The other part III was a rough draft of the final version, which this one is. I hope you enjoy. Shawn woke up and Boris was at the computer. Shawn walked to the computer and looked at what Boris was looking at. They both were astonished, there were around twenty ODST signatures heading their way. "Well lets me them" Boris said picking up his rockets. Shawn grabbed his MA5C assault rifle and followed him out. Outside they saw in the distance the twenty troopers they saw on the radar. One had a portable scanner, probably checking for survivors. Shawn and Boris ran up and met the group. When they got there the group almost completely ignored them, the one with the scanner said "Looks like we found them, you five help them get their any equipment." The rest continued after they reached Shawn's setup. One of the troopers assigned to help carry the equipment said "You have anything of use in battle?" Shawn and Boris lead them to their stock of explosive devices and they all carried it out. One trooper waited outside then lead them in the tracks of the others. Shawn asked the lead where they were going and he said "The center of the city, that's where everyone is. It started with only around thirty guys were there. Then they contacted a frigate hiding nearby and using their scanners found everyone. What's amazing is all the thirty had was COMs but somehow still managed to lock on the frigate's signature." Shawn was wondering how many there were together, but he'd find out soon enough.
They reached a large building, the entire base was filled with ODST soldiers carrying and sorting supplies. One level higher up there was troopers with battle rifles looking around and patrolling. Boris noticed at around the sixth level were snipers, or something long barreled. Inside there was one ODST giving orders, his helmet was off. His face was rough and had pale white hair around his entire face. His eyes were golden, combined with his hair he glowed. It made him look less old, and he looked to be around his fifties. He saw the group and said "Greetings, sorry it took so long to reach you, had to go to the bigger pockets of soldiers first." Boris said "understandable, what's this whole operation about?" The commander replied "We're going to kick the brutes out; they already pulled out but are coming back. Think they realized street fighting wasn't their style."
The commander lead Shawn and Boris up a stair case, they reached the seventh level and there were ten snipers looking out. There also were missile pods watching the horizon. The commander sat at a desk and said into a microphone "Commander Gordon reporting in, Shadow you read?" There was a pause then "This is Shadow, what's the status of your mission?" Gordon said "Everyone is here, counting seventy five. We suggest you lift off, won't take long for the brutes to notice where we are." "Copy that Commander we'll be able to provide air support in twenty minutes." "Roger" and with that Gordon turned the microphone off. Gordon said to Shawn and Boris "What are your specialties" After they told him Gordon assigned Boris to base level defense, and Shawn to second level. After two hours the crates and boxes of supplies were moved to a sub level, only accessible from the base level. Boris grabbed a MA5B assault rifle, an older version but would be good for laying heavy fire down. He also clipped a M7 to his leg plate, just in case. Shawn picked a BR55 battle rifle and took point with two other ODST troopers on the second floor. Other Troopers set down Boris' C4s and other explosives down as they prepared for the fight. The explosives were placed around the base level so when they pulled back into the building they could block the Brutes off.
Everyone was obviously tired and nervous. The Brutes were obviously going to bring in endless waves of soldiers to combat the troopers. Each one had enough experience to know they weren't going to make it out alive. Many troopers sat in groups and prayed together hopping for the best, others made sure they were in the best spot possible. A hand full wrote letters to family and stuffed them inside their armor; hoping marines might come in and take the letters for them. Shawn sat down in one of the groups praying, to reflect on his life and ask to be forgiven for whatever he has done wrong. Boris stood with the group he was assigned to; there they set themselves up and waited. Gordon was with the snipers, making sure they were prepared.
Shawn talked with one of the troopers in the group, his name was Joseph. His first mission was in a fight with Covenant in space, he repelled forces trying to take his ship. He was only twenty five, at the time of his first mission he just came out of training. Even though this was his second fight he was sure the Covenant would be relentless, but he tried hard to be optimistic. He pointed out how others there had years of experience under their belt and would help them survive, and Shawn wished he could believe him. Looking at Boris, Shawn noticed how he intently he stared at the empty ruins of New Mombasa in front of them, fingers tightly packed in fists.
Boris had talked to a soldier who wrote to his family, they were currently hiding in the military base somewhere in Africa. The trooper's name was Kevin, he was thirty two and had two kids. He told Boris that he would be proud to fight and die today, for he knew he set a perfect role model for his kids. Kevin was kind but stern when needed, and caring for every human he got the privilege to meet. Boris asked Kevin what he wrote to his wife, then Kevin said "My wife died on Reach during my training, I tried to get to her but some high ranking officers dragged me away." Boris could tell by his voice he was deeply saddened and left the conversation drop. Boris now had someone else to keep fighting for.
