were killed.
In the distance, privates Miller and Smith, unknowing of the carnage, contiued their march towards the ammo dump.
"So, how much farther? my feet are killing me man!"
Smith's complaints had always annoyed the hell out of Miller, even though they were best freinds. Every time he whined a complaint, it made him want to beat the living crap out of him.
"Shut it. Read the sign ace," miller grunted, and nodded towards the road sign.
1 km.
"Easy enough, eh Smithy?" Miller chuckled. Smith spotted something. "Look over there!" Smith was pointing off into the forest. They saw something metalic gleaming. It seemed to be off the road just a few yards. It was hard to tell in the dark.
" To bad you had to go and drop the freakin' night vision on our last patrol, Smith. We couldve used 'em."
" Fine I'll go take a look. If you insist.." Smith reluctantly edged cautiously towards the metalic mass.
He walked right up to it, and turned on his flashlight. He fell over backwards when he saw what it was.
It was a covenant "bus" armoured transport. Surounded by dozens of sleeping grunts. Two covenant engineers worked on the plasma cannon. Smith jumped to his feet, and tripped over the lumpy form of a grunt.
The grunt screeched, and the others followed suite. They scattered, not knowing what was going on. The two marines had no choice. It was fight. Or die.
The pair of them opened fire with their Ma5B assault rifles, cutting down the tiny swarm of primitive creatures, splattering slick blue flurescent gore all over the forest.
The pair of them then turned on the engineers, but discovered that they were nowhere to be seen.
After they surveyed the scene, Miller unleashed the longest sentance of the most vile language known to mankind. Then there was silence.
Minutes passed, and Smith finally got the idea.
"Lets take it."
The two marines hopped aboard the craft, Miller taking the what seemed to be the drivers cock pit, and Smith took the front plasma cannon.
"let me try to get a feel for this flying tin can."
Miller began to randomly mash buttons on the control console. Finally he hit the right switch, and the engine hummed to life. The bulky transport slowly hovered upwards, until it was about 3 feet off the ground. He grabbed what seemed to be control sticks, and he pushed forward. With a massive jolt, the craft roared forward at 30 miles an hour. he eased off the sticks and brought it down to a stop.
" Its a little sensitive, don't you agree Smith??" "YOU THINK????" Smith wheezed. He was pure white. The sudden acceleration had knocked the wind out of him. Miller gently edged the sticks forward, and the came up to speed and headed off towards the ammo dump.
They arrived minutes later, and found what remained of the ammo cache. A smoldering hole of destruction was all that was left. The pair stared disbelievingly at what remained of the small base.
Suddenly, a rocket shot straight out at the transport, hitting the back end of the covenant craft, sending it spinning. Miller jumped free of the craft before it hit the ground. Smith wasn't as lucky. The bus flipped over on its top, and exploded.
Miller looked up to see the burning wreckage of the transport. Smith had minimal chance for survival.
Blue green flames jetted from the rear of the covenant vehicle. There was another explosion, and shrapnel flew everywhere, shredding nearby gas cans, oil drums, and trees.
Smith crawled out from underneath the wreckage, dazed, but unscathed. He pulled out his pistol, expecting to see a fight. "Bring it on, why don't ya?" He barked at unseen enemies.
"come on! I'm still here. Where are y'all?"
"Smith? You all right man?" Miller cautiously rose to his feet.
"Me?" replied smith stupidly."I'm cool." Smith then fell frontwards on the ground. Miller rushed towards his fellow marine and helped him to his feet.
There was another explosion, and a Wraith mortar tank roared into the clearing.
