(This story is still a work in prosses. I am only three chapters into a much larger story.)
Chapter 1
New toys
It was cool and wet. It was always cool and wet, for the planet Gemini IV hardly ever stopped raining. It was also never night, for Gemini IV has two suns, equally spaced apart causing constant light through the gray clouds. The planet was dense with foliage. Giant rivers and lakes crossed over its green surface. The twin suns gave the planet an eerie glow, blue and green. Blue from the many lakes, and green from the billions of trees. Mountains and deep valleys carved into the soft earth
Captain Smith looked out towards the distant mountains. One sun was setting and the other was rising through the gray clouds. It was a beautiful picture. Overhead a bird chirped in a tree and a rabbit leapt from its hole to start its morning obligations. Rain was falling hard on the roof of the observation tent under which Captain Smith was standing. Smith looked up at the dark green canvas as it sagged under the rains weight. The tent was temporary and looked over the valley. The base was situated on a big outcropping in the middle of a circular valley. It looked a lot like a reverse donout. The base was situated on the center plateau, with two bridges connecting the center to the edges. In the canyon below, pilots tested their skill, swerving and weaving through the naturally formed obstacles. Over the hills, the sun peeked out from behind a cloud like a great eye from the heavens. A single ray of pure light sprang from the cloud and landed directly on smith. It greeted him in the face and it spread across his whole body, filling his heart with warmth. A rainbow appeared in the distance, its many colors sprang from the cannon and sank at the foot of the distant mountains. Rain still pored around him, yet the new display filled him with glee. Today, as the base meteorologist said, would be the last day of rain for three weeks. It was the only three weeks without rain in the whole year.
Smith glared at the mountains through the bright morning sun. Slowly, out of his pocket he pulled a gold plated flask and took a long draught. The warm rum tingled gently down, warming his chest. Smith glanced down at his old fashion wristwatch. Its luminous metal hands reached for the numbers near the edge. It displayed five fifty nine, it was time to wake the troops. Basic training was getting harder too do now that there was the covenant to deal with. It was once rather lax in basic. Well, lax compared to Captain smiths prospective. Now it was more than hard, it was grueling
Drill sergeant O'Ryan came slowly out of the office building. He was big and bulky, the true representation of a helljumper. O'Ryan was clad in black, black pants with a gold belt labeled with the helljumper symbol and a black muscle shirt. On the sides of his belt were hanging two M6C custom Pistols. Having once been caught in a fight with no weapon, O'Ryan never let them out of his sight.
"How ya doing, sir." he said. His voice was ruff and deep. "Good, thanks." Smith sighed. "How are the new recruits? Hope their not giving you a hard time. O'Ryan looked hurt "It'll take more than a few pusses to affect me. Shall we wake 'em? Smith sighed again "I'll do it, then I'll go for a walk." And with that he turned on his heel and headed for the command building. It was made of wood and covered in foliage. As he approached he hummed the marine hymn to the rhythm of his feet crunching the soft gravel. He opened the wooden door and stepped in. It was smoky inside. O'Ryan's cigar lay smothering in an ashtray and Smith would have to chew him out later for fire safety. Rain splattered the window. Smith headed over to a big "eye" on the wall. He tapped it twice gently. A cool female voice rang out over the ceiling speaker.
" Please hold still for retina scan." Smith stood still as the laser pulsed over his eye. It hurt and his eyes watered but he ignored this. " Done." Said the singsong voice. Suddenly on the wall across the room, the hologram of a very beautiful woman appeared. She was clad in a toga and had a rose in one hand. "Good morning sir" the AI sang. "Can I help you?" smith looked at her for a moment. She may be a "smart" AI, but she was pretty dumb. "Aphrodite" Smith said, trying to match he singsong voice. "Wake up the troops and call me in an hour" The 2D image bowed in a mocking manor, flickered and faded.
Smith walked out side into the pouring rain. Slowly he walked along the rows of empty barracks. The structures loomed above his head in a rather menacing quality. Dark water dripped from the windows, creating and image in Smiths mind of a great beast lurking in the shadows, drooling, watching, and savoring a meal to come. Smith shook the delusion from his mind and jogged toward the obstacle course. He ran though it several times with an almost mechanical rhythm. He stopped briefly to catch his breath. The sun was climbing high in the sky and the rain had almost stopped. With this new weather he headed over to the firing rang and inspected its lockers, he pulled out his favored BR55 riffle. He flipped t though the air and caught it. Its slender gripped formed perfectly in Smith ruff hand he put the sight to his eye and fired at the targets lining the wall. The three bullets speed to greet their target. It was a perfect shot, it flew straight and true, hitting the target dead center. Smiths trained hands handled the gun like an old friend. Satisfied that it was good, Smith picked up an m90 shotgun. He hoisted it to his shoulder. Slowly he aimed and squeezed the trigger. It rammed against his shoulder and sent many bullets whizzing at its target. The board was peppered with little holes. Smith set his gun down and started trying other guns.
He practiced firing for a good hour until Aphrodite appeared on the wall. She stood silent and watched him take one last shot, the M6d pistol jerked slightly and the bullet hit the target dead on. "sir, you said call you in two hours." And with that she disappeared. Smith nodded blankly and put down his firearm.
Slowly, Smith headed to the obstacle course again. As he approached, Smith could hear O'Ryan yelling over the light rain. "If I ever catch ya'll cutting corners again, you'll be out of my beloved corp. before you can say D.O.R.!!" D.O.R meant "drop on request." Basically, the only way to quit. Smith entered the gates to the course and stood beside O'Ryan, his face was red and sweaty from yelling. "Why don't you go cool down?" Smith said gently. Grumbling, O'Ryan stormed away, muttering "if this were my corp. theses wimps would be out of hear in ten minutes. "Men!" Smith yelled firmly. "I want ten laps." A dead groan echoed throughout the troops. "And no cutting corners. It is privilege to be a marine, an honor really. If you just wanted to fight go join the other wimps in the army and the navy. But this is the marines, we are better than cutting corners and skipping obstacles. Remember that as you run."
The men did the laps without complaint and without cheating. "See men?" Smith said gingerly as the men formed a line, huffing and puffing. Many were holding there sides and some looked like they were about to fall over. "If you do it right the first time
" he dropped off, letting the troops fill in the rest. " I want you all showered and in the mess hall in 10 minutes. Dismissed!" the men stumbled off.
Smith slowly walked to the command building. Before he entered he stood to observe the valley once more. Its forests glistened and birds of all color stood perched on there bows. "If there is hell on earth I recon this is heaven. And with that he entered the command building. As he entered the computer made an electronic "ding". He went over to it and activated his mail. A new file had been uploaded from command. Smith sighed, opened it and read:

Smith sat for a minute as he thought of his codes. Every one in the UNSC military had a code that was only known by them and the ONI spooks. As smith sat the dots at the end of the last sentence seemed to blink in patience.
Slowly, so as not to his a wrong number, smith entered his pin.
