the Gharial Fire: part one
Date: 7 October 2005, 11:25 pm
As Corporal Daggerson slowly walked onto the command deck, he briefly looked out of the window to the planet of Reach. This planet was the center of the human fleet for now, being a prime target for the Covenant assault. The fleet surrounding Reach was large enough to destroy it. The Corporal had often wondered why the Covenant were attacking humans, until he was told 'we got in their way'. The ship he was on, the Gharial Fire, was a medium sized destroyer. It had a MAC gun and 35 serviceable archer missile pods. It had been commissioned to be a search and destroy/rescue ship but was being used now as a command ship for Reach's defense. The ships bridge was bustling with activity, Daggerson looked through the large window on the bridge and saw the fleet from their perch on the huge refueling station. As the corporal looked around, he saw the captain of the Gharial Fire yelling at his tactical officer, " Only 35 missile pods! I wanted at least 50 before we left, at least get the MAC gun charged to 100%." Daggerson cleared his throat and the captain spun around. "ahh, corporal Daggerson" the captain said, shaking his hand," glad you could make it"
"Captain Anderson," Daggerson said, " I see you haven't lost your touch" the captain laughed and hit the panel behind him when it started bleeping. "yeah, I try." The tactical officer the captain had been yelling at turned around in his chair and said, " captain, we have multiple Covenant ships heading right for us, 200 plus."
"Damn."
The elites lurched as their medium sized transport jumped out of hyperspace. The small ship was waiting inside a larger one, the Fire and Fatigue. They clambered out of the carrying ship and started running around the holding bay. The shiny, gold elite that had got out the front of the ship walked calmly over to one of the control panels and looked at the view of the humans pathetic fleet. A slow, calm relief rushed over him. "sir," one of the blue elites standing next to him said, " I thought there was supposed to be at least 500 ships in their fleet. Where are they all?" "I don't know," the gold elite crackled, " but this should be just as fun." He slowly walked to the bridge, which was not that far incase the ship was boarded the elites could rush to the defense of the Prophet.
As the elite came around the corner a grunt ran into him. He picked the grunt up with one hand and growled at it. The grunt squeaked with fear until it regained its composure. The grunt looked at him and said , "put me down and you wont get hurt". The elite started laughing until the grunt pressed the points of a needler against the small patch of exposed skin on his chin. "Drop me," the grunt said again. This time the elite happily obliged. The grunt simply just walked around the corner and out of sight.
The elite eventually got to the bridge and stood at attention before the Prophet of Glory. "Ahh, commander," the Prophet said, " I trust the trip went well for you and your squad?" " Yes o' glorious prophet," the elite replied. "very well," the prophet said, "prepare your squad for boarding, you will be assaulting their command ship," the Prophet paused, looked down at his chair and said, " the Gharial Fire." "yes o' Glorious one."
As the warning came out that the covenant had arrived, the fleet became suddenly active. All ships launched off of the refueling station and slowly drifted into position around the planet. 'most of these ships aren't built for combat,' Daggerson thought to himself,' but they might be able to help.' Slowly looking around he noticed one marine looking out of a side port. Walking over to him, Daggerson said , "what's wrong?" "I've.. I've never actually been in a fight, sir," the marine replied. 'Damn,' the corporal thought, 'these people will lose it in a real fight.' Suddenly realizing that there was little hope for the human fleet made him begin to worry, but he quickly concealed it. Walking back up to the main command screen, he noticed that most of the covenant ships were staying just beyond the range of the MAC guns. However, some of them were slowly advancing. He heard the order for the MAC gun to be charged, then he heard "Boarding Party, heading right for us!"
