Halo: The Legacy of the Spartan IIIs Chapter 1: The Unexpected Truth
Date: 1 January 2003, 6:44 pm
0824 Hours, UNSC destroyer Abraham Lincoln In orbital patrol over planet earth November 13, 2602 Lieutenant Wilson tapped a few buttons on his holographic keypad. A technology enhanced by their allies, a series of aliens formerly known as the covenant, but are now a division of the UNSC. However, the covenant agreed to send the rest of the forces opposing the UNSC to join them, but there was always someone who opposed them. In 2553 the covenant nearly destroyed Earth, but after being totally wiped out by John 117, the last Spartan II, who died in 2600, a great majority of the covenant aliens joined the humans. Huh? The view screen popped up, but a series of strange purple organic shapes appeared. "Uh... Sir?" He said to his captain, Capt. Tyson. "What is it, Lieutenant?" Asked the Captain. "Incoming covenant ships, sir. Scans show that thesecraft are not part of the UNSC." "Are you sure?" "Of course, sir. I checked it several times." "Great. Let's welcome them." "Aye, sir." "Lieutenant Haroldson, prepare the MAC cannons." "Right away, sir." Lt. Haroldson replied. "Lieutenant McDouglas, charge engines to one-hundred-fifty percent. We'll need to get out of here quickly if they launch those plasma torpedoes at us." "Okay, sir." Said Lt. McDouglas.
"Attention, marines. Be prepared for covenant boarding craft." Capt. Tyson said over the speakers. "Dave." He said to his AI construct. With that, a hologram of a Spartan in Mark VII armor appeared on the holotank. This AI was in the form of Spartan master chief Greg 035. "Yes?" He said. "Get the Spartans up. We might need them on this mission." "Right away, sir." "McDouglas, scratch that. We don't need to get out of here. We've got the Spartans." "Deleting command." McDouglas said.
Greg awoke, feeling dizzy. He tried to swallow, but instead gagged. He threw up the fluid that he was given during cryosleep. His body always rejected the chemical. He looked around. The others were wearing jumpsuits color-coded according to their rank. They were also looking sick. But the fluid got him awake. He ordered the Spartans to get showered and their armor on. He did the same. After that, they left the SPARTAN 3 living quarters and towards an airlock. 3 marines greeted them. "I am Corporal Garrett of the marine corps. SIR! It's good to see you here, Spartans. Our sarge was killed by enemy fire." The leader said. "Enemy fire?" Greg asked. "Does that mean---?" "Yes sir. The covenant are already boarding. And they are already opening their attack on planet Earth. We have to stop them before it's too late!" "We're on it." Said Greg. "Who are your fellow marines?" "I am Private Goodman, SIR!" One said. "And I am Private Benson, SIR!" The other said. "It is an honor to--" Pvt. Benson was cut short when a large explosion rocked the ship. Seconds later, the airlock tore open and 12 grunts immediately attacked. These stocky aliens were the most common foot soldiers in the covenant military. They were fierce at first, but if their leadership was wiped out or there were only a few of them left, they would "Run with thing on back". They carried plasma pistols, plasma rifles, needlers, and sometimes fuel rod guns. They also operated stationary plasma cannons but lacked the knowledge to control a vehicle. They stood 3 feet tall and were remarkably ugly. An orange-armored grunt hurled itself onto Pvt. Goodman clung onto his head. "Get it off me! Oh god oh god someone get it off me!!! Oh god oh god!!!" He screamed. "It's gonna blow me to bits! I'm only 24! I'm too young to die!" The grunt took out a plasma grenade and got ready to arm it. "That's it, you little booger!" Greg screamed. He picked up a shotgun from a gun rack and whacked the grunt. The grunt fell off and started screaming for mercy. "Please! Please!" He screamed. "I've got grunty commands straight from starship! I can't fail them! The commanders know all! If I fail, it means... loss of honor!" "The commanders?" Goodman asked, straightening himself up. "Uhh... I've gotta go now!" The grunt said, and bounded toward the hallway. "Hold it!" Greg screamed, and fired 3 battle rifle shots into the grunt's leg. "You're not going anywhere! Tell us more about these... commanders." "All right! All