ODST: The Resistance (Part 1, A Stroll Through New York)
Date: 23 July 2004, 6:44 PM
New York was a wasteland, a city in ruins. Paris, D.C., Moscow, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and other major world cities were in the same situation.
The year is 2552. Reach had fell to the Covenant juggernaut. Somehow, someway, even with all the protections in place, the Covenant had found Earth. Humanity was not going to let her fall easily. The best of the best had been sent to protect her: the Marines. More specifically, the ODSTs. They were a completely volunteer outfit and very strict as to who would become one. Only the elite were chosen. They were qualified to operate every human infantry vessel, and knew how to operate many Covenant ones. They knew every weapon inside and out. Humanity's survival was in their hands. They were the resistance.
Staff Sergeant Sammi Sonchez ordered her three-man fire team forward. They were to rendezvous with the other two teams making up their sqaud at 2300 hours. The next Covenant ship was to land just outside the rendezvous point at 0100 hours, two hours after rendezvous. When it did, the self-dubbed "Helljumpers" were to set off an EMP blast that would nuetralize all electronics within a five block radius for more than an hour, blinding the Covenant. Reinforcements would arrive onsite, and they would storm the Covenant ship. Once they had taken control, they use it to sneak aboard a Covenant frigate. The Staff Sergeant checked her GPS. "Recon reports a heavy Covenant presence here," she pointed to what was once a large beautiful courtyard surround by huge elegant buildings, but was now a site of destruction. The surrounding buildings had been blasted apart by the Covenant, and looked as if they could fall on a moments notice. In addition to the standard training, these individuals were trained in the ways of stealth and concealment. Hopefully they could make it to the drop zone without attracting to much attention. Each Marine carried a silenced MA12B Battle Rifle, and a silenced M6D pistol. In addition, a 20 centimeter combat knife was part of the supply each ODST carried. "Move it!" Sonchez ordered. "We're gonna keep west of that courtyard, hopefully we'll be able to avoid that patrol."
Unfortunately for them, it didn't happen the way they planned. The Covenant patrol (4 Ghosts piloted by Elites) moved toward their position, just as the team thought they were in the clear. "Staff Sergeant, here they come!" Corporal Luke Dalton said. "Shit!" Corporal Jacob Lambert whispered, readying his Battle Rifle. "No!" the Staff Sergeant said urgently. "Not until we're sure they see us." Just as she finished her sentence the lead Ghost opened up, and plasma fire rained on their position. "Shit!" The Marines fired on the Ghost simultaneously. The left wing seperated from the vehicle in a firey explosion. The Elite was thrown from the purple hover-craft, and was unfortunate enough to land on his head, breaking his neak. The next ghost in line hit the first, flipped through the air, and hit a building, smashing the pilot. The Staff Sergeant rolled a grenade from their position; it rolled to a stop, just near the overturned Ghost. When it exploded, the already maimed Ghost flipped through the air, causing one of the remaining pilots to swerve out of the way. But as he did so, it skittered into a ditch, and threw him from the vehicle. The team concentrated fire on the Elite and put him down. Now the final Ghost was closing fast on their position, close enough that it plasma wouldn't miss. "Move!" Staff Sergeant Sonchez yelled. "Shoot!" she cried as the vehicle moved past their position. The team fired into the alien's exposed back and the Elite fell forward over the controls. The Ghost went into an uncontrolled path, and finally smashed into a pile of rubble. "So much for undetected," Corporal Dalton said. "No, I think it'll be okay; were not close enough to the drop zone for them to guess our mission. Now let's get out of here before the rest of the Covenant in this area come to investeigate."
"So now we wait," Sammi said as they finally reach the rendezvous point. Other than their previous encounter, they reached the drop zone without incident. Neither of the other two teams had any encounters. "Sergeant, take Bravo and secure the area." "Yes, ma'am," Sergeant John Roberts said. "Bravo, with me!" he called and led Bravo into the darkness. They used their night vision goggles, and stuck to the darkest areas. The Covenant were on alert, but unaware of the Human presence. Fire team Bravo killed no less than twenty Covenant Elites that night, using only their combat knives. "It's done ma'am," Roberts reported as they approaced in the darkness. "Great. Sergeant Williams and his team rigged the EMP. We're all set."
Fifteen minutes later the Covenant ship landed, and the ODSTs triggered the EMP. What little light there was, from the Covenant equipment, went out. There was total darkness. HQ knew it happend because all their sensors in the area went offline. Three Pelicans loaded with Marines were sent to the Drop Zone. "All right, Marines! Let's get aboard!" the Staff Sergeant said. 27 Marines stormed the Covenant ship. Humanity needed this mission to succeed. It was their only hope.
