Plasma Burns and Bullet Shells -Chapter 8 Dec. 18, 2552 0400 Covenant Base, Germany Lieutenant Patterson's mission clock
Patterson opened up with everything he had, his MA5B blazing. Finally Henderson got a jackhammer into the line of covenant emerging from a demolished door. The officer looked back to see the private fly across the room in a bloody mess, his remains splashing onto a wall. Two more marines gave under a steady wave of plasma. "Holy crap!" a marine had time to yell before a plasma grenade engulfed him and another noncom. Staff Sergeant Mendeza was Patterson's last sergeant. "Collins! Get over here!" Mendeza barked. Collins took out three frags, hurling them towards the onslaught of covenant. Four marines took the opportunity to force the door closed while waiting for orders from their CO. "Patterson to Winters, Covenant are braking through the doors, they want this ship back, sir, please advise!" Another scream echoed over the comm. "Dang it, hold tight marines, push 'em back, that's an order!" Winters said. Daniel Patterson locked in a new clip and ordered the marines back. The pelican Charlie 248 lay on the other side of the bay. Patterson ran to it and broke out a shotgun. The ten alive gathered around the door, pushing down covenant containers for cover. The door broke and assault weapons and shotguns spewed slugs into the mob.
Both 30mm chain emplacements opened up. The conference room was holding a new wave of covenant, which was 75% Hunters and Brutes. A yellow-green explosion flamed through the left gun station and Private Rose screamed, dropping off the staircase. The marines were firing from the balconies and windows. Davidson blew a hole in an Elite that crossed the lines of 30mm slugs. A sniper round crackled and a Brute fell. Jones was back, rifle blazing 14.8mm. Fitzgerald pushed out the door firing. "Advance!" the leatherneck ordered. 7.62mm bullets sprayed the aliens. Tyrell aimed and fired into a team of Grunts. In his peripheral vision, the marine saw a Hunter elevated a soldier with its shield, and blew him to the sky with the fuel rod gun. A burst from the weapon took the animal down. Plasma rifles whined and assault weapons rattled. "Firing!" one leatherneck yelled. Scott broke open a window and made use of his SAW gun. Two Phantom interceptors fired blast after blast upon the marines' real estate. "Covering fire!" a British marine yelled beating a Brute to a pulp with the 30mm rounds. The onslaught advanced killing two more PFCs. A douse of Skyhawk fighters screamed overhead. The fighters obliterated the Phantom and the other attempted to drop off some troops but crashed into a street sign. "Alpha 2 this is Delta 4 the cavalry has arrived!" a leatherneck exclaimed over the comm. The covenant's odds backfired and a sweep of bullets hacked them down.
"Let 'em have it!" Patterson ordered, all of the ODST opened up, shotguns blazing and assault rifles raging. The first causalities were covenant held; even the shielded Elites couldn't withstand the concentration. The team snipers lay on the loading bar, carefully knocking down any creatures that slipped past the slug fest. Collins shouldered the M19 with two other troopers. "Clear!" one yelled and the rockets flew true, painting the walls with covenant. "That's the last of them, area secure." Medina said, lowering his rifle.
"There is to many, and these human are elite, the best I've fought ever, my assault team has been slaughtered by a single squad of them." The Field Master said from within the hanging shadows of the counsel room of the supreme prophet. "No, we have slain too many, and conquered to much to fail now." The prophet said. Field Master 'Zanavee raised a threatening plasma lance and then a second. "I shall bring an elite team of my kin to retake the control center." 'Zanavee said. "No." the prophet said curtly. We shall attack from the air." For once the Elite realized how truly idiotic the prophets were, the humans would never leave the shields open, and a super-advanced AI blocked all control codes. That would never work but if that was possible, more of the humans, at least one hundred, would be even more complicated to deal with. 'Zanavee thought. Tama 'Ulmammee was sprawled across a snowy terrain some where outside of the circumference of the base. He finally regained consciousness, searching the terrain. He realized he'd been out for hours; it had snowed a considerable amount since. Tama pulled himself to his feet and found a crashed Banshee with 'Rolazee's body riddled with bullets. The second Banshee lay nearby, and luckily, it was intact with the exception of a few bullet pocks. Tama looked in the interior and it appeared to have caught fire earlier. "How could I have survived?" Tama mused. The Elite climbed in, did a quick check of controls, and gunned the engines.
"Area secure, this wing of the city is ours!" Ryan shouted, arms outstretched and tongue out to collect snow flakes like a young child. Tyrell tried suppressing his smile. The thick white blanket carpeted the combat zone. Ryan and Fitzgerald broke through an apartment and peered through a window to see the largest plaza Ty had ever seen. A Wraith mortar tank sat, with two Ghosts and easily 30 black clad Elites, 25 Jackals, 40 Grunts, with 6 Hunters and several Brutes. "Sgt. Tyrell Fitzgerald to all marine squads, I have located their head quarters at coordinates 0 5 8 5, copy?" All right marines you heard him, let's move! Lieutenant Davidson ordered to his team. Three hours later the 128 marines assembled. Jones led the snipers into promising locations and Davidson organized a battle tactic. The massive battle that followed lasted two hours. The snipers started things up with 40 crackles. More covenant filed into the fray. The marines charged like WWII second rangers up the beaches of Normandy, except now Germans and Americans fought for a common cause. The leathernecks fired hell upon the aliens. Four marines fell but the troopers were forced to ignore them until the medics found their way here. McCoy made another entrance hauling Deep behind a covenant barricade to patch him up. Tyrell squeezed the trigger and a burst was released smashing into a wounded Brute. Several leathernecks drew their M19s and wrecked havoc on the hapless aliens. Fitzgerald fired continuously, his mind going numb from the death around him. His assault rifle finished its last magazine and went dry. The marine un holstered the M9D pistols and felled a Hunter. Again and again the pistols rang, knocking targets off their feet. Then the Hunter's bond brother swung its massive shield towards Fitzgerald. Ty fired rapidly and a lucky round flew into the Hunter's neck. Two SMGs lay on the floor near Brant. Michael took cover, as did Tyrell. Brant handed the leatherneck the weapons and he accepted them thankfully. The subs rattled, taking down the Elite. The last Alien fell and the 89 marines secured the area and the base belonged to UNSC. One hundred and eleven marines had died including Deep. The battle aboard the Avenger hadn't gone as planned but the marines only lost 24 men. The Chief and Waller landed in the plaza with two other pelicans. The Avenger with its survivors jetted into the atmosphere as the last pelican loads of marines departed. In mid-air the covenant ship detonated in a nuclear explosion.
The battle for Germany was over, but the battle for Earth was just beginning. This was still a gigantic gain for the UNSC, an entire country wrenched from covenant hands. Tyrell knew his fight wasn't nearly over, and unfortunately not all of the troopers would be returning home, but Fitzgerald would be if the battle for Earth was a success. But now he would have to keep his mind battle-ready. The pelicans landed and marines headed for Alpha Base.
