this isn't quite finished yet, but let me know if you want me to post the whole thing when i'm done.
"You have been called upon to serve, you will be trained...and you will become the best we can make of you. You will be the Protectors of Earth and all her Colonies"
John-117 surveyed the charred landscape through the scope of his rifle, in hope of finding any life what so ever-he found nothing, he thought back to the events that had led him to this... the fall of the pillar of autumn, the destruction of the halo rings, defeating the covenant, a religiously fanatical cult of aliens who attempted genocide against the human race claiming it was part of some prophecy... and now here he was, lost on an unforgiving planet, light years from earth, trying desperately to survive with his only companion being his SRS99D-S2 AM sniper rifle capable of firing 4 14.5mm x 114mm rounds in 3 seconds, on the field of battle, it was his only friend. Suddenly, a blur whizzed passed his scope, waking him from his daydream, it was too fast to be an animal, too small to be a vehicle, he raised his gun and followed it, finger on trigger... no it couldn't be, could it? He let of 4 high calibres, armour piercing rounds into the shape as it raced towards him, but it was already too late...
A loud siren woke gunnery sergeant Jackson from a troubled sleep, ever since the war on the covenant had ended, he had not had a proper night's sleep, his dreams filled with gunshots, brutish aliens, and screaming- the screaming never stopped... but now he was awake and that siren meant only one thing... Jackson walked up to the monitor showing the tired face of his superior, Commander Lucas Alexander.
"What is sir?" asked Jackson with an air of genuine concern about him, after all, its not every day that you receive a signal from the commander.
"This morning, we received a message from the forward unto dawn, now get dressed and meet me in the com room stat" this was news Jackson had been waiting for since the end of the war on the covenant, they had made contact with the Master Chief, the last of the Spartan II's, genetically engineered super soldiers, they were the best of the best, faster stronger and smarted than any human, but they had all been wiped out in one of the covenants fist assaults on the humans, now only one remained, he had been lost after the destruction of high charity, the covenants holy city, they called it humanities finest hour, but Master Chief had been lost to the stars in the following explosion, but now, they had received a transmission.
Before he knew it, he was in the com room with his elite squad of Orbital Drop Shock Troops,( or ODST's as they were more commonly known) Being briefed by the commander himself.
"Men, this morning as you are aware, we received a transmission from the forward unto dawn, the ship Master Chief was aboard when high charity was destroyed, and he was lost into the abyss, this is the first sign we've gotten of there even being any chance that he is alive, from what we can tell ,this signal was sent nearly 2 years ago, and has only just reached us" he tapped some keys of a nearby keyboard and a holo-screen appeared, showing Cortana, the female AI that was in command of the Dawn when it was lost.
"I don't know if this message will get through to anyone, but if it does, send aid immediately, the Dawn is no longer capable of flight and supplies are almost completely depleted, also there is some strange hostile inhuman life forms here and the master chief has very little capability to fight back as most of our ammunition was expended in the assault on high charity. Our co-ordinates are disclosed." And with that the transmission ended.
"I know it's not much but now we finally know where he is, and if he's still alive we need to bring him back. As for the hostiles Cortana mentioned, you will be equipped with state of the art weaponry and equipment, your orders are to engage all hostiles on site... you hear me marines?"
"HOO RAH!" they cheered in unison resounding throughout the ship.
"Now go get suited up, this aint gonna be a walk in the park."
It felt good for Jackson to be in his old uniform again, the black as night body armour of the ODST's emblazoned with the double-headed eagle of the United Nations Space Command, it made him feel an immense sense of pride to wear this armour, to fight alongside the bravest soldiers humanity had left... he met the other ODST's at the hanger preparing their Human Entry Vehicles (HEV), the HEV's are a tear-drop shaped pod made of Titanium-A, Lead Foil, and a ceramic skin. They are known for their risky use, as they can die either from the intense heat on re-entry, the extreme G-forces, the force of hitting a terrestrial target, or, the parachute may not open to slow the HEV down. This is the main reason why many consider the ODSTs to be "insane". For weaponry, Jackson picked himself up a MA5B Assault rifle, most marines had by know changed to the newer BR55 Battle rifle, for its greater accuracy at range, Jackson had seen marines expend an entire magazine at an enemy and miss with every round, but for Jackson, it wasn't just a gun, it was a link to the past, a reminder of a simpler time, before the covenant, when men fought men and that was enough. Before too long the time had come to jump, Jackson had always hated faster than light travel, it made his stomach turn as it does with most men but he was always affected more by it than the others.
Before he knew it, they were already being loaded into the HEV's ready to be fired at the ground, the ten man squad were all nervous, if Cortana was right, which she always is, that the master chief wouldn't stand a chance against whatever inhabited the planet, then 10 ODST's wouldn't stand much of a chance either, but Jackson pushed that out of his mind, after all, this wasn't an extermination mission, it was a retrieval mission, there orders were simple, rescue the chief, and get out as soon as possible, but of course, battle plans never survive contact with the enemy...
