Chapter One
1400 Hours August 11, 2553(Military Calendar)/
Inner Colonies, Moon Complex, Inquisitor
Planet Earth
The station was strangely quiet with the Covenant only and hour away. The battle for Earth was still raging on. Many of the UNSC ships were being blown out of space. Countless Marines were killed or M.I.A. The battle seemed somewhat pointless, but we couldn't just let Earth fall without a fight. I guess you can say that the Inquisitor had so far been 'lucky'. Sergeant Steve W. Wesley didn't mind the peace. He has deep-set slate-gray eyes. His thick, straight, chocolate-colored hair is worn in a style that reminds you of a devil's horns. He has a lean build. His skin is ruddy. He has a small mouth and large hands. He knew it would end like all good things but he tried not to think about it. The problem was he and his squad couldn't stop thinking of the upcoming battle; it would be a hard one. The station was over 1,000 square kilometers large, there were only 200 Marines to defend it, and 150 were still in cryo sleep. The reason they had to defend this station was that there was a new secret project, called the BEST. It stood for Bio Enhanced Strike Team. This project could turn the tide of the war. The station was poorly armed with heavy artillery like Scorpion MBT and Warthogs. They did have a couple Mongoose fast attack vehicles. Other than that, they were dependent on their battle rifles and SMG's. Sergeant Wesley's squad had just arrived from fleeing a Covenant flagship, they were tired, war torn, and about to blackout, but they stood there as if they had just woke up from a two day nap.
They all carried battle rifles and SMG's, except one. PVT. Dizzy Mendez. Her silky, straight, sand-colored hair is short and is worn in an artistic style. She has a muscular build. Her skin is deeply tanned. She has a hooked nose. She carried a sniper rifle and a poison dart gun. She was the best shot with that dart gun. She was part of an elite squad, Pulsar Squad. Also part of Wesley's squad was PVT Linda Holmes, who had large eyes the color of milk chocolate. Her luxurious, straight, black hair is medium-length and is worn in a simple style. She is very tall and has a busty build. Her skin is tanned. She has a weak chin and large hands. TECH Fred Higgins; His luxurious, straight, black hair is worn in a style that reminds you of a pile of leaves. He has an elegant build. His skin is china-white. He has high cheekbones and prominent ears. Field Medic Gary Childs has hooded blue eyes. He is bald, but used to have silky, wavy, yellow hair. He has a long moustache. He is very short and has a narrow build. His skin is china-white. He has a high forehead and large hands. And PVT Andy Wallace has narrow gray eyes that are like two windows looking out on an overcast sky. His fine, wavy, yellow hair is worn in a style that reminds you of an overused mop. He is short and has a masculine build. His skin is china-white. He has a domed forehead and thick eyebrows. They were reliable men but they were about to be put to the test. They didn't know it yet, but there was a large covenant force heading straight for them. Within five minutes, the drop ships would land in the launch bays and slowly take the Inquisitor.
Sergeant Wesley slowly walked toward the guard tower as he checked his rifle. He grabbed onto the ladder and climbed up to find a door in his way. He reached up, turned the handle, and pushed it up. As he crawled though the hole he saw PVT Mendez looking thought the scoped of her S2AM sniper rifle. Beyond her was a large green valley with almost no trees. "See anything worth my attention private?" Mendez turned her head with a smile. "Sir, there is nothing to report to you at this moment. But there is a dog that is chasing its tail." Wesley walked over and snatched the sniper rifle from her hands. "Let me see this." He leveled the rifle and looked thought the scope. Sure enough, there was a dog chasing its tail. "That doesn't make any since. All civilians were E-vaced an hour ago." "Maybe our troops missed him." Mendez said as she took her rifle back. Wesley heard the sound of quick footsteps it was quiet. PVT Wallace burst thought the door scaring Wesley and Mendez. Wallace looked to be out of breath. "What the hell is it private!?" He regained his breath and spoke.
