Kulma Omloemee crouched behind a stone formation as projectile weapons spat their metallic cylinders at him. Though primitive by his standards, the human weapons could when focused easily overwhelm his shield system and pierce his armor. His small squad of Unggoy cowered at his feet, and Kulma briefly considered picking one of them up and using it as a living shield.
Grinning at the thought, but dismissing it, he growled at the closest Unggoy to him and motioned for a grenade. The diminutive creature pulled one of the faintly glowing blue orbs from his bandolier and handed it to Kulma.
Kulma motioned for the other Unggoy to follow his lead, then primed and lobbed the grenade over the rock formation. The incessant popping noises of the human weaponry abruptly stopped as six grenades landed in their midst. There was one startled cry, then a series of explosions and flashes, as well as a wet splattering sound as the unfortunate recipient of a grenade was liquefied and sprayed in every direction.
Kulma roared in his most fearsome voice and clambered to the top of the formation, holding his plasma rifle in one hand and his powered-down plasma sword in the other. He held down the firing stud and sprayed plasma at the human warriors attempting to regroup.
Suddenly finding bravery, the Unggoy with him scurried out from behind the rock, chattering and snorting like animals, muttering insults at the humans in their own language. One of the small warriors was hit by a human weapon, and the rest scattered as a human grenade landed in their midst.
However, the humans' attention wasn't focused in any one place, and the one human smart enough to try and take a bead on Kulma was cut down by his plasma fire.
Kulma held down the stud on his weapon until it began to glow and the panels on the side extended to vent the excess heat.
The humans began to pull back, firing and reloading, their numbers dwindling rapidly. A few more grenades clinked to a halt at the base of the rock formation, and the Unggoy retreated behind it.
They seek to use the smoke and debris as cover.
Kulma wouldn't let them get away.
He dropped his weapon behind him and ignited his plasma sword as the grenades thumped and sent dirt and debris in all directions. As soon as the last grenade went off, Kulma coiled his powerful leg muscles and sprung forward into the human formation.
One of them let out a cry and put himself between Kulma and his comrades. The Sangheili roared at him in open challenge.
The human much to his credit was unafraid and moved to bring his weapon to bear on the much larger alien. But Kulma was ready for it. With his free hand, he grabbed the muzzle of the human weapon and wrenched it from his grip. And as the human stumbled forward trying to maintain his hold on the weapon, that was when Kul;ma thrust his blade forward.
It passed through the skull with the barest whisper of resistance and a small red cloud shrouded Kulma's hand for a moment.
As the body toppled forward, Kulma kicked it hard so it toppled end over end into the other humans, who were also trying to bring their weapons into a good firing position.
The dead weight caused three of the humans to collapse in a mess of limbs and weaponry, and a sharp cry along with a muffled bark of a human weapon meant one of them had panicked and shot his ally. One of the humans backpedaled and managed to avoid the big mess, but tripped on a rock behind him and was also temporarily taken out of the fray.
The one remaining human, though, had rolled to her side and was already on her feet, weapon aimed at Kulma. He darted to one side as she began spraying bullets at him. She roared as fiercely as she could manage, but no human cry could ever match the roar of a battle-frenzied Sangheili.
Kulma turned his circular dash into a headlong charge, surprising the human as he let his energy shields take a few hits. The human attempted to dogde to the side, but a low horizontal cut with his sword sliced the human's legs open and she collapsed.
One of the Unggoy at his back chattered in his own language to scatter, and Kulma dove to one side without thinking.
The plasma grenade hit the corpse of the human Kulma had attacked first and fused to the armor on his chest. Two of the humans clambered away as quickly as they could, one taking a direct hit from a fully charged plasma pistol and collapsing to the floor, his entire spinal cord vaporized, his body dead, but his brain left to wonder what had happened for another moment before it, too, died.
The other human, still slightly pinned underneath the corpse, attempted to roll it over and smother the blast. Unfortunately, in his panic, he ended up placing his hand on the grenade. The grenade fused to the human's hand, and with a curse, both humans disappeared in a flash of brilliant blue-white.
The last human had managed to recover and ignore the fact that all his brethren had just died, and was somehow managing to smile.
Kulma laughed at the human's bravery and motioned for one of the Unggoy to take care of him.
When there was no green flash of a plasma pistol, Kulma turned to yell at one of his minions, and was quite surprised to see a green-armored human standing, rifle in one hand, limp Unggoy corpse in the other.
"Demon!" Kulma leapt backwards as the Demon himself fired at him.
His heart raced. Glory would be his! The Demon dared attack him by himself when Kulma was already in a battle frenzy, had already tasted human blood, and was already prepared for the worst the infidels could throw at him.
Just as Kulma landed and prepared to yell at the Demon to prepare himself, the most peculiar thing happened.
__________
SPARTAN-117 dropped his battle rifle and pulled the pilfered Covenant energy sword from his sidearm holster. The Elite who had managed to take out a squad of marines by himself with, apparently, little more than an energy sword and a couple of Grunts, was spreading his jaw mandibles for a war cry of some kind.
John was tired of their language.
He rushed forward as the blade ignited itself and slashed upward with all of his considerable might.
The instant the energy weapon made contact with the Elite's shields, the shields flared and died, and the sword continued to move forward with John's momentum. The blade ripped in to the Elite's midsection first, devouring his insides with the contained fury of a sun. The blade continued upward and onward, severing the spinal column in to three distinct parts, none of which could function properly.
Finally, the blade passed through the alien skull, and the Master Chief was almost certain, in the one instant before he truly died, that the Elite looked genuinely surprised.
The moment passed, and the lifeless body collapsed to the floor in a bloody mess. John deactivated the blade and shook the ichors from his arm. He looked at the one remaining marine, who smiled and gave him a salute. John allowed himself a smile though the polarized faceplate prevented the marine from seeing it and nodded at the other man.
"Nice one, sir!" The congratulations were short-lived, though, as the whine of more Covenant weapons could be heard just around the corner.
Chief put his hand on the marine's shoulder and nodded again, then picked up his discarded battle rifle, reloaded it, and sprinted for the next engagement.