right!" The grunt screamed. "The ship, the Beacon of Magic and Power. It's the real source of the covenant. The home world was only a distraction! Admiral Fkagbe was only there on a vacation when you captured him! He loves the cold, you kno--" The grunt was cut short. "SHUT UP! I don't want to hear about the admiral! I was there, okay? So quit smart-talkin' and tell me more about this ship." "Fine. It's current position is in orbit around you're home world... Earth. I'll give you exact coordinates to the ship." "They better be right. Hmm... let's see... looks accurate... I'll make sure... All right. The ship's radar system shows that there's a large covenant ship in that area. And just to make sure, you're coming with us." "Uh... I can't do that..." "Why not?!" Screamed Garrett. "Well, because... It's a long story, ok?" "Just come with us." Greg said. "I'm tired of arguing with you. He tapped the lift controls and opened the ship schematics. He uploaded the diagrams into his suit and checked all levels. He found one that had a longsword docked in it. He tapped a control and the lift spun down. He looked around. There were 10 Spartans, 3 marines, and 1 grunt. Hopefully all he'd need to combat the entire covenant. He thought back to 2595 when he and 40 of his Spartans went and battled the insane forerunner emperor on Halo installation 01. A tangled and twisted emperor who had created super-clones of the covenant that were 10 times as powerful as normal covenant. There was a fierce battle. By the time the Spartans reached Halo 01, 33 were left. They entered the control temple to find the biggest mass of covenant clones, sentinels, and flood ever put together. Three thousand. The slaughter that followed was probably a miracle; the Spartans had overcome the deadly onslaught that had wiped out æ of the team. The Spartans must have truly been war gods. After the gigantic clash, they found the emperor. He was a frail old man; 2 mechanical hands, a mechanical leg, several pieces of his skull as well as the rest of his body replaced by metal plates, and mechanical lungs. He was also mad and greedy. Instead of interrogating him, they shut down all mechanical parts of his body. Thus destroying him. Only 10 Spartans had survived, however. These Spartans were the ones that Greg had named Blue Squadron. Now these soldiers had another battle of truth to fight. This one was almost as bad as the last. The Spartans had forgotten to self-destruct the halos after destroying the forerunner emperor. And now the covenant rebels were hunting for Halo 01. He remembered John 117's last words: Death to the Covenant at all costs. The words had seemed like a spell: The Spartans seemed to be fighting harder. The Covenant seemed to die off faster. Greg was shaken out of thought when the lift came to a stop. He exited the lift to find 4 technicians cowardly hiding behind a barricade. "Don't be a wimp! Get out of there!" Greg screamed. "It's the master chief!" One said. "We're saved!!" Said another. "Just shut up." Greg said. "We're gonna get off this hunk-o'-junk. Abe is breaking apart like a crushing dirt clod. There's a longsword docked here, right?" "Yes, sir." The leader said. "In hangar 3." "Ok. Let's go." 8 grunts and 3 jackals awaited them. One jackal cackled in it's menacing raspy voice. He had no shield and 2 plasma pistols. One in each hand. The chief armed a plasma grenade and dove behind the barricade. He crawled out to find only 5 grunts and 6 charred alien corpses where the other hostiles used to be standing. He then followed with a hail of fire with his battle rifle and gave the all clear signal to his troops. They moved into the airlock for the longsword. Hmmm... Greg thought. Let's leave these covies a nasty surprise. He planted a detonator on the airlock. At the same time, 5 elites and 15 grunts appeared in the hall. He and his comrades entered the ship and blasted off towards the covenant command ship. He looked back to see the airlock exploding and grunts and elites getting sucked out. "It's payback time!" Greg said. "My grunty buddies!" The grunt shrieked. "Just shut up and let's get out of here." Greg shot back. "Garrett, get us out of here!" "That's an affirmative." Said corporal Garrett. "Let's go." Said Pvt. Benson. Next chapter: Chapter 2: What We Do to Liars Don't miss it!!!!

