The Blood Gulch Revolution by Michael Archer

The Blood Gulch Revolution: Part 1
Date: 23 February 2005, 9:30 PM
The light blue Spartan jogged up the red dusty hill towards the blue base. He looked around him at the bare canyon walls. As he looked, thoughts raced through his mind: How did I get in? How did I get out? Why are there two bases in the middle of the canyon? What's this war against the reds for anyway? He knew that officers had explanations for them all, but the young private still wondered why. As he walked into the middle of the base he asked his friend Brain Carly.
"Brain, why are we in a boxed canyon in the middle of nowhere?", he asked taking off his helmet.
"The officers know the answer Sandy. Why don't you ask them? I'm kinda busy right now".
Sandy Cruise sighed and headed out to the back of the base.
"Oh and Sandy?", said Brain
"Yeah"
"I don't really know myself", he said. "I've always wondered too. Why is there a rocket launcher laying on the field in the middle of this boxed canyon?"
Sandy laughed. Brain, what a pal. Sandy took a deep breath and walked up to Sergeant Mac was going through his guns, making sure all of them were there. The Sarge was a nice guy, but quite an oddball.
"Hi Cruise, what do you want from me today?", and the Sergeant.
"Sarge, why are we in this canyon?"
"Can't answer that son. That's one of the strange things in life that God left with us to answer. Why is the grass green?"
"Because photosynthesis causes..."
"Please son. Don't give me smart aleck answers. I'm got some stuff to do". Sandy watched as Mac tried to clean a dust bunny out of the shotgun barrel.
"Sir, that dust won't affect the gun very much..."
"Please Cruise, I'm trying to concentrate. And it's Sarge. I'm not a commissioned officer yet".
"Okay Sarge, but be careful. Remember that time when you were trying to get a scratch out if the sniper rifle and you accidentally hit your ba..."
"Will you get going Cruise!?"
Sandy shrugged and walked to the top of the base. He heard a gun fire and heard Mac call, "Ow, that's going to leave a mark!"
Sandy wondered once you get higher in rank, you don't take advice from lower ranks. Even your friends.
Suddenly, a shot rang out, right by Sandy's head. Sandy ducked and took cover behind the pillar. Sandy heard the Sergeant yell, "We're under attack, Bell, Carly, Cruise! Meet me in below the base to get armed! Sandy jumped into the hole in the base just after a bullet hit his foot causing his shields to flicker.
Sandy met Joe Bell, Brain and the Sarge underneath the base.
"So this is the armoury", Brain whispered to me, "Pretty lame. It's just some assorted weapons tossed on the ground".
"Grab an assault rifle and a sidearm", said Mac. "Except you Sandy. Take the usual."
Sandy grabbed a sniper rifle. When he was young he became interested in archery. He had extremely good eyesight, and had lots of archery trophies in his room. Now with the increased Spartan eyesight, he could hit any target.
"Gentleman", shouted the Sergeant. We are about to fight one of the biggest wars that the world has ever seen".
"Big war?" questioned Brain. "There are only like five guys on the other team".
"Shut up Carly. I've got a foolproof plan that will for sure work. Run around and fire your gun a lot".
"Sarge, foolproof?", said Brain.
"Didn't I just tell you to shut up?"
"Alright then", said the Sarge, "Cruise, go on top of the base and tell me what you see".
Sandy ran up onto the top of the base. From the top he could see the canyon of Blood Gulch, but he could also see a jeep coming into view, the chain gun on the back blazing. Sandy reported to the Sergeant what he saw.
"Well", the Sarge said. "Let them have it!"
Sandy fired the sniper rifle. The bullet echoed throughout the entire canyon. Man this sucks, thought Sandy. There's nothing in this damn canyon.
Sandy's bullet pierced the jeep's tire. The result flipped over the jeep. But the enemy was unharmed. Sandy told the team to attack. He could see the blue team blazing their guns into the field. Meanwhile, the red team flipped their jeep back over and began attacking again, their jeep limping on the ground.
Sergeant Mac to Cruise". shouted the Sarge into the COM channel.
"Cruise to Sergeant", Sandy said", "Are you okay?"
"What do you think?"
Sandy looked at them. Their shields were flickering and dying.
"Take some cover. I think you'll be fine."
"That was rhetorical private! Now head through the teleporter and give us a hand."
