It was endless. The death. Their blood, mixed with his. The chief had been fighting nonstop for hours. His squad of helljumpers dead a long way back- the victims of a Covenant ambush. His suit, once an olive green, was stained with the blood of his enemies and allies alike. He rounded a corner and for once found a hall devoid of enemies. He paused to rest. He checked his weapons. He had a frag grenade three clips for his pistol and two magazines for his battle rifle. "Warning, movement detected" were the only words out of Cortana, she had been quiet ever since her extraction for the second Halos core. Before the chief could react a battalion of elites decloaked before his eyes only to be followed by hundreds of grunts and three pairs of hunters. The lead elite, clad in shimmering black armor warbled to his troops. The chief's suit translation software quickly translated, "... there the One Human, we have him trapped, KILL HIM!" Within seconds, the horde fired upon him. His shields fell as he dove for cover. Grunts flooded to flank him, only to be met by his remaining grenade. The enemy advance was halted, and realizing that they could not flush him out resorted to trying to blow him up. The Chief ran as plasma grenades rained from the sky. He was not fast enough- one stuck to his arm... and detonated three seconds later. His armor held... barely. However, the electrical aftershock of the detonation penetrated his suit and his heart stopped. The Chief fell. Realizing what had just happened, Cortana snapped out of her trance. She needed to do something to save the chief and herself. A countdown timer flashed in her mind, 30...29...28..., the seconds the chief's brain could live after the heart stopped. Almost panicking, she came up with an idea; quickly she compressed all her data on the second halo and shoved herself into the chief's brain.
He was floating; a soft white light surrounded him. Bursts of his life flashed before his eyes: Mendez, Keyes, Dr. Halsey, Sam, Fred, Kelly. He relived his life in a matter of seconds, the first Halo, the Covenant, and the Flood. He knew he was dying, and for the first time in his life, he was not willing to accept. Soon the milky light began to fade and was replaced by the blue metal of the second halo, and the covenant.
"Chief, thank God I could bring you back, I stimulated your heart and you should heal fully." Cortana's voice was welcome. However, the usual numb feeling of her presence was gone, replaced by a sharp clarity of the world around him. " I have managed to insert myself into your brain, I can now monitor and regulate your body functions, as well as process all incoming stimuli faster than your low nerves can." The chief did not exactly enjoy having Cortana in control of his nervous system, but the horde of Covenant troops needed to be taken care of first. Noticing that the One Human was again alive, the Covenant troops opened fire. He saw the incoming plasma, but it seemed to be moving slow. He easily moved out of the way of the bolts, dodged them as if they were standing still. He moved his way toward the horde, which also seemed to be moving slow. An elite tried to hit the chief with his rifle, but the chief moved out of the way and crushed the elite's skull. "Ah, it works." Cortana stated. "What works?" "My presence in your mind has sped up the rate at which you can process sensory information, you now move faster than any human does or Spartan can."
The chief/Cortana easily evaded the attacks of the Covenant troops. He was even to duck under a Hunter's shield and sever its spine with a punch to its unarmored midsection; all before the alien could bring his shield back down. The chief made his way to his battle rifle, picked it up, checked it, loaded it, and slaughtered them all.
He finally made it back to his pelican. HE climbed in and prepared to fly his way down to thew second halos reactors-so as to destroy this halo. In midair he was ambushed by a squadron of seraph fighters. Cortana, once again lost in the information of the second ring was oblivious to the situation. Without her help he was unable to escape the fighters and crashed into a frozen cliff wall. The only thing to escape the crash was a battered green helmet that was to lay in the ice packed canyon forever.
