"All of the Other Spartans." Part I- Only Time Will Tell
Planet Virtue/Just Outside of the Epsilon Eridani System/0937 Military Calendar April 17th, 2552
"Go now Spartans! I can see about 10 Covenant drop ships inbounds!"
Dominick, Spartan number 713, looked up into the sky. The planet seemed to call to mind the image of Earth to Dominick, but he knew he couldn't get distracted. He had to get out of the area and find a place for evac, and fast.
As Dominick rushed along the landscape with his team, he examined the area around him. Most of the land was a soggy quagmire, with the sky above glowing a lush bluish-green. And from what Dominick could feel, the climate was moist and warm, and almost seemed to quiver as if it were alive.
But as Dominick switched his focus to the sky, he saw a scene that made his heart drop. Hovering above him were 10, maybe even 11 Covenant drop ships. As he saw Lt. Mark's Pelican fly away from the LZ and disappear out of the sky, he thought to himself: Just as Lieutenant Marks predicted! About ten of those drop ships!
Dominick paused and calculated the numbers. 10 Covenant drop ships, about 20 ground forces per ship, easy math. 200 units, but those were not exactly the best numbers to hear with a team of only 5 Spartans and 15 marines.
Dominick turned to his team and told them to halt. As all 14 people stopped in their tracks, Dominick announced to everyone what he got out of solving the math given.
"Spartans, get yourselves armed, my calculations show that about 200 Covenant ground forces are set on intercepting our mission area. Estimated time of enemy contact is 0943 hours."
"Damn it," A marine murmured. "we're gonna get fried."
"Hey marine
don't be yappin' about gettin' burned by those Covenant slime, you got Spartans on your side!"
Spartan number 612, Zeke, set a hand on the rowdy marine's shoulder. Zeke was African American, and had a buzz-shaven head. Whenever not dressed in full battle armor, Zeke would always be found in pitch dark sunglasses, and would be chewing hard on a cinder of a cigar.
Of course, he couldn't have a cig right now, so he settled for some chewing tobacco and chomped loudly on it as the platoon of soldiers marched through the swamp-lands of Planet Virtue.
0940 hours. Three minutes left.
"When are things gonna starting heating up? Man, I'm getting bored here."
That was Spartan number 764, Nikki. She had traces of blond hair that still remained on her standard UNSC 3-centimeter-long hair, and deep green eyes that garnished her beautiful face with a tint of majesty. In his first 10 years in Spartan training on Reach, Dominick almost felt as if he was in love with her. He liked her personality. She was always joking around, even in the UNSC.
0942 hours. Only a minute more.
"Don't worry Nikki. I think we'll be getting some company pretty soon," Dominick stated. "'cause I think they're coming down."
Every unit in the 15-man platoon stared at the scene. All 10 drop ships settled themselves down onto the marshy ground. The hatches on the side of the drop ships opened and hordes of Covenant troops stepped gently into the murk.
Several of the marines began to quiver in their fear of the alien behemoths, and all six Spartans, including Spartan numbers 644, 732, and 597 (Patrick, Melissa, and Rob) tensed up and held their M3 Battle Rifles. This was it. The Covenant were coming.
Dominick could almost make out the exact numbers of Covenant present in the zone. Only about 100 yards away, Dominick could count the units on the opposing side of the marsh. After about 5 seconds Dominick only counted about one third of the amount of units about to come at him head on. He got 134. The army was bigger than he imagined. Not 200 ground forces; this was going to be about 350.
A plasma bolt went whizzing by Dominick's head. His motion tracker flared with the red circles that symbolized Covenant.
A Grunt squealed and thousands more plasma bolts went whizzing past. The battle had begun. The marines ran head on into the horde of Covenant, and as 4 Elites fell, 7 marines were dragged down with them. Dominick pulled the trigger on his M3 BR and released a three shot-burst of bullets. 2 Grunts fell over and leaked small puddles of blue-metallic blood. The work of the Spartans had taken down about 20 to 30 Covenant, and the remaining marines had taken down about 6 enemy units.
Dominick felt a burn in his ribs. He had gotten shot with a plasma rifle. As his MJOLNIR Mark VI armor's high tech shields were recharging form that hit, Dominick felt another burn in his left knee-cap. He involuntarily fell to the ground, and lay on the ground until his shields recharged. He felt his automatic BioFoam dispenser turn on, and he felt the awkward, cold wisp of medication dissolve into his burns. He felt a small bit rejuvenated and forced himself to get off of the ground. He heard Zeke yelling happily in the background of the fight.
"Oh damn, all of this blood is staining my new armor! Stupid Covenant bastards can't even die without bein' pests!"
Zeke kicked a dead Covenant Elite in the head and ran off, releasing bursts of BR ammo into bone and flesh of the Covenant forces. Dominick evaded the battle and crouched behind a large rock that protruded out of the quagmire. He clicked on his COM channel.
"This is Spartan Seven-One-Three, can anyone hear me?"
He waited for a reply. After a short pause the COM channel clicked on.
"What seems to be the problem here, Seven-One-Three?"
Dominick peered around the side of the large stone and observed the battle. Only about 150 units left. All of the Spartans were alive, but all of the marines were dead.
"We're taking heavy casualties, any chance we could get some reinforcements down here? It's getting pretty hot."
"Sure thing Seven-One-Three, I've tracked your signal, reinforcements are heading your way."
Dominick clicked off the COM channel, peered around the side at the battle again, turned back around, and waited.
Dominick didn't know where this battle was headed, and he didn't even know if he was going to leave it alive. He sat silently against the rock and leaned his head back gently as he waited for reinforcements to arrive on the scene. Dominick arrived at one direct answer for all of his questions. Only time will tell.