Sandy took a deep breath, and headed through the teleporter. A blinding flash of light and Sandy was through. But he wasn't in Blood Gulch. He was in a canyon just like Blood Gulch, but it was deathly cold. This wasn't his beloved Blood Gulch. Why is it that I got so attached to a bare box canyon in the middle of nowhere?

Sandy shuddered. It was really cold. The pale white snow made him think about his friends how they convinced him into taking drugs. After breaking that awful habit he got angry that he actually did such a thing. Some friends he had. He stumbled on some ice as he walked along. Sandy didn't know where he was walking to. Maybe to find someone who could help him.
Sandy decided to climb on top of a cliff and look for any civilization. He found a rock at the side of the canyon. Putting his hands on it, he pulled himself up. Sandy saw a ledge just above the rock. With a strong jump, he landed on the ledge. The young Spartan looked over the canyon. He thought if the teleporter had either sped up time; global warming had taken into effect; or he was just crazy. The third option seemed the most likely.
Suddenly, a piece of the ledge fell off, as with Sandy. He shot his hands up to try to grab on to something. Anything!
"Saved your dear life", Sandy heard as he felt two arms pulling him up. Once Sandy got back on the ledge, he looked up. It was Brian!
"You here?", exclaimed Sandy. "How did you get here?"
"Well, the Sarge told me to 'go find Cruise wherever the hell he his'", Brian said imitating the Sergeant. "So I decided to go through the teleporter to see where you were, and now I'm in this cocaine-filled paradise". Sandy was worried. He remembered that Brian also took drugs once too. He looked at Brian's nose. It was a deep red.
First of all", began Sandy. "We've already broken that disgusting habit. Second of all, it's not cocaine. It's snow".
"Yeah. That's what cocaine is".
"The real snow. That falls from the sky".
"But I feel weird like after I've taken a drug"
"Brain freeze"
"Really? No wonder my nose is clogged".
Sandy entered the dark cave. In his hands he had brought wood he could find. There was barely anything. Brian was trying to make a fire by rubbing sticks. He had been doing it for two hours straight.
"Almost there", he said as Sandy came back. "I'm getting real close. I saw a spark".
Sandy lit a match, put his hand around it and threw it into the pile of wood. He kept close to the fire so it wouldn't go out. He was surprised the match went on in this cold hell.
"You really don't have a camping spirit do you?", said Brian.
The next morning, Sandy awoke with an assault rifle leveled at his head. He quickly woke Brian.
"Huh....huh..what's your problem.........leave me alone....you want me to get up.....ok fine.....what's for breakfast?", Brain looked at the assault rifles. "Oh crap. You know, I don't really want metal for breakfast.", he mumbled.
"Come on get up", ordered the gruff soldier.
Sandy slowly rose to his feet. Brian did the same. The group of Spartans led them out of the cave. Sandy looked at Brian's arm. He had a blanket over it, but Sandy caught a glimpse of a sniper rifle. Brian nodded.
"Hey look!", Sandy shouted. "A patch of grass!"
The red Spartans quickly turned their heads. Brian then tossed the sniper rifle to Sandy. He looked through his scope, and shot the red soldier closest to him. The Spartan fell to the ground with a thud.
Sandy ran up to the top of a small hill and started sniping. He looked down the hill and saw Brian firing his assault rifle. He looked through his scope and saw some more red Spartans running towards him.
"Freeze, put down your weapon!", they shouted in his face.
"No need to shout!", yelled Sandy. "I'm two feet away from you".
A red Spartan put both his hands on his sniper rifle. He jerked it back fiercely. Sandy's face went red with rage, even though no one could see his face.
"Did.....you.....just.....touch.....the.....sniper rifle?".
He inched closer towards the red Spartan.
"Don't....ever.......touch......the....sniper......rifle!".
Sandy stepped back and whacked him with the butt of his rifle. He jumped off the hill and followed Brian, his sniper bullets echoing through the canyon. After long run away from the red Spartans, Sandy sat down to take a breather.
"How dare they touch my sniper rifle!", shouted Sandy.
"Hey calm down Sandy", said Brian. "It's really bad that you get so hyperactive when somebody touches your sniper rifle. How come you let me touch it?"
"Because, you're my friend".
"But what if I was some red guy in disguise?"
"I would rip you apart."
"Now Sandy, I know you don't mean that. Come on, lets go find some blue civilization".
They walked slowly untill they came to a metal buliding. On it, it read:
Sidewinder canyon
Blue Base

Sidewinder Canyon
Blue Base
Sandy read the words over in his mind.