"Sir we've lost contact with all landing bays. The Covenant is here!" Wesley switched off the safety and started barking out orders. "Wallace, get on the radio and tell command, then get the squad ready to defend this station! Mendez stay here and snipe cover only when I tell you. Got it!" " Yes Sir!" Both privates went to there duties. With that, Wesley walked to the door, climbed down the ladder, and ran toward the fixed gun. Holmes was on the gun while Higgins, Wallace, and Childs were in the sandbag pit with the radio.
"What's the situation?" Wallace looked back at him. "Well command is either gone or the covenant is blocking the signal." Mendez came over the comm., "Sir, Covenant troops ahead, about ten and a Wraith as support." "Roger, fire in the unshielded targets with dart gun." Wesley took out his binoculars and watched the tank come closer. There was a silent click above him as Mendez fired on the grunts and jackals. It was so silent that he almost missed it.
He looked thought his binoculars again to find one grunt on the ground. The other covenant checked the body and the area. There was another click and two jackals fell grabbing at their necks. Now knowing of the threat the jackals activated their shields. The shields didn't help them as two more darts flew though the air and punched into their skin. The grunts ran in fear of dying from the darts as the elites hid behind the tank. The wraith slowly moved toward Wesley and his troops while the elites charged the sandbag pit. Their charge was cut short as sniper rounds sliced though the air and through the elites heads. The tank kept coming with its main gun charging as Higgins jumped up and ran the other way in fear not wishing to meet the tank face to face.
Wesley turned and yelled, "Get your ass back here marine!" But it was too late, Higgins was already 50 feet away. Wesley saw a purple streak and then he turned to see Higgins fall as the streak hit him square between the shoulders. He screamed in pain as his undershirt caught on fire and started to burn him alive. Wesley leveled his BR55 rifle and fired a three round burst into Higgins skull to end his pain. Everyone turned away not wanting to look at Higgins corpse. Despite the death of Higgins, the wraith kept moving toward them and the sniper was still out there. Wesley clicked his comm. on. "Mendez, can you get a clear shot at that sniper?" A few seconds passed then there was the click of the dart gun. "Sir enemy sniper down." Mendez's voice came though clear.
"Good now we need to get rid of that wraith once and for all." Wesley knew that he had to rid his team of the wraith but he didn't know how. Just when he thought they were doomed, the enemy tank turned to face a new threat. He looked though his battle riflescope to see three black streaks blur across the wraith. It turned and fired at the blurs but it missed completely. He looked back at the wraith to see that there was a small red dot on the tank. The red dot suddenly expanded then exploded causing the wraith to become a fireball of covenant metal. "What the hell was that sir?" Childs looked at Wesley for an answer. Wesley didn't know but he intended to find out. "Wallace those were humans, try to hail them." He stood to see if he could get a glimpse of the blurs. Nothing. "This is Private Andy Wallace calling to allied forces in the area. Is there anyone there?" Five seconds passed without answer. "Repeat, this Private Andy Wallace. Is there any on
." He was cut off by a hushed voice.
"Watch your backs, there are flood aboard the covenant ship and they have been set loose." Wesley walked over to the radio, graded the mike, and spoke into it. "This is Sergeant Steve Wesley what is your location?" Nothing more came over the radio. He threw down the mike and walked over to the other side of the 10-foot wide sandpit. "Sir is it true?" Childs was now at eye level with him. "Is what true solider?" he said turning to face Childs. "What they say about the flood. That they take over your body, rot your flesh, and use you to kill your friends." Wesley had face the flood once before and didn't want to do it again. "Yes it's all true. The flood are cruel and deadly if you don't know where to aim. Just aim at the chest where the tentacles are. That will stop them." Wesley sat down to think if this was true. Could the flood really be on the station? He tried not to think about it for now but if it was true it would be difficult to survive.
