Chapter 1: As the Story Begins
Lieutenant Harvard stood at his desk, Earth was to be attacked soon, and he needed to collect 'willing' recruits to defend the last planet Humans actually could say they owned. Lists of potential civilians from City Iris scattered the wall, floor and tabletop.
These men and women would be training for a couple of weeks before they were drafted into the war effort. There were apparently 3000 names on the lists from what had been said. But a lot less could actually be trained in that time, he was told to gather about 500.
He decided to look through the names backwards, just to spice things up; it was a way to make things fun, if it could be fun to send people to their certain deaths.
Gary stood at the window, something was going to happen, and he knew it. The days were always dull when most of mankind had been annihilated by a recently discovered alien force. The skies were an unnatural grey; some people would think that it was a bad omen, bad things to come and all that crap. But he didn't think like that. Iris had always been quite an exciting place, positioned right near New Mombassa; it felt like nothing could go wrong here.
As his eyes passed across the street opposite he noticed something, it looked like someone was fighting inside number forty nine. As his eyes focused he noticed distinct figures behind the tinted glass, a man was grabbing a woman and trying to hit her in the stomach.
'JESUS' he thought.
He should do something, but it wasn't his business, but damn it, he knew that woman, when he was a child she used to come round to see his mother, before she joined the Marines. He then saw another figure; it looked like he had some kind of helmet on, but even more shocking was he was holding a gun. He was pointing it at the woman but she still did not stop struggling, if she did not stop being foolish she was going to get shot. Now he had to do something, in his father's room there was a gun, it was a some kind of magnum; UNSC class. His father used to be an ODST before he lost both his legs in a faulty drop.
He rushed up the stairs into his Fathers bedroom and opened the creaky floorboard. 'What an inconvenient place to put something' he thought.
He grabbed it and slammed the clip into it as he ran downstairs. He glanced back out of the window into number forty nine
Nothing, damn! He opened the front door, slipped the gun in to his pocket and walked casually across the street.
As Kano 'Ragasee walked across the hallway he wondered why his Confidante had called upon him. Had he displeased someone important, Isla 'Ouyamee maybe? If he had not slain the human whelp Isla would surely be dead, the greedy imbecile, and to think that he expected appraisal.
He arrived at the doors of Tehi 'Nakammee's office, he stood a few meters feet away to stop the door from opening. He shifted his weight from one foot to the other, and back again. Taking a breath he walked towards the door, they opened revealing a concerned looking Tehi, as Kano walked through the opening he noticed another figure in the corner of the room.
The figure was of a prophet, a lesser one at that, but still outranking him by insane proportions. He kneeled down almost instinctively, his head bowed in respect.
The prophet walked towards him.
'Rise warrior' he said in a manner which supposed that what was about to happen was not something he would particularly want to be involved in.
'Holy One' he said 'I have been called away from my studies on such short notice, what is it that could be so urgent
'
Tehi spoke before the prophet 'Kano 'Ragasee, you have been loyal for quite a time now, and your skills as a leader, warrior and friend have not been unnoticed. By recommendation of Isla 'Ouyamee and the agreement of the council you have been promoted to Field Commander, a noble rank dare I say?'
The Prophet spoke. 'Yes, but your, how do I say this, your brutality in battle is not a very appeasing prospect in the Field Commander status. It is apparent that your skills may be appreciated in a more suitable' he looked at Isla 'position, such as special operations.'
'Holy one, whatever you ask of me you know will be fulfilled, why do you play these games with me?' answered Kano.
The prophet continued. 'You have been called on to a mission of high priority and danger, come, I will tell you more