As Gordon went to the base level with a turret everyone heard the sounds of marching. Shawn and the group he was with took up point, Boris braced himself, and Gordon put his turret down on a tri-pod and waited. It wasn't long until the first wave was visible. Mostly grunts were in it, Brutes were in the back and a few jackals with shields were in between the grunts to act as cover. Gordon wound his turret up, and as soon as the first bullet flew out, everyone started firing. Using rubble as cover the ODST forces engaged in battle with the Covenant forces. Shawn fired at the closer grunts and was careful to use only the necessary number of rounds. Gordon's heavy layer of fire was knocking the grunts down left and right, tearing limbs from corpses. Snipers picked off jackals sending heads flying and knocked down brutes as they gave orders. Early on grunts began to panic, seeing so many of their comrades tore to bits. With Brute and jackal heads dropping to the floor, bodies following, many grunts began to flee. After tearing a squad of six grunts apart Gordon's turret began clicking, he was out of ammo. He took his assault rifle and got up into the battle with everyone else.
A sniper noticed something in the sky and contacted Gordon "sir, I think phantoms are inbound." Gordon looked up and saw one. "Copy, tell the missile pods to open up." The sniper gave a hand signal and the ODST's carrying the pods fired at the phantoms. Only a few were destroyed, others dropped off reinforcements and left. Worse yet chieftains appeared on the field carrying plasma turrets. Now spikes and plasma bolts covered the base level soldiers, no one could fire. Ten ODST took some heavy hits and were dragged to the sub level by five medics. Others who weren't hit as bad kept fighting, and the four that died were left where they lay. Shawn and Joe saw the intensity of the fire, and that grunts would pull out grenades soon and destroy the mines set under them. Joe shouted to Shawn over the racket of firing "Help me take down grenadiers as they pop up! We might be able to turn the tide yet!" "If we get others with their grenades that is!" "I'm sure we can" Joe sounded very optimistic and sure, and for a moment, Shawn believed he was right. Carefully watching Shawn and Joe tore arms holding grenades off grunts, ripped methane tanks off the grunts backs as well. Grunts without their tanks lost breathing control, hyperventilated and died with grenades in hand. It wasn't too long until a Chieftain noticed the two and ordered jackals with carbines to fire upon them. Shawn and Joe took a hit but it was their armor plates so it wasn't as bad. They got back up and refocused on the jackals.
By now the base floor troopers were able to return fire and pushed advancing grenadiers back. Boris and Kevin were behind a giant boulder firing intensely upon the grunt fodder. Boris' MA5C fire was effective but since it was an older model he didn't have too much ammo. After three clips he ran out and had to pull out his submachine gun. After the grunts were pushed back, Kevin started to fire at a Brute Chieftain. The Chieftain's elegant armor repelled the bullets as if they were pesky flies and the Chieftain turned his head slightly toward them. Boris also began to fire on the Chieftain, and in a rage the Chieftain ran toward them. Alone they didn't have nearly early fire power to bring down such a monster, and the Chieftain laughed as he got closer and closer. An ODST on the second floor saw the Chieftain, and since he was out of ammo he jumped down on top of the Brute's back. The Brute's charge was merely stuttered, that was until the ODST grabbed the Chieftain's heel. The ODST were made to absorb shock and that's just what this one did, and because he did he saved Boris, Kevin and four others at the boulder. Even more enraged the Chieftain picked up and threw the trooper. Boris and Kevin unleashed one last round that tore through the weakened back armor and distorted the Chueftain's back. The Brute wasn't done though and charged again, but in the charge he fell on an electrical cord and was zapped. The Brute Chieftain was finally dead, but there was still more.