Halo: The Legacy of the Spartan IIIs
By Kyle Gallagher
0943 hours, UNSC Longsword interceptor B0345671001 en route to sector Gamma 0B9 Omega
"Let's go." Pvt. Benson said.
"Okay! Let's see… The coordinate data seems accurate. Checking radar… scans show 3 inbound Covenant starfighters right… there." Greg pointed to a spot on his radar. He suddenly looked up from the radar screen to see that 3 Covenant starfighters,
code-named "Seraphs" by the UNSC, were opening fire on the longsword. "Benson, arm a missile. Take down one of those fighters."
"Uh, sir? I'm afraid that's a negative." Benson said.
"Why is that?" Greg asked.
"Because the missile launch system is damaged. Most likely back in the dock when an internal blast went off."
"Well, spray them with the gatling cannon pods."
"Yes, sir."
He flipped a switch and moved his joystick around. He fired at a fighter and saw several shots bounce off, but a few lodged in the fighter. Flames shot from it. The craft exploded, it's rear hatch opened, and a charred elite corpse with a blue cloud around it; it's blood.
"Benson, prepare a SAC 2 cannon round for those freaks."
"Aye, sir."
The SAC cannons (Small accelerator cannons) were small cannons that fired heavy rounds at a velocity usually of 50,000 MPH. They were mostly used on fighters, dropships, and as point-defense cannons for UNSC starships. Although not nearly a hundredth as powerful as the main MAC cannons used as the main weapon on starships, it could still easily reduce a troopship, boarding craft, squadron of fighters, or a full wing of banshees(The UNSC code name for covenant aircraft) to flaming scrap metal. Anyway, back to the action.
Benson charged the SAC cannon up to 120%. They would need the extra boost because the quick maneuvers of covenant fighters were so unpredictable. He aimed for a ship, and then fired. The craft shook and a split second later, a brilliant explosion engulfed the fighters in flames. The smoke cleared, and only small bits of charred black metal were left of them.
All of the passengers and crew cheered.
"That was a nice one, Private!" A technician said.
"Wait, look! More fighters!" Said Corporal Garrett.
"Missile system back online." Pvt. Benson reported. "Time to whoop some serious covenant tail."
8 fighters appeared on the window. On Benson's
viewscreen, 8 red dots appeared on the fighters.
"Goodman, buy us some time. Hold those crapheads off with the gatling guns." Corporal Garrett said.
"Got it." Said Pvt. Goodman.
Shots bounced off the covenant craft. Some ships engulfed in flames. They realized what was happening and attacked. The longsword shook with every shot. Greg looked out the window. He saw the wing being torn apart by plasma shots. He knew he had a mission. He knew he wouldn't fail for the UNSC… for Earth.
"Chief, we'll make it, right?" Said Karen, the sniper of Greg's red squadron.
"We've got to." Greg replied. "If we don't, then these covenant rebels will succeed in destroying Earth. Then mankind will be exterminated."
"Got it!" Pvt. Benson said. "I've got a lock. Here's a gift, you covie pissbrains, from me and all the boys back here, to you!"
He pulled the trigger on the joystick, flipped the control switch back to pilot mode, and made a quick jump away from the covenant fighters. He continued his journey towards the covenant command ship.
"That's funny." Benson said. "The coordinates are right, but… no command ship. Wait. There's something… No wait. It's just the remains of a covenant cruiser. He scanned it, and a hologram of it showed up on the holotank. A black, gnarled, burnt remain of a cruiser showed up, covered with holes, rips, and dents.
