The Atlas Incursion Pt.1
Date: 4 July 2004, 4:55 PM
The Atlas Incursion By David Johnson and Robert Schmidt
2143 (ATLAS Time)Dropship Delta 6-4, 70 klicks north of Mois an' Rabet, Minerva.
Staff sergeant Keichi Kondesu looked out the glass-steel cockpit of the modified pelican. The terrain below them shot past at mach- 7 as they burned into the atmosphere. "We're coming in!" said private Casey Hill. "Good," said Keichi. The sergeant picked up his comm. head set from the instrument panel and tuned the frequency to ZA 10953. "We're comin' in." The sergeant looked into the verification display on his new visor to see three lights blink on. He spoke into the head set again, "I want you all to lock and load your equipment and get ready for touch down. Corporal, I want you manning the turret on the 'hog. Stephan and Larin hop on the ATVs and cover our flanks. We will be making our way to a covie' supply depot were we will be placing a Havoc. I want you all to be on the look out, we will be going deep into covie' territory and I don't want any casualties except for those damn aliens."
Corporal Cecil Baynes sat in one of the few remaining drop chairs in the hold of the pelican. "You heard the man get your butts in gear and get ready for touch down." Yelled Baynes to the squad With this the team unstrapped and started to put ammo clips in their pockets and grenades in their belt.
The pelican swooped down low to the trees skimming their surfaces at 300 km/h. the dropship came to a stop over an empty field. The sensors showed no enemy contacts. The pelican hovered around 2 feet above the ground while the magnetic bolts holding the vehicle in the tail and on the wings released and dropped the vehicles to the ground, their shock absorbers compressing from the force of the drop. The back hatch of the pelican opened as the troops in side took up defensive positions even though their motion sensors showed all clear.
Their suspicion was correct as a volley of plasma fire wiped across the hull of the pelican. Ten grunts and a single elite emerged from the trees.
"It's a scout party," Baynes yelled, "take 'em out before they report"
The three soldiers in the pelican's hold opened up on the scouts. Grunts dropped as bullets ripped through their flimsy armor. One of the bullets punctured the methane tank of one of the grunts. The methane ignited and exploded, scattering pieces of grunts. Plasma flew through the smoke smashing the hopes of the marines that the blast had taken out the whole party. An elite and two grunts charged through the dust, but their efforts were in vain as auto fire from dual SMGs ripped them apart.
The soldiers looked behind them to see who had finished off the covenant. Sargent Keichi stood in the doorway with twin SMGs smoking in his hands.
"Thanks sir," Private Larin Riyonus exclaimed, " I thought we were goners."
"No problem," the sarge responded, "but we don't have time for chit chat we have to get that nuke to its destination."
The Sargent hopped out of the pelican and tore off the heat resistant film on the warthog as Private Stephen Aran, and Larin un-wrapped the ATV's. The troop unloaded the back of the pelican taking ammo and fuel and strapping them to the vehicles. After every thing was loaded lieutenant Casey Hill flew the pelican over to the tree line and set it down. The team then covered the pelican in camouflage.
" Alright," the sarge said over the com. channel, "lets saddle up, and move out."
With this the squad went over to the vehicles. Stephen and Larin both got onto the ATVs. Casey entered the driver's seat and started the modified warthog its engine roaring to life. Corporal Baynes climbed up the back of the warthog onto the modified gunners platform. He flipped the switch on the control panel and the targeting system of the tri barrel rocket launcher and the LAAG auto rifle powered up.
"We're ready when you are sir." Reported Baynes over the Com. System.
"Alright corporal." Keichi said as he climbed into the passenger seat of the 'Hog. "This is the way we need to head." The sergeant said as he put a Nav. Marker on the visors of his squad mates. "Larin, Stephen, I want you to form on our flanks.
"Roger." Larin responded.
"I copy." Said Stephan.
As the squad drove over the partial plains, none of the members saw the formation of banshees flying far over head.
CHAPTER 2 --------------------
2158 (ATLAS Time)Kilo 1-2, 48 klicks north of Mois an' Rabet, Minerva.
Stephen was blinded by a large flash just a few meters ahead of him. He reached to cover his eyes but the blast came with a large concussion wave that blew him off of his ATV and sent him rolling on the ground. Had the massive report of the blast not deafened him, he might have heard the banshees screaming in, but it was no use.
Stephen screamed and grabbed his side as a sharp pain struck into him. Around him the ground began to sizzle and he rolled to the side to avoid any more pain. Fortunately for him, he was saved by Corporal Baynes, who took notice of the squadron and had already taken aim on the 2nd banshee.
"Take this covie' scum!" he yelled, as twin rockets streaked out of the warthogs launchers, and into the side of the oncoming craft.
The Banshee erupted in a massive fireball and barrel rolled into the ground a mere twenty meters from where Stephen lie on the ground.
By the time the third banshee had begun its strafing run, the entire group had spotted the covenant aircraft, and began pumping lead into the air in front of the fighter.
The pilot, deciding that there was no way he could get in close enough without being killed, pulled a split S maneuver and began putting distance between him and the human troops on the ground.
"This is Kilo 1-2, we have been spotted by Covenant air forces and are under attack, requesting assistance. Any UNSC units please respond." Keichi said into his com. unit.
"Roger that Kilo 1-2, this is Colonel Lankton, we are inbound hot, ETA one minute."
"Everyone take cover, Casey, get that warthog into the forest, I don't want those banshees taking it out!" Keichi yelled.
