June 3, 2551 0400 Hours, Onboard UNSC transport, The Mississippi
Sergeant Jack Richardson exited the briefing room, as soon as he entered the barracks; each soldier stood up and saluted.
"At ease men, I want to talk to you."
The sergeant's eyes scanned over all 50 of the soldiers, "Alright ladies and gentlemen, you know what we're about to do. The Covies have captured a military base in the Outer Colonies. I don't know why it's so important, but the boys at ONI want it back. And we are going to do that, no matter how many methane-breathing, split-lipped bastards get in our way. Is that clear?!"
All of the ODSTs shouted in unison, "Sir, yes, sir!"
Jack grinned, "Now let's go! I want each of you in your drop-pods in 8 minutes, and that's because I'm being generous!"
Spartan-026(Rick) stood with the other members of Grey Team, 064(Mary) and 009(Vincent), inside the area dubbed "Hell's Waiting Room". It was here that ODSTs would enter their drop capsules and be dropped in the battlefield. As the rest of the soldiers entered their pods, the Spartans entered their own individual ones.
"Get ready, drops will be in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1
"
The drop-pods detached from the ship, hurtling into space. As they headed towards the planet's surface, Mary turned on her communicator,
"Rick, what's our mission objectives again?"
Rick smiled; it was Mary's old joke to ask this question. Both Spartans knew that talking over the radio left them vulnerable to eavesdroppers.
"Negative, I'll tell you on the surface."
As the pods began heating up as they passed through the atmosphere Rick began mentally preparing himself for the mission. Objective 1: Retake the ONI base. That would be simple. Objective 2: Defend the base against Covenant counterattack. Easy. Objective 3: Kill High Ranking Covenant Official on planet. Rick paused; ONI had confirmed that the base was built around a Forerunner structure that had been excavated. Surely an important religious leader of the Covenant would be on the planet. If not
The pod jolting forward caught off Rick's thoughts and he lost consciousness.
"Rick, wake up!"
Rick opened his eyes; the armored faces of Mary and Vincent were staring down at him. He pulled himself out of the drop-pod, "I'm ok. Where are we?"
"On the surface," Vincent replied, "We've located the base. Sgt. Richardson suggested that we should move now, under the cover of darkness."
Rick grabbed his battle-rifle, "Then what are we waiting for?"
The ODSTs and Spartan Grey Team traveled for several hours, through fields, copse and forest. When the ONI base was finally sighted, the sun was beginning to rise. Cautiously, the humans entered a mineshaft, which led to the base.
Rick pulled the ODST sergeant to one side, "Me and my team will capture the Control Room, your men should split up and capture the armory and the power plant."
The soldier nodded and his soldiers moved off. Before they set off, the Spartans checked their weapons. Rick shouldered his rifle and the other Spartans followed him.
Surprisingly the base was practically empty, the Spartans observed small groups of jackals and grunts, but no real opposition. As they turned the corner, Rick practically bumped into an elite. The warrior snarled and swung his plasma rifle like a club, Rick rolled out of the way, firing his weapon. The elite's shield collapsed and a bullet penetrated its armor, piercing its shoulder. Then the elite fled, firing its weapon at his pursuers. Vincent aimed at the elite and fired a single burst, the alien crumpled onto the floor.
The Spartans encountered several more Elites and other enemies but they had reached the control room unscathed. Rick gestured at the door, "Mary, open it up."
Mary pulled an anti-tank mine out of her pack and attached to the door. The Spartans retreated down the corridor; there was a deafening explosion and the door was blown into fragments. The Spartans crouched behind crates, expecting resistance. A white armored elite exited the room, he pointed at the Spartans, and "The Prophets will reward those who slay the Demons!" A horde of Covenant soldiers poured out of the open door. The first rank consisted of grunts; human bullets slaughtered them. Several jackals grouped into a phalanx formation. Rick cursed; their bullets were bouncing off the energy shields.
"Fall back! Go down the corridor!"
Mary turned around, Rick wasn't moving. "Rick, come back! You'll get killed!"
Vincent reloaded, "Mary's right, Rick, you'll die!"
A gold armored elite was now standing in front of the jackals, which stopped firing. The elite parted his mandibles in a smile; Rick tossed his rifle on the ground and pulled out a shotgun. The elite pulled out an energy sword and charged. Rick sidestepped the elite and fired his shotgun. The elite was knocked forward by the blast, its shield flared and died. But it slashed with the sword, cutting the shotgun in half. The Spartan whipped out his pistol and emptied the clip into the elite's chest. The Covenant warrior collapsed. Rick scooped up the energy sword and leaped at the covenant soldiers. Mary and Vincent watched in awe for several seconds as Rick slaughtered the jackals and leaped at the elites. Both Spartans ran to their comrade's aide.
Rick had cut a path through the elites and was standing in front of the white armored elite.
"Your death will be a great honor to my name, demon." Then the elite entered a fighting stance and attacked.
