Date: May 30th, 2525 Location: Unknown Active Spartans: John, Kelly, Sam, Linda, Fred, Joseph, Sara, Jenny, Kerri, Brandon
John was crouched low under the jungle canopy, sweeping his MA5B assault rifle back and forth looking for any signs of movement. He heard Kelly long before he could see her. Though light on her feet, the Spartans enhancements allowed John to hear her footsteps from 400 meters away, and he knew only she could produce footsteps that fast. She was the fastest Spartan, and thus the best scout in UNSC. She was great at picking out Mendez's little "presents" and enjoyed testing out traps long before the rest of the Spartans arrived.
"Report." Snapped John who had only seen her for a split second before she was by his side.
"Mendez set up a pretty nice playground for us," she whispered back. "Stun mines, ODSTs, collapsing bridges, automatic sentries. You know the usual."
"Is that it?" Questioned John. He was curious, this didn't sound like Mendez at all.
"Oh and the bases walls are right in the sentries line of fire."
"How high?"
"Maybe four, five meters tops."
"That's nothing," laughed Sam, while flexing his biceps, "Mendez still under estimates the strength of these enhancements."
"Stow it Spartan." John snapped. While the enhancements greatly increased the Spartans combat prowess, they came with a cost. It had almost been 3 months since the Spartans where strapped down, poked, prodded and injected with any number of chemicals to increase their strength, speed, reaction time, and all other manners of their physical bodies. While John trusted the UNSC had its reasons for putting them through it, he still dwelled on one thing, were the lives of the Spartans that didn't survive spent or wasted.
John quickly pushed these thoughts to the back of his head and began to focus on the task at hand. It was a ordinary games of capture the flag. Get past the open field with who knows how many traps. Get over the base's wall, neutralize any threat, find the flag, and return to the LZ.
He looked up to the sky and noticed the cloud cover. It was about to rain and that made John anxious. He now had to make a very important decision very fast. If they left now, they would be less likely to trip any mines that happened to be lying in wait for them, and would also give them a much better field of vision, add that to the motion sensors recently installed in their stolen helmets, and any attempt to ambush them became useless. On the other hand, the rain would make them a difficult target for the sentries to track but their motion sensors would be useless and visibility would be greatly reduced. He would have preferred the rain but there was no telling when it would start to fall and if for some reason they were attacked while hiding in the jungle, and it began to rain, retreat would be a very difficult option to carry out.
The Spartans had been dropped in five days earlier and had only been told that there was a flag somewhere within an 80 Km radius of the landing zone, and they were to return to the LZ with it. They were given two smoke signals, a blue one to show completion of the mission, which could only be dropped at the LZ, and red one for emergency evac. John had left the red signal at LZ telling himself that if they needed emergency evac, something was horribly wrong. They spent three days mapping out the area, looking out for points of ambush and supplies.
On the second day, John and Linda had run into a few ODSTs. Upon seeing the Spartans, the ODSTs immediately opened fire. John and Linda quickly found cover, and began to move towards them through the foliage. The ODSTs moved into a makeshift V formation and laid down suppression fire. As they moved closer John was able to move down the left flank of the formation and was sneak up behind them. Obviously unaware that only one of the Spartans had move out of their field of vision, and continued to fire at Linda while John approached the first ODST. John had slid up to the inside of the on the soldier's right side and struck him on the side of his helmet with an open palm. The helmet cracked and the solider went down hard. He quickly moved to scoop up the weapon just as the rest of the soldiers realized he was there and let loose a barrage of bullets where he had been only a second ago. He rolled behind a tree as bullets rained down upon him. When he was first noticed, all but 2 of the ODSTs turned to unload on him. John had at first given them credit not to forget about the other Spartan when everyone else had turned to fire at John. However, the lure of an actual target compared to suppression fire finally made them turn their backs to Linda. As soon as they did, Linda was on top of them. She kicked the head of the V in the back, breaking his armor and rupturing internal organs, spun, and caught the next ODST with a punch to the midsection. The trooper immediately keeled over and coughed up blood. Of the three remaining soldiers, two turned to face Linda. She nimbly dogged the shots and moved behind a rock for cover. John quickly checked the magazine on the assault rifle, and noticed that they were stun rounds. This was good. The normal human would go down if one of these rounds struck them in a vital area, unconscious for hours. John had been shot with these many times and knew he could take three or four to the chest before he went down. When there was a pause in the shots in his direction he jumped from behind the tree, and slammed his rifle butt into the stomach of the nearest ODST. The trooper bent over and John then slammed the rifle into his chin. John heard the trooper's jaw break as he sent him eight feet into the air. The remaining two soldiers were quickly dispatched with two quick three round burst to the back. The ODSTs were rounded up and sent back to the LZ where they were interrogated and were stripped of the equipment.
Through the interrogation, the Spartans were able to find the location of the base and were now on the outskirts of the Jungle preparing to move...