"Sidewinder, Sidewinder. Doesn't ring a bell", said Sandy.
"Oh!", said Brian. "Sidewinder is really cold canyon that happens to look like Blood Gulch. You haven't gone crazy Sandy, the teleporter just sent us to Sidewinder. When we get back, I'll tell the Sergeant to fix it".
Sandy smiled. Good old Brian. Always looking on the bright side of things.. They slowly approached the base. As they reached the mouth, Sandy and Brian saw weapons scattered on the ground.
"Well one thing isn't different", said Brian. "This armoury is the same as the one in Blood Gulch".
Suddenly a blue Spartan hopped down from a ladder.
"Hello sir", the Spartan said. The Spartan's sounded like a female. It's hard to explain what it sounded like. You can't describe sounds in words.
"Sir?", said Sandy as he took of his helmet. "We are just some lone soldiers lost on Sidewinder who got here by a teleporter".
The female Spartan took off her helmet. She was very beautiful. She had dirty blonde hair, and hazel eyes. She then whispered softly, "Not another one".
"Not another one?", said Brian. "Wait. Does this happen to you all the time?"
"Well, yes. We don't really know why, but it seems like when a Spartan gets lost through the teleporter, they always end up here". "Well, I'll get to work on the teleporter to send you to......".
"Blood Gulch", Sandy continued. "Dusty canyon, bare walls, idiot Sergeants. You know".
"Yeah, I do. My name is Phoenix. What's yours?".
"My name is Sandy Cruise, and over here is...".
"I don't need you to introduce me Sandy", Brian interrupted. Then he turned to Phoenix. "My name is Brian Carly of Blood Gulch".
Sandy looked over the horizon. He saw red shapes moving towards the base.
"Ma'am", Sandy said. "You might want to prepare the guns, and weapons, because the reds are coming".
"What!?", she said. She looked into her own sniper rifle, scanning the area. She then grabbed an assault rifle.
"Cruise, Carly, follow me".
Sandy and Brian headed up the long ladder to the top of the base.
"Alright men", Phoenix shouted. "Grab a battle rifle, and a sidearm".
"Excuse me Ma'am, but what's a battle rifle?", said Sandy.
"A battle rifle is a cross between a pistol, and an assault rifle, if I can put it that way". Phoenix tossed him a battle rifle. Sandy then slowly looked into the little scope. It had 2x magnification, not as much as the sniper rifle, but it could fire like an assault rifle.
Brian tossed Sandy his sniper rifle. Sandy peered through it, and then fired. The bullet hit the first Spartan's shields. Sandy fired another bullet. The bullet pierced into the the Spartan, as he fell over. Sandy then took out his battle rifle and fired three short bursts. The bullets hit the shields of another Spartan.
"Well, said Sandy. "I best be on my way".
"Well I've havn't rerouted the teleporter yet", said Phoenix.
"Well", whispered Brian to Sandy. "The action would be nice".
"Yeah. But I don't want to die before I get home.....I mean Blood Gulch".
"Come on Sandy. You're the best sniper here. Come on. Lets go whip some red ass!".
Sandy groaned, and jumped down from the base to fight the reds. Brian followed him. And so did the rest of the Blue team. Sandy shot his battle rifle, and so did the rest of the Blue team.
After a long fight, Phoenix told Brian and Sandy to get some rest. Brian then laid out his sleeping bags he brought.
"Hey Brian", said Sandy. "Why did you bring sleeping bags? I thought you thought that you were just going to find me quickly find me. You didn't actually think that you were going to be stuck here at Sidewinder, did you?"
"Well, you know. Come prepared. You never know".
"Ok. What if I was on top of a mountain? You didn't bring any picks".
"Shut up Sandy".
They laid their sleeping bags inside the base and fell asleep.
"Well", said Phoenix. "I rerouted the teleporter to take you to Blood Gulch. So just hop on in. Oh and I forgot to give you something". In Phoenix's hand, there lay a battle rifle.
"I thought you would like. You're a really good sniper. This way you'll be able to snipe with an assault rifle in a way. Well you better get going then". Sandy took the battle rifle out of Phoenix's hand. Brian and Sandy counted to three, and headed through the strange green teleporter.
"Finally Cruise! You're back. What took you so long?", Sandy heard Segeant Mac's voice come over the radio. "We need some backup! Come to the middle of the canyon!".
Sandy didn't listen. He ran towards the wall of the canyon, threw off his helmet, and kissed the canyon wall.
Well, he thought. I'm finally home.
