Dr. Jeremy Watson stepped out from his house to start his walk to work, thinking to himself I can't believe that our worst enemy is now our ally. It has only been a year after the war ended, but Watson's most important job was to learn the technology from the Elites to better defend themselves if one of the rouge Elite groups attempt to attack. Not only is that but the Brutes still out there as well. All the Covenant species are not dead, but just driven out from this galaxy. The Elites have been kind enough to watch any aggressive action by the other species, they didn't want to bring them all to extension, but give them a seconded chance. However, trying to convince the Elites to destroy them was a problem. Because of out two different personality and political parties that almost came to an act of war and no peace treaty, humanly couldn't handle another war, so we kept to there plan. We still don't trust them but do need them to give us support in space security.
Even though the Elites are now on Earth, Watson trusted them even more than anyone. He can't for sure why, but he knows that they will respect any humans choice. And so far they have keep to the treaty rules. Seeing how they handle military and political issues, he invited an Elite by the name of Anog 'Nilalee. Watson needed an alien assistant to help him understand the technology they have lended him. Knowing 'Nilalee for over nine months, he trusted him more than anyone. Watson never had a relationship, but only friends. Growing up while hearing human populated planets being destroyed tore him apart. Thinking if he ever married or had a personal relationship with someone, and the Covenant came by to destroy Earth, he didn't want to see his loved ones die, of having them see him die.
'Nilalee was an expert in mathematics and science technology, and also holding an impressive service record with gold armour. Watson looked at all the available files of alien assistant's. But 'Nilalee had more than an impressive record of being top in his class, but he survived a crash landing. After the crash landing, 'Nilalee was put into jail under the charges of being a trader. Why? How he survived was not because he was in a lucky position to crawl out of, but by the help of a human. 'Nilalee never knew his name, but knew the man saved his life to try to change the war. That is why Watson wanted him as an assistant. He trusted a human in the war, and he knew he would trust them even more now.
Watson walked up to the door of his work building, having his blood tested and ID checked we walked in. Taking off his coat, a voice startled him from behind.
"Your late."
Watson turned around to see 'Nilalee standing there.
"I told you to stop doing that!"
'Nilalee just stood there, "Come!"
Watson followed as he entered the lab. In the middle of the room was what looked like a large purple rock.
"You think I was late! That's late. We ordered it over three months ago."
"Ha, I suppose your right. Remember we are to still trying to recover from this war." 'Nilalee replied
"Ok lets crack this open." Watson said as he grabbed some Covenant tools and stood in front of the device. "Ah. A Covenant hyper drive. Been waiting forever to touch one of these"
"There," 'Nilalee said as he pointed to a hole in the hyper drive.
Watson took the fork looking tool and stuck it into the hole. The door popped open. Watson took the door as it leaded toward him. Lifting it off its place he leaned the heavy door against the table behind him. The compartment inside was filled with a gel.
"That is what keeping the radiation from leaking out."
"We can remove it right?" Watson asked.
"As long as its not active"
Watson took a tube and a bucked, reaching his hands inside and pulling out the gel around the core and dumping it into the bucket, and sucking up any leftovers with the hose. These hyper drives was very important for Watson to study. The UNSC needed a better hyper drive than they do now, it would take the UNSC months to reach the nearest habituated planet, while it only took the Covenant weeks. Watson already accomplished Shields and power sources.
"Did they say this drive was damaged?" Watson asked.
"The ship has been in many battles, they couldn't find anything wrong with the drive."
"Good, I don't want radioactive hands."
Watson cleared the compartment of the gel. Now to do what he wanted, remove the core of the drive. He reached his hands inside the compartment and grabbed a large tube, twisted it but it didn't come out.
"It won't come out."
"Pull harder."
"I am."
Watson let go and had 'Nilalee give it a try.
"Our technology was designed for our strength" 'Nilalee said as he pulled the core out with a clunk. "Ah, there you go."
"Thank you," Watson replied as 'Nilalee handed the core to him. He set it down on the counter next to the drive.
"So small yet very you need something huge to keep it under control. Readings say it's almost dead. How old was the ship?"
"Two hundred and three of your Earth years."
"What's the maximum life of a hyper drive?"
"One hundred and eighty years"
"wow, a bit over used don't you think."
"Once a ship has lost its life, we use them as defensive porpoise's"
"Ok, Can you go get my bag? My clamp is in it."
'Nilalee left to grab the bag. Watson trusted 'Nilalee so much they shared memories together. Only as a friend he would never engage as a personal relation with an elite. 'Nilalee never had a family of what he knew of, but he did know he did once have a lover on Sangheilos, but that was long ago. Elites lived long lives. Humans lived for about an average of 85 years, Elites lived for an average of 130 years.
'Nilalee will out live Watson by 10 years. He was only in his mid 30's 'Nilalee was about 60 years old. Now that the war was over he wanted to start a relationship.
He started to peal off the layers of skin on the core as 'Nilalee paused at the door of the lab.
"Watson! Stop!"
Watson looked up at the monitor and saw the radiation start to rise.
"The core may be inactive but troughs layers keep the radiation from leaking when inactive."
Watson started to put the layers back, he felt dizzy but could see the levels dropping. The radiation levels that leaked wasn't much, only by a little bit to kill him in 60 years. But now he hoped that he would die before that will kill him. Slowly threw his life he would start getting sicker and toward the end he would be in a wheelchair for the radiation would start to decay his body while he's still alive. He fell to the floor unconscious.
***
While he was unconscious he could see a vision, being exposed to radiation gave you funny results. He saw Earth on a beautiful day, the sun was bright, then he saw a flash of light in the sky. Covenant weapons, and a super shoulder. The elites betrayed the humans and let a Covenant invasion attack earth. Or was it the Covenant? He saw no Brute weapons. Only blue and purple. The Covenant is going to attack. Paranoid or not he didn't want this to happen, that was why the government wanted him to be involved in this program to prevent this from happening. No this has to be stopped before it happens not after. From what it looked like we where taken by surprise.
He awoke to find himself in a hospital bed and 'Nilalee standing at the door talking to a nurse.
"'Nilalee!" he said, 'Nilalee looked at him and approached, "I need to get out of here."
"You are in no condition to go anywhere."
"No you don't understand! Earth is endanger!"
