This is the prologue for the fan fiction novel "Halo: The Interplanetary War" I'm working on, which will depict the formation of the UNSC and life on Earth during the 20th, 21st, and 22nd centuries.
HALO: THE INTERPLANETARY WAR
Prologue
Mankind's bloody history has always influenced the way we chance our countless efforts to prosper among the infinite obstacles that step forth to challenge our very existence. We have faced bloodshed, death, loss of people we love and meaningless ideological clashes between our nations. Our lives have been constantly changed by wars we do not understand the purpose of. Perhaps, we will never know the true meaning of war unless we attempt to avoid it. Nevertheless, the incurable wounds our ancestors have let us bare for so many centuries, must change the way we perceive our place in this ever-growing habitat we call the "universe". We are but a mere fraction of the true dangers that lay ahead of our journey. "Wake up, and smell the flowers while you still can!".
1945 - 2000
The year 1945 saw the end of an extremely chaotic and brutal period of the twentieth century. The Second World War - the greatest war in the history of armed conflicts - ended through an impressive allied counter-offensive upon German-held Europe. On the 24th of October, 1945, the global peacekeeping organization called the "United Nations" - abbreviated "UN" - is formed as a result of a world-wide collaboration between the Allied Nations during World War II. Starting from 1948, the UN had constantly organized various peace-keeping missions and operations across the world, destined to put down rebel resistances and maintain peace and order. By the end of the 20th Century, basically all self-contained nations on Earth became members of the United Nations.
However, the Second World War was not the only armed conflict that took place during the twentieth century. The United States and the Soviet Union were the two main tension factors that fed the increasing fear of Nuclear War. In the 1960's, United States marine deployments in Vietnam, Central Africa and Middle Eastern nations initiated a series of violent conflicts between peacekeeping forces and indigenous populations.
In 1957, the first orbital exploration satellite, the "Sputnik", was launched by the Soviet Union, marking the beginning of the Space Age.
By the late 1980's and early 1990's, computer and Artificial Intelligence technology had evolved to the point where computer knowledge was necessary to conduct several technological research and development activities. Soon, personal computers became a part of both civilian and military daily life.
2000 - 2100
Following the series of assaults on the United States of America on the 11th of September, 2001, massive build-ups of joint US and Great Britain military forces had been organized to initiate attacks on rebel bases in the middle east and capture the leaders of insurgent groups.
In the year 2014, the first manned expedition to the planet Mars was launched by United States and European governments. Ten years later, the United Nations Space Committee agreed to begin a full-scale colonization process on Mars. Between 2023 and 2050, more than twenty colony bases on Mars had been constructed, including "Argyre Planitia", "New Legaspi", "Hellas Planitia", and "Amazonis Planitia". Colonial Administration Laws were introduced by the UN Colonial Administration Authority on the colonies of Mars, in order to maintain a safe level of security.
The first colonial naval base was established by the UN on Mars in the year 2057. The naval base was destined to serve as a UN military naval training facility and was named "New Pearl Harbor" in honor of the US shipyard on Earth. The "New Pearl Harbor" base would be renamed to "Reyes-McLees Shipyards" and re-assigned to serve as a naval construction facility by Dr. Robert McLees, four hundred and fifty three years later, in 2510.
The undeniable success of Martian colonization immediately caught the attention of civilians on Earth. A space exploration program entitled "Astrotour" was initiated by the United Nations Colonial Administration Authority which allowed civilians to explore the confines of the Solar System at a remarkably low cost. In a time span of only a few years, space tourism became the most profitable business activity to date. During the civil space exploration expeditions, the United Nations turned their attention and area of influence towards the planet Venus, the gas giants and Earth's moon.
Despite the UN's high expectations of colonizing Venus, several problems concerning the planet's atmosphere and surface arose. Due to Venus' unstable atmosphere and inhospitable surface, colonization plans had been drastically reduced to a handful of stationary orbital platforms. By the year 2061, Venusian orbital platforms of exceptional importance included the "Aphrodite Alpha", "Aphrodite Beta" and "Maxwell Mountain" stations - the purpose of these platforms was to closely observe disturbances and volcanic eruptions on the surface of the Sun.
In the year 2065, the Unified German Republics transported a great number of colonists to the four Jovian moons: "Io", "Europa", "Ganymede" and "Callisto". The expedition was hosted by the United Nations "Astrotour" program which assisted the UGR in setting up civil and military bases on "Europa", "Ganymede" and "Callisto".
The increasing number of colonial territories the UN was disposing of, required a formal package of laws and attributions the colonists would be obliged to respect and exert on their colony worlds. The signing of the "United Nations Treaty for Outer Space" marked the first official declaration of peace and order among the various colonies of the solar system.
As permanent colonization of the solar system expanded its frontiers, life on the mother planet was suffering an unanticipated turn of events. Global Warming presented the most severe and menacing threat for the inhabitants of Earth. Countless floods, earthquakes, hurricanes and "tsunamis" began tearing apart entire continental cities and agricultural regions, which lead to crops being drowned. The severity of this situation called for immediate resolving, due to population growth. The cities on Earth were being extremely overcrowded by large amounts of immigrants.
During a period of over twenty years - from 2070 to 2092 - unprecedented famines took place among most of the independent nations of Earth. After a series of intense discussions between multi-national governments, it had been decided that in order to counter the threat of the increasingly violent mother nature, all sea-open nations would have to build up a network of massive dikes and water-blocks along the widespread sea sides. This drastic measure of defense managed to successfully protect cities and country sides from raging floods that followed.
2100 - 2160
During the first half of the twenty second century, the United Nations military forces - marine infantry in particular - had been subjected to very harsh and rough training exercises on the Jovian moon of "Europa" and the newly established "Richard Montgomery" training camp on the former Canadian territory of Earth.
The UN Naval Command Force began placing new generation destroyer warships in formation above the orbit of Earth, in an attempt to provide limited security for major cities in case pirate ships approach the proximity of UN Navy controlled space.
Tensions began mounting on Earth and in the Jovian moon colonies as a result of the steadily unsatisfying laws the UN Council was imposing. Starting from 2152, certain Russian separatist groups began protesting against the English-American globalization effects the UN was implementing among its member nations. By the year 2154, all Russian insurgent groups agreed to unify and organize their forces against the United Nations under one leader, Vladimir Koslov, a forty year old former Russian navy commanding officer. The Russian rebels entitled themselves the "Koslovics", and strongly believed that communism represented the best way to avert UN English capitalist governing. The United Nations Council on Peacekeeping immediately declared a state of "Second Degree Integrity Emergency" and began monitoring the neo-communist rebel activity.
The Koslovic uprising was also being heard in outer space on the Jovian moon colonies. Unified German Republics colonists on the Jovian moons became increasingly hostile towards the Koslovic movement on Earth and the UN's unsatisfying actions to prevent the rapid spread of this neo-communist faction. Before the United Nations was even aware of it, a second rebel uprising took place on Jupiter's moons. Apparently this particular insurgent movement called themselves the "Frieden" - meaning "peace" in the German language - consisting primarily of Unified German Republics colonists. The Frieden rebels believed that by eliminating the opposing forces on Earth - the UN and the Koslovics - peace could be achieved throughout the Jovian colonies.