"This definitely isn't the command ship. With the information I got from this chip in the grunt's suit, the ship looks more like this:"
He inserted the chip into the holotank, scanned for the information, and finally found the command ship. It was the largest ship he had ever seen, and the shape was much different than that of the charred cruiser they found here.
"Do you know what that means, grunt?" Greg growled.
"Ummm… I gave you the wrong information?" The grunt asked nervously.
"No, you LIED!!!" Greg screamed. "And do you know what we do to liars?"
"Umm… I dunno." The grunt said.
"You'll find out." Greg cackled. "Benson, bring us closer to that cruiser."
"Aye, sir." Said Pvt. Benson.
The craft drifted through the twisted ship, and finally docked in a blackened cargo hold.
"What are we doing here?" The grunt said.
"Welcome to prison." Greg said smugly.
"WHAT? You don't understand!! I'm too young to die!! I can't stay here all alone!! I'll suffocate--"
"Shut up, grunt." Said Pvt. Goodman. "This place still has atmosphere. You'll live." "B-B-But--" The grunt stammered. "So long, grunt!" The humans said in unison as they boarded the longsword and revved up the engine. They charged the engine to 110% throttle and sped away. "No-ho-ho-ho-ho!!" The grunt cried. "Now I will never get home!! WAHAAHAHAHHH!!! I WANNA GO HOME!!! WHAT DID SERGEANT GAROLUS DO TO DESERVE THIS??"
"Well, have you found the exact location to the command ship?" Corporal Garrett asked.
"Not yet." Greg said. "I've found everything: Weapons information, shield charges, crew and passengers… except for the location. The covie battle net is a tangle of information. I recall that a system called the internet was used on Earth. It was a mess of billions of websites. The internet was a hard place to find the stuff you were looking for. Even with search engines. Until AIs came along, it was extremely hard to navigate. Man, if only I had an AI right now… THAT'S IT!!!"
"What?" Said a technician.
"The new AI transfer network device!" Greg exclaimed. "It can be used to transfer AIs like Dave 2.0!!!"
"You mean Abe's AI?" Said Pvt. Benson.
"Yeah! It has tons of information, extended memory banks, special calculators, and quick searching!"
"Well, you've got me convinced." Said Karen.
"Good. I just hope that Abe survived that assault. I'm bringing a COM channel online. Captain Tyson? Captain Tyson, come in."
"Go ahead." Capt. Tyson's voice said over the speaker.
"Cap'n!!" Greg said. "Listen, we need to ask you a favor."
"What?" Capt. Tyson asked.
"We need Greg."
"Dave? Yeah, sure. Thank god for that AI transfer device. Hang on a sec… There. I just transferred Greg into your ship's memory banks."
"Thanks. I owe you one." Greg closed the channel.
"Hey, Greg." Dave said. "You needed me?"
"Yeah. I need you to search the covenant battle net to find the location of a covenant ship… The Beacon of Magic and Power. A grunt told me about this place. He gave me coordinates, but they just led to the remains of a cruiser. I left him there to starve and catch the disease in there that will make you cough up blood and turn you into powder--well, I better not get into the details. Anyway, I need you to find the real location of it. Could you help me out?"
"Yeah, sure… one moment…hmmm…Admiral Haquizius is the captain…950 point-defense cannons…95036 crew…A-ha! Here. This area right here."
"Okay. Let's move out." Said Luke, the heavy weapons sergeant of Red squadron. "I wanna nuke their heads off."
"Initiating turbo boosters. Engines at 90 percent charge. Ready to go, Greg?" Dave asked.
"Go."
"We seem to be on track… velocity 700 miles per second. We're getting close… you should be able to see it now."
"Look, there it is!" Greg exclaimed.
"How do we know that this command ship thing isn't just a bunch of garbage?" Karen asked.
"We'll have to find out." Greg said quietly. "Dave, get ready to dock in that hangar bay."