Immediately Baynes, Riyonus, and Kondesu all jumped behind tree stumps and rocks, and began shooting into the air, trying to keep the banshees at bay. Stephen was still out in the open however, laying on the ground screaming as his flesh continued to burn under his armor.
"Larin, get over and pull Aran to cover, and for Christ sake fix him up!" Keichi yelled at Larin.
'You got it skip." Larin said, as he readied to climb out from behind cover.
"COVERING FIRE!" Keichi screamed, as him and Baynes began pumping lead into the air above them.
Larin ran as fast as he could to Arans' position, if he hadn't been a former track runner in high school he probably wouldn't have made it. The banshee's immediately took notice of him and dove in towards him, braving the ground fire.
As they pulled out of their dive they were given an unfriendly 'hello'. A pair of AIM-384 Sky Fox missiles slammed into the each of the banshees, vaporizing them in mid air.
"Kilo 1-2, your clear. If you need anything else, the 172nd will be here for you."
"Thanks Colonel. Kilo 1-2 out." Keichi responded.
Keichi walked over to where Aran lay, under the supervision of Larin.
"How is he doing?" Kondesu asked.
"2nd and 3rd degree burns over most of his lower stomach...could be worse. I stopped most of the bleeding, but he is going to be out for the rest of this mission, we need to find a way to medevac him out of here.
CHAPTER 3 --------------------
2214 (ATLAS Time) Kilo 1-2, 48 klicks north of Mois an' Rabet, Minerva.
"Colonel Lankton do you copy?" Kondesu spoke over the radio.
"Roger Kilo 1-2 we read you, this is Lankton, what can I do for you?" the voice over the radio responded.
"We need a emergency medevac ASAP we are at coordinates 17493-57 by 59376-34. do you copy?"
"Roger Kilo 1-2 medevac is on its way."
"I copy Colonel, we also need reinforcements."
"Roger Kilo 1-2 reinforcements are on the medevac."
"Thanks Colonel."
"Acknowledged Kilo 1-2, Lankton out."
As the radio clicked off Keichi turned back to speak to the squad. Kondesu noticed how much blood Stephen was loosing.
"How is he, will he be alright?"
"He'll be okay as long we get him out of here soon." Larin spoke to the sergeant not looking up from tending to Aran.
After ten minutes of waiting in silence a distant whine of engines could be heard the squad tensed their minds playing tricks on them. Telling themselves the sound was the sound of banshees' engines. It was to their relief when they outline of a pelican could be seen on the horizon.
As the pelican came down on its landing gear the medics jumped out of the back hatch as well as a marine in the new full body armor. The name stenciled across the front read Noches B. The medics loaded Stephen on to a stretcher and carried him to the bay of the pelican.
As the sounds of the pelicans engines faded into the distance the marine walked up to Keichi.
"Private first class Berto de Noches reporting for duty sir." The private saluted Keichi and stood at a strict attention.
"Welcome to the squad, I wish we had time to get to know you but we are in a combat situation and we need to get moving." Keichi saluted.
The squad regrouped and boarded the vehicles. The convoy continued twords the supply depot and hundreds of covenant soldiers.
CHAPTER 4 --------------------
2229 (ATLAS Time) Kilo 1-2, 48 klicks north of Mois an' Rabet, Minerva.
"Sir," Hill radioed, "we have a problem"
" What is it Casey?" Keichi responded.
" Well", the private responded " when those banshees were attacking one of the plasma blasts must have hit the drive train of the hog, because we are limping badly . . . I don't know what we can do."
" I'll think of something'", Keichi thought to himself, then switched to a private frequency. "Colonel Lankton, this is Kilo 1-2, we have another problem."
"Roger that, what can we do for you?"
" We need alternate transportation do you have any thing you can spare?"
" You're in luck Kilo 1-2, we happen to have a King Cobra super tank from the most recent encounter on Reach. We can have it to you in 15 minutes until then I suggest you wait in a safe spot. I need your drop coordinates."
Sargeant Keichi relayed their coordinates over a secure channel and instructed the squad to take up defensive positions.
15 minutes later a Penguin heavy dropship marked with the 172nd insignia on its side arrived at the squads coordinates. The craft was carrying the super tank inside the main compartment. The penguin dropship opened its rear doors, and the tank slid backwards out the back end, creating a loud thud as it hit the ground.
After checking for the all clear Casey ran to the hatch of the cobra and powered up the main engine.
"All clear, nothing for miles." Casey radioed
"Alright you guys I want the same formation. Noches, Riyonus I want you two on the ATV's Cecil your with me we're going to operate the main cannon.
The squad road across the hilly country side till they came to the edge of an immense plain.
"Be on guard men, this is prime air ambush territory" Keichi Radioed
The squad pulled out onto the field at maximum speed trying to get across the field before any covenant patrols came for them. Luck was not on their side as Noches spotted a covenant formation at the squads two o' clock.
"covies on the horizon," Noches radioed, "at two o' clock."
"Crap it's a dropship and she's got two banshees flying support!" exclaimed Riyonus.
" Let's see this baby's bite!!" yelled Baynes as he fired one of the Cobras 140mm rounds at the dropship.
The squad watched as the round vaporized one of the banshees and yelled in exulsion as the 2nd round ripped the dropship to pieces. Covenant bodies could be seen falling as the second banshee turned and fled.
The squad continued on over the vast plain until they came to the edge of a large hill. The chief sent larin to the crest of the hill for recon.
"Holy mother of God," Larin spouted, "there has to be at least two battalions of covenant soldiers on the plateau beyond the hill."
"You better get back to our position." The sergeant responded.
"Yes sir," Larin turned around and returned to the rest of the squad
