(It has been a while since i made a story on here. Hop-e people like it.)
A loud bang followed by a deadly silence. This mixed with a bright flash and all doubt was gone, something large had just exploded. A mushroom of smoke rose up into the sky not to far away, a wind filled with dust made a sweep through the base. Alarms where going off and everybody got to their post. There had been trainings, would they turn out to be worth it?
"I repeat, this is not a drill, not a drill, everybody to their stations immediately." A voice said loud and clear trough speakers all over the base. More explosions occurred, these where a bit closer but of a smaller size. Marines, engineers, pilots, tech support, the base was crawling like an ant heap but no sign of the enemy yet, not inside the base at least.
Amongst the people in the ant heap swarmed a marine known as Kazama. Kazama had already received a medal for bravery and excellent skills in another conflict. He requested to board a battle cruiser destined for known covenant space, instead they made him relax a bit in a behind safe lines base with a M8O8V scorpion tank production line facility. Turned out to be a pretty good spot for combat as the Covenant blasted their way trough the front lines like speeding passed a stop sign, passing by with some projectiles coming at you.
"Kazama!" Shouted a passer by halting upon a glimpse of his hero. "Thank god man, i have to be on your squad man." Said the rookie marine with rare determination. Kazama, who had stopped upon the echo of his name trough the war zone yet to be looked back at the kid who seemed like he did not want to die in this mess.
"Don't expect me to break my neck for you, but i do tend to be heroic in the savior of my squad's lives." He replied with a tone like he looked down upon the kid. "What's your name kid?"
"They call me Scout." He tried to say proudly. "I wonder why though." He continued with a made questioning in his voice.
"Great, another desperate survivor on my team."
They made way for Kazama's defense point, a near impenetrable solid plate as a shield with a turret pointing trough the open slice in the middle in the center of low wall good for cover. This obviously within the 'safety' of a fence that seemed to have already been blown open. In fact enemies where already in sight and returning fire at the turret. On the left side of the turret behind the low wall lay a man bleeding from somewhere on his torso, his whole vest under the blood, the ground also pretty much. Kazama made a extra sprint to the man and sat down besides the injured man.
"Gosip! Hang in there man." He said with a worried voice. "Why the hell is Gosip hit?" He asked loudly enough for most to hear. The crew already there mostly where to busy holding off the enemy but one marine sat down on the other side of the wounded marine.
"They got a lucky shot at him, he said he'd be fine, we called for a medic and his injury does not seem to bad." The man said, showing disbelieve of his own words upon the sight of the blood the injured man had already spilled. Out of the blue another marine sat down at the injured marine.
"Give me some room." The guy, Kazama now recognized as a medic said to him and the other man sitting at the injured marine.
"Gosip, just hang in there man." Kazama said while standing up. He looked around, it felt like he was missing something, than he realized what it was.
"Get the hell down on your knees, do you want to get shot rookie?" He shouted at Scout who seemed out of the field by the immense amount of blood in front of him. He was just standing there, right in the open staring at the blood and the white cross on the suit of the medic. He blinked upon Kazama's shouting but seemed to tribute no other reaction to Kazama's effort of saving him. Than a blue orb rushed passed him and he seemed to have snapped out of it. Looking around he paid one last stare at the blood scene and hit the dirt upon realising he was wide open.
A scream of pain sounded from the turret's direction and Kazama saw the gunner going down. Though screaming means a wound it also means life, the gunner had not been killed at least. Kazama went over to the turret and while he wanted nothing more than to try and help the wounded gunner he had to replace him at the turret.
"Cage, hold on man, we already have a medic at the scene you are in good hands." He ensured him before making haste to the turret and grabbing it's bicycle type steering wheel. Overlooking an open field he could see brutes and grunts and energy shields and Covenant vehicles and had he not dodged a plasma bolt a beam of other plasma would have hit him, jackals seemed to be also on the scene. He got back straight and opened fire on the scum brute closest by. Bullets seemed to run in a straight line over the ground toward the brute, low ranked, not too impressive head dress but a pretty fast firing weapon. The last bullet hit not a meter from the brutes feet before they made a circle over the brutes chest. Shaking his shoulders front and back the brute fell onto its knees and from there on his back, his weapon over dramatic in a lose grip of his left hand, both arms spread to their sides. Blood made a turtle phase down his arms and onto the weapon.
Kazama had already slaughtered a group of A, brave, B, forced cowards or C, very fooling grunts that made it all the way to only a meter behind the fallen brute and gauss leaked from one of the gauss tanks after falling onto a sharp rock. A plasma bolt raged from all the way at the back into the invisible cloud of gauss and detonated it. The shock wave blew Kazama off his feet and onto his back, slamming his head into the ground. For a moment he was out of it, then a over dramatic 'No' was shouted toward him, it sounded like he was under water but than again the plasma bolt he noticed whooshing over him seemed to go in slow frames. Someone sat down besides him and put his hands on Kazama's chest.
"Are... Aren't you?" The confused Marines rookie called Scout let over his tongue. For a moment the kid was relieved but he got back to reality by the flesh of a exploding plasma grenade.
"Quick, somebody, the turret." He said in panic, wanting nothing more than to stay away from the main attraction for the enemy to take out.
"Get down!" Somebody shouted. Scout needed no second warning and followed the command. Not a second later a spike grenade stuck to the turret exploded and send a inferno a meter into every direction. Scout could feel the heat possessing his back. Then, a moment later it faded again.
"Fall back!" The same voice as last time shouted. A wise choice as they pretty much lost their grip on this spot without a turret. Then Scout realized something, but could it really, he did react rather fast on the orders and they did sound like he had heard them all his life, just never like that before.
"Kazama, get up man, we are falling back to secondary defensive position." Scout said, then he was sure of it, it was the same voice.
Scout pulled Kazama up on his feet, Kazama still seemed half out of it, he just tagged along. They hurries back to another wall, a few inches higher but without any turrets.
"South fence and defensive wall have fallen, requesting backup troops to hold off the enemy at secondary defensive at south wall, over." Scout said trough his headset as he helped Kazama get over the wall. This wall would hold while the first one would not because this one lay just behind a storage room and the group where getting turrets one per marine. The brutes and grunts where dead on schedule as all turrets where set up when they arrived. Suddenly the brutes faced far more than just one deadly turret, he faced a whole bunch of them spread in safe distance of one another placed on top of a good protective wall not so willing to crack easily. Just when they thought to have a safe protection again the worst happened, two banshees appeared in the distance, what worser enemy for a rapid bullet shooter than a turret, pretty strong armoured against such a foe.
"Scout, barrel, you two stay on the ground forces, the rest aim for those banshees at all might." Said Kazama. The leader in Scout had been put to rest for now as the actual leader was back in play. Bolt after bolt made way toward the wall and a larger bolt better known as a fuel rod made its way for the wall just to Scout's right. The gunner went down with heavy burnings and another fuel rod hit the wall further to the right, badly aimed however.
"Don't look now but those banshees are toast." Kazama said as a group of four hornets, UNSC aerial vehicles made for the kill flanked the banshees and opened missiles on them. Most missiles hit and both banshees went up in flames. The hornets turned their attention to the ground and opened fire, terrorizing the Covenant units down below. The troops that made it out alive fell back to the safety of their anti air beyond the reach of the UNSC, they where safe for now, able to get their turrets to the first defensive south wall. Other sides off the base where not so lucky, but on this side they where able to regroup and secure.