The squad had been hold up in the sandpit for an hour by a huge battalion of covenant troops. Mendez had been picking off the patrols the got too close to the sandpit below. Wesley sat with his rifle across his chest ready for an attack. He took a big gulp of air and about gagged. He quickly fell forward and covered his mouth. "I think Higgins is starting to decompose." Mendez leaned over the rail and yelled, "Sir that's not Higgins you're smelling. It's a swarm of flood!" Wesley stood to see that little yellow blobs were overwhelming the entire covenant battalion. Dozens of the troops were being mutilated into combat forms. "Listen up squad. As soon as those combat are ready there coming for us. Mendez, aim for the chest and kill as many as you can before they get moving. Wallace, get another team of Marines here ASAP. Childs, protect Wallace. Holmes, fire at will when they're in range." With that all four Marines yelled, "YES SIR!" Wesley Walked over and joined Mendez in the tower. He looked though the scope of his rifle to see the combat forms rush towards the sand pit below. He heard Wallace on the radio, "This is Private Wallace, is anyone there? We need help. Large mass of flood combat forms." Wesley leveled, aimed for the nearest combat form, and fired a three round burst. The rounds caught the enemy in the chest popping the infection form inside. It fell to the ground and was trampled by the other enemies.
Chapter 2: Pulsar Squad to the Rescue
1506 Hours August 11, 2553(Military Calendar)/
Inner Colonies, Moon Complex,, Inquisitor
Planet Earth
Major Roger Wolfson has round eyes the color of varnished wood. His fine, curly, chestnut hair is worn in a style that reminds you of an animal's ears. He is very tall and has a broad-shouldered build. His skin is cream-colored. He has a high forehead and thin eyebrows. The pelican shifted to the left as Wolfson walked to the back and stared out into the darkness. Wolfsons platoon had received a distress signal form the Inquisitor and was on route to help. His squad, named as Pulsar Squad, was the heart and fist of the platoon. His second in command was Sergeant Ray Edwards. He has wide gray eyes that are like two silver coins. His fine, wavy, black hair is medium-length and is worn in a businesslike, uncomplicated style. He is tall and has an over muscled build. His skin is light-colored. He has a low forehead and delicate ears. He was the worst shot of the squad, but he was a born leader.
Next was Private Juan Mendez, he was the squad sniper and smartass. He has droopy ebony eyes. His silky, straight, neck-length hair is the color of milk chocolate, and is worn in a utilitarian style. He is short and has a boyish build. His skin is deeply-tanned. He has a low forehead. The only other squad member that could snipe like him was Private Alan Wood. His thick, wavy, yellow hair is worn in a style that reminds you of a tangled bush. He has five o'clock shadow. He is very tall and has a masculine build. His skin is light-colored. He has a small nose and large feet. He could and would always score one under Mendez. Amanda Wells was the squad's techie and only female squad member. She has almond-shaped brown eyes that are like two bronze coins. Her thick, straight, red hair is worn in a style that reminds you of a sea urchin. She is very short and has a thin build. Her skin is pale. She has full lips and a wide chin. Together they were the best of the best and good friends.
Wolfson felt the pelican speed up under his feet. He almost fell out the back but he grabbed a hand grab to catch himself. The pilot came over the comm, "Hold on we coming in hot!" He ran to a seat and strapped himself in. The pelican shook as it was hit by plasma and then spun out of control toward the station. Wolfson looked over at the cockpit door to see it was gone along with the cockpit. "Everybody, be prepared to jump in two minutes." Four lights winked in his HUD as he stood and walked toward the open cockpit door. Two minute ticked by after what seemed like days. "Follow me!" With that he ran toward the back ramp and jumped. Five seconds later the pelican exploded and Wolfson felt the heat on his back. He wanted to turn to see of the others had made it but he knew better. The station came up quickly to meet him and he hit it hard. Slowly he stood with his magnetic boots holing him in place and look around. His four-squad members landed next to him, fully alive.
Wolfson helped them up as he said, "Is everyone all right?" Everyone nodded their heads. "Good. There should be a hatch near here so lets spread out and find it." The squad immediately moved out in a circle trying to find the hatch. Three minutes passed when Mendez yelled. "Found it Sir! Over here." Everyone ran over to see Juan open the hatch and climb in. When every body was inside Wolfson ordered Edwards to get the nearest Marine team on the radio. "This is Sergeant Ray Edwards Calling any UNSC forces in the area. Please come in." A few minutes ticked by then a voice broke over the radio. "This is Private Wallace, I read you Sir." Before Edwards could speak, a new voice spoke. "Sir we need you over here right now. There's a large group of flood. Please hurry!" The radio filled with static then went dead. "Looks like they need help. Wells, Mendez, Wells, find us some transportation."