Gordon's fight against these forces wasn't as pleasant as Shawn's or Boris'. Gordon's cover was decimated when the phantoms came in and they rained a quick shower of bolts at his position. His squad was ok but now they were immobile, pinned and cut off. Gordon took every opening he could and managed to take a jackal and two grunts. Fire began to slow on his side as the grunts with grenades got picked off and the Chieftain's death demoralized many grunts and jackals. Taking the opportunity he got his squad back to the main group, though one trooper took a spike into the side. Gordon dragged the trooper to cover as he intensely bleed, but he also continued to fire. The trooper being dragged was giving it all he could. When the medics got him they weren't sure he'd make it, but Gordon believed he would and gave the dying man hope to live on. They carried him to the medic center downstairs, and when Gordon turned around he saw a bright green light. A large plasma blast swept across the upper floors, and the rubble crashed all the way to the third floor. The Covenant just broke out a Scarab. The snipers saw the blast coming and made for the stairwell, but as the told Gordon over the coms, they were trapped.
Gordon issued a full out retreat and told the frigate helping them to fire on the Scarab. "Sorry Gordon, we are in a battle with Covenant ships. UNSC ships were already fighting, we had to join." Gordon watched the Scarab gloom over the advancing Covenant forces, like a giant guardian ensuring his people a victory, retreating ODST's getting shot down with their comrades dragging them away. "Sorry? That won't cut it" and Gordon ran in front of the fire and sprayed the enemy down. He gave the troopers enough cover so they could escape. The surviving forty eight troopers moved and blockaded the staircase to the second floor. There they waited, then a large fodder force of grunts and jackals moved in. When they took up over half of the lobby area Gordon detonated the explosives they placed, the base floor engulfed in a flame eating everything and the front side of the building collapsed forward down on the Covenant forces. The floor was drenched in blood and much of the second floor and stairs were covered in blood as well.
Rubble blocked off the Covenant's only entrance and the troopers cheered. Suddenly there was a rumble, and most of area shock. Shawn looked carefully at a center boulder, and again the rumble was felt, and the boulder also budged. On the third strike the boulder exploded and a fist could be seen. A Brute Chieftain emerged and removed the other rocks. Four Hunters also broke through the rubble, hordes of soldiers behind them. The ODST's opened a relentless barrage of fire down on the Covenant, but the Hunters and a large number of jackals repelled the shots. The forces advanced up the stairs and fired upon the ODST, desperately trying to repel them. Shawn and Joe grabbed a crate of fragmental and tossed them one by one, active, down on the enemy. The grenades knocked the Hunters around, and killed soldiers directly behind them. When a Hunter's worms were exposed the ODSTs jumped on it. They managed to kill one after five grenades but it wasn't good enough.
When all the grenades were gone only another Hunter was killed, with only the worm's hollow armor left. The Covenant forces still were pushing their attack, and now only thirty ODSTs were left, the others were dead or wounded. The moral was low; the end of the waves was visible but not a possible goal. Then as the Hunters were almost point blank range a large green laser scorched the Hunters along with the rest of the line. Brutes in the back rushed outside to find out what this new threat was. When they were outside the ODST could hear the Brute's battle cries and many explosions. Gordon heard over his com the captain of the frigate. The captain of the frigate responded gleefully "Looks like we've done it Gordon! We took the brutes by surprise up here when we came up and crushed them with only two ships being lost. Looks like you managed to hack the Scarab they deployed and turn the tide!" Gordon was confused, but responded "Come pick us up in three hours, we'll need time to recover bodies and items on their body." Gordon and the others walked outside, Brute's were burning, the ground was caved in, and blood was everywhere. The Scarab was staring at the troopers, and then a very robotic voice said "Congratulations." The Scarab went into self destruct and blew up, metal flew everywhere.
Shawn looked through the remaining troops for Boris, Joe and Kevin were following him. Joe struggled along, for his armor plates took direct plasma bolts, and Kevin had a spike in his right arm. Shawn, who was still sore from his fist fight two days ago, was missing his left shoulder plates, they were hit clean off. They found Boris, dying under three rocks that the Hunters blew up. The three ODST's took the rocks off Boris, his bones broken, flesh torn. Concerned Shawn and Kevin took Boris to the medics and Joe told Gordon. Three hours came to pass, wounded could walk to pelicans now to leave the place; those who couldn't walk still were carried in. Marines now were on the ground helping pack crates and store weapons. Kevin and Joe left early on one of the pelicans wanting to leave the disaster behind. Shawn stayed a little later, needing to drop of something. Letters and dog tags were recovered from bodies and Shawn passed to a Marine collecting them a letter and dog tag. The dog tag was bloody and you couldn't read it, and the letter was also blooded. On the front fold you could clearly see the name and homeworld of the writer, as well as his last will. Boris, Born on Reach, To be buried with his childern on Reach.