Wallace continued to watch the radio for allied forces. After what seemed to be days, the radio sparked to life. "This is Sergeant Ray Edwards Calling any UNSC forces in the area. Please come in." Wallace raced over to the radio but the mike was broken. After five minutes of working with the mike it started to work. "This is Private Wallace, I read you Sir." Wesley walked over and grabbed the mike. "Sir we need you over here right now. There's a large group of flood. Please hurry!" Just then, a green bolt flew at the group. The blot hit the radio knocking it out. There was a Human combat form with a carbine standing over the sandpit. Before it could fire again, it was downed by a hail of bullets.
Wesley stood up and looked the radio, it was busted up bad. "Well we need another radio." Childs said with a smile. Wesley smiled back then joined Mendez. "See a place we can go?" She pointed toward a bunker on the other side of the valley. "There's a good chance there's a radio over there too." She said as she looked though her sniper scope. Wesley turned and faced Gorman. "Gorman, get up here now." Gorman did as she was told and climbed u the tower. "Stay here and protect Mendez until I call over the comm. Got it?" They both nodded and he slid down the ladder to the rest of his squad. "Listen up. There's a bunker that might have a working radio on the other side of the valley. We're going to go get it. LET'S GO. HURRY UP, there's flood waiting for us." Just as they were about to take off two warthogs and cargohog pulled up carrying five ODST's. One of the men got out and walked over calmly. "I am Major Roger Wolfson. We got your message and then the radio went dead."
Wesley nodded and said, "I am Sergeant Steve Wesley and you can see that our radio is shot. We were heading over to that bunker to see if there's one." Wolfson looked over at the bunker. "It would make a great HQ and MED tent. Let's set up in that bunker." After introducing the squads and packing the warthogs and cargohog with supplies and ammo, Wolfson gave out orders. "Well let's get going. I want three teams," Wolfson turned to his team, "Wells, Gorman, Edwards, Wood, Wallace, and Childs, your red team. You take the hogs. Mendez and Mendez, your blue team. Take point by the first warthog. Wesley you're with me. Everyone get that?" All nine soldiers gave a nod. "Than lets move out." The soldiers immediately moved to carry out their orders. The whole squad moved as one as they started there journey. They were about half way and nothing had tried to oppose them. Wolfson thought it suspicious but quickly put the thought aside.
Wesley saw something move in the distance and leveled his rifle. The whole convoy stopped and waited. Wolfson ran over to Wesley for back up. "What is it?" Wesley watch for a second but saw nothing. "Nothing, I thought I saw something but its nothing." The convoy started to move again with a faster pace. Wesley almost had to jog to keep up. Two minutes passed when something leapt out of a tree. He aimed his rifle and fired a tree round in to the objects chest. It was a flood combat form and it was now dead. Wesley sighed, when he heard the sound of footsteps. He looked back to see a large swarm of flood rushing toward them. "Flood and lots of them!" Wolfson turned and fired, as did Wells on the LAAG turret. "Wells, Wallace, stay here and help hold. The rest of you double-time it to that bunker. Go, Go, Go!" The others took off toward the bunker as Wallace jumped out of the hog and fired on the flood.
They were impossible to get rid of. For everyone that Wesley killed five more appeared. "Where the hell are they coming from?" yelled Wallace. Wells, still firing, looked over. "Who cares just kill them." "We're going to have to make a break for it.!" Wolfson yelled over the loud Warthog gun. Just as they were about to run the cargohog pulled up behind them Childs honked the horn urging them to get in. Wesley turned and ran to the vehicle. Wolfson did the same. They both jumped on and held on. The hog sped up quickly with the warthog behind them, still firing. Three minutes later they arrived at the bunker, witch had already had a defense. The rest of the soldiers were in side watching though small windows. Wesley counted, there were only nine. "Where is Gorman?" He asked. Edwards had a grim look as he looked up at Wesley. "We were ambushed by a covenant team. After they retreated, she was gone. We looked for her but there was no trace left." "That strange." Wesley sat down to think. "What's strange?" Wolfson said. "The covenant never retreats."
